This is Bette Davis' best work and she was NEVER more beautiful as far as I'm concerned. I can hardly take my eyes off of her during this whole film. George Sanders always seemed to play the cad, but he was oh so good at it. He was never the best looking man in the room, but he was most certainly the most suave which made him quite appealing.
...of course Mr. Hannay might well respond to Jennifer that Anne Baxter spelled her name with a final "e," and was Frank Lloyd Wright's granddaughter, not daughter. So much for homework. Aside from that, this is an incredible picture with flawless acting and superb dialogue. Utterly magnificent.
So great. So true. You can just imagine this has occurred many a time in Hollywood....and elsewhere. Marilyn is hilarious and like everyone else ...is fantastic,
You guys gotta check out this movie on netflix. It's fucking funny, with quick and witty dialogue. Bette Davis is FABULOUS in this film. I became a huge fan after "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane". All About Eve might be a better film....and this clip doesn't do any justice. It's like this clip is completely out of context and no one will get it. Honestly, check out the whole film because it's fantastic. Very smart and glamorous at the same time.
I agree with you Pharaoho. Bette was the greatest actress of Old Hollywood. Don't forget that George Sanders played the voice of Shere Khan in the Jungle Book, (1967). Very distinctive voice.
Mr. Hannay..there was no Gloria...her character name was Norma Desmond, and to The Pharacho, Celeste's last name was Holm not Holms...learn to do your homework before you go public. Ann Baxter was American royalty...in real life, she was the daughter of legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Actors are not any better or worse today. The writing is not as good as in the past. Watch Elizabeth Taylor in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" to see great writing and great film acting. WOW !
Celeste Holms and George Sanders are amazing. No need to mention Bette; she's probably the greatest film actress of all times. I am a bit confused though, Ann Baxter is suppose to be Eve and she won an academy award right? It's funny because up until now I actually forgot she was even in this film and it's named after her character. I guess because she pretty much gets drown out by everyone in the picture; for instance, in this scene, Bette and Marilyn outshine her completely.
What a shallow person! Now that I am older and wiser. I see that Bette Davis was an obsessed BITCH! I take her daughter's side! I don't think she knew what a charity was or an underdog. She had it easy! That is the irony of her BULLSHIT saying, "I did it the hard way!" Fuck You Bette! YOU FOOL! You were WEAK! You don't fool me!
"Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night" is the line of all lines in American cinema, delivered by the most iconic actress the world will EVER know. Everyone is great and say what you what about anyone, she is the archetype of an actor displaying all the necessary requirements. It's a sin she didn't win the Oscar for best actress that year, although she was nominated, but she was punished by The Academy. She even coined the term "Oscar" for God's sake. Thelma Ritter is amazing.
For the untrined movie goer som of us appreciate the uncanny. Movies now days rely on special effects. Just cause there are no monnsters blood shed and special effects, the actress in this movie- Bette Davis- is one of sensual appeal with class style and poise. I am sorry that witherspoon, and the mondern actresses do not asspire to this
I don't get all the "actors back then are better than the actors today" talk... lol!... Sounds like what Gloria Desmond said about the actresses during the 1950s... "We didn't need dialogue. We had faces." :p At least Billy Wilder thought it was silly...
agreed!! the "old" movies and actor/actresses didn't need to rely on special effects. they made it all happen with superb line delivery, facial expressions and real emotion. In some of Alfred Hitchcock's films one never had to see a spot of blood to be terrified. Bette, Joan and all the others had immense talent. Most films made today are completely pathetic.
Bette Davis was the most fabulous actress. Why aren't the best actresses alive in my lifetime!? I have to put up with Paris Hilton and Katie Price. Give me a real a celbrity with talent like Bette Davis or Katharine Hepburn. They are no longer part of this world but they never will be forgotten. I'm only 20 but even I know the best celebrities are not of this world anymore. All we have left of that time is the fantastic Christopher Lee and he won't be around for much longer. R.I.P Hollywood
95 % of movies today are geared towards 14-17 year old boys, so, horror, action-adventure, and sci-fi movies dominate the industry. The other 5 % of the product is produced to perpetuate the art form and win awards. Movies like "All about eve" are assumed to be box office poison nowadays, so, they wont be produced. Fortunately, we have Turner classic movies to show us how films used to be made and used to be GOOD !! Bette is my favorite !! Keep her memory alive, kids :)
@ToddBrent19 But you have to take into consideration, in a time when not many people own television and the internet and home videos did not exist, where do you think adults go for entertainment?... Movies would be high atop the list... Let's face it, the most productive way for movies to survive is to cater to the younger crowds who go to watch movies in groups and droves (to hang out with friends)... Many busy adults would rather just pop in a DVD after work rather than suffer a theatre lineup
The party is scene and the scene at the theatre that follows are easily the best of the film. George Sanders and Bette Davis play off each other perfectly. The crack about being a marvelous Peter Pan, and Davis' "This is an old friend of Mr DeWitt's mother" Throw in Baxter and Monroe who is impossibly incandescent and you can see why this is one of the best movies ever made.
@solcab75 Just a little further into the film Monroe calls, "Oh, waiter!" DeWitt: "That's not a waiter, my dear, that's a butler." Marilyn: "Well I can't yell 'oh butler' can I? [wide-eyed] Maybe somebody's name is Butler - !"
One of my favourite films ever. It really doesn't feel dated at all. And it's not just Bette Davis' parts, the entire script is brilliant. Great cameo from Marylin Monroe!
I had the privilege of meeting George Sanders in the mid 1960s. He was just as suave and polished in real life, only much less sarcastic.
What can one say about Bette Davis? I think she must have been the greatest screen actress ever. This film has a superb female cast (Thelma Ritter as well as Celeste Holm, Anne Baxter and, of course, Marilyn). But Bette outshines them all.
There's only one film I like more and it was made less than a year earlier: The Third Man.
I know this is Bette's picture, but I'd just like to point out that smile of Marilyn's. Quite frankly, there is no wonder as to the limits of her charm, if that was any proof at all.
and you gotta love how they play "Thou Swell, Thou Witty" in the background throughout. Rodgers & Hart would've been right at home at this bitch-fest.

Margo Channing is one of the greatest female roles of all time. Bette Davis is extraordinary in this film and I also love Thelma Ritter, what a great character actress.

But right after Nixon let everyone down I noticed attitudes taking a darker turn and they've steadily become more caustic and callous. People said the same thing in Roman times believe it or not. Keep on posting
Celeste Holm's re-action to Bette's downing of her first (of many!) martinis at 0:12-0:16 is wonderful--and so very telling!
Margo: I distinctly remember, Addison, crossing you off my guest list--what are you doing here?
Addison: Dear Margo, you were an unforgetable Peter Pan; you must play it again soon.
Amazing how, with George Sanders, Anne Baxter and Marilyn Monroe all on the screen at the same time, Bette Davis still shines through, despite all that competition!
I love how Birdie comes all the way down the stairs, then immediately has to take Margo's coat all the way back up - you can sense the contempt there without a word spoken between them!
Great classic lines:
"Dear Margo, you were an unforgettable Peter Pan - you must play it again soon."
"Why do they always look like unhappy rabbits?"
And of course: "Fasten your seatbelts - it's going to be a bumpy night."
Oops. Didn't realize someone already commented on that line. Oh well, it was worth repeating. Don't you just love the classics, and their witty scripts?
I say the same thing when I watch these oldies...I have a Rita Hayworth book and she is in a gorgeous gown and she's smoking and she looks wonderful...a woman today with a gown like she was wearing would look awful I think...it would detract in other words but with Rita it didn't AT ALL!
Classic! This is such a great film. It's also wonderful seeing Marilyn Monroe here before she hit it big. "Why do they always look like unhappy rabbits?"
It's not so much the classic line itself as it is Davis' delivery that awes me. Love how she drags out answering Karen's question, finishing her drink, sweeping over to the staircase, turning to regard her audience & then saying it! Great actress, Great movie.
@Shakeshack78 ~ Of course, it might have something to do with Mankiewicz' direction. That is, if this was that rare occasion when Davis took direction.

How about Marilynn's comment: "You won't bore him honey. You won't even get a chance to talk" lol

Oops. Didn't realize someone already commented on that line. Oh well, it was worth repeating. Don't you just love the classics, and their witty scripts?

Such a shame that martinis and cigarettes are bad for your health, they are so glamorous.

I say the same thing when I watch these oldies...I have a Rita Hayworth book and she is in a gorgeous gown and she's smoking and she looks wonderful...a woman today with a gown like she was wearing would look awful I think...it would detract in other words but with Rita it didn't AT ALL!

The film seems very foreign. I think that is why I appreciate it aesthetic so much.

The guy with Marylin (George Sanders?) is the Tiger in Disney's Jungle Book. He's brilliant too.

One of the greatest scenes in a film EVER!!..at least I think so! What a film!!!!!!

@Shakeshack78 ~ Of course, it might have something to do with Mankiewicz' direction. That is, if this was that rare occasion when Davis took direction.
