I think the landlord started this fire. His name is Joshua Guttman. He tried to have the area rezoned, and was denied - mainly for being a slumlord on his other properties so publicly it was in the NYT. Shortly thereafter, the whole place burned down.

The place didn't burn out in a few hours. It's actually still standing, well ... what's left of it anyway. No casualties, no serious injuries and I think to this day, no one really knows how it started. There are rumors of course, but no concrete facts.
