  • what does "we lived through the silver and the bell" mean?

  • Seth's hat? Scott's hair?!? Hahaha omg it's ridiculous :D

  • this is awesome, these guys are sick, how can i see them this close?

  • and me thinking it was la la of da tellytubbies.. amazing act America wake up, poxy bieber is stifling real talent plus wanky record companies they make fell like I av won the lottery every time I listen to the brothers sing, great for the heart and soul. Crack on gent's your bieber is here today gone tomorrow this act is here forever in 50 years folk will say how the avett brothers changed many lives, well they changed mine.. thanx for the video your a star too..

  • I first heard this song on a tour of a school I really wanted to get into, and there was a guy there in the music room who played this for me

he had really beautiful eyes :)

  • @Rustyloveproductions It's Scott behind Seth.

  • as always, the tallest man in the crowd stands front and center.

  • I think it is supposed to be both funny and thoughtful. The things that they mention in the verses are funny, but I think that the last bit of the song is much more powerful when it contrasts with the light tone of the first part. The fact that you get to the end of the song and realize you have been laughing at things that really weren't funny makes for a sharper point than if the whole song was "drinking is bad."

  • Cheers!

  • First time listener and newest fan!

  • I was one of around 40 people at this show, so I'll try to give y'all some perspective. 1st, the girl laughing at the beginning was just someone that wasn't really listening to the music at all. Don't think that was directed at the song. The laughter in the middle was due to Scott "hiding" behind Seth and singing as high as he possibly could. Just a really laid back show & the guys were having a good time. No disrespect intended by the crowd or TAB. These were the good ol' days.

  • @NorthEndZone you dont have to splain bro... What I like about this is that everyone seems distracted and bs'n until about the time they get to the 3rd or 4th line in the song and then BAM, everyone is paying attention when they realize whats up...

  • When i drink i listen to the avett brothers

  • This is like fucked up. I would hate to be singing this song. I mean if they're joking, i feel like they woulda cracked a smile or something. They seem hella serious and the audience is taking it as a joke. I'm just confused. I don't wanna get bent out of shape if the song is a joke, but i feel like the laughing is fucked up.

  • @BrightLights916 That's why I'm confused about this too. Their stonefaces either way don't really communicate whether they are displeased with the laughing or if they got the reaction that is quite thought-provoking. It certainly gives you pause to think about. They didn't react negatively to the laughing, just rather like they didn't even notice.

  • @yoyosweetiepie Yeah totally. I mean people do funny things when they're drunk, I know i sure as hell have. But more than that being funny, is the sad reality of honesty and frankness felt when really drunk. But then again, lines like "fistfights with the air" really detract from any power in the lyrics. I find the harmony in the chorus touching, but i hate being sentimental when there is a light or humorous tone around. So confusing

  • why are all of these fuckers laughing.. it is a brutally honest song..

I feel so bad for them.. they're bearing their soul, and these vultures are LAUGHING.. : \

  • Hey idiots...it was not a woman @ 1:39...it was Scott. You an see him singing at the very end.

  • @TheBHartley Do you think he wanted to evoke the pathetic hilarity of a drunk or was he seriously singing? That's why I made my earlier comment. . . is a drunk person funny or just rather pathetic or both? Should we laugh or not? I wonder if that's the artistic tone of this song. . . to evoke that thought about drunkeness?

  • I liked 1:39. It sounded kind of good... :P

  • What gets me about the comment about the ad lib at 1:39 is that the audience's response (as well as some here posting) is much like people laughing at a drunk person/friend.

  • The people who dislike this have no soul.

  • fuck ya the avetts are badasses

  • When I drink I say things I don't want to say I do things I don't wanna do I talk mean to you But if I think I just might get something out of this My parents taught me to learn when I miss Just do your best Just do your best It's the only way to keep that last bit of sanity
  • @kibuso what in the hell!?

  • I know, cause I drink

  • i dont really like how people are laughing about some of the lyrics in this performance. they're not supposed to be comical in this song, its more melancholy than that. boo

  • Ugh, you must not be a real fan.

  • how old is this?

  • @Vearlsriver smokin hot civil dudes

  • @eirotify

    AGREED!

  • Damn it boys...play it!

  • Great song and I recommend everyone give a thumbs up for the woman joining comment lol

  • that woman joining in at 1:39 fits so well into this song. bravo.

  • thats not a woman that was scott right behind seth

  • that was scott, not a woman

  • @jimmihshs that's scott.

  • @jimmihshs that wasn't a woman, it was the banjo player haha. I've seen him do it in other videos of this song.

  • @jimmihshs im pretty sure thats scott behind seths back!

  • thats just scott behind seth....haha

  • @jimmihshs thats scott singing that....haha he was just jokingly hiding it

  • @jimmihshs isnt that scott? im confused if you know its him, or if im mistaken and it is someone in the audience. no i actually think its scott hahaha

  • @jimmihshs Actually, that's Scott chiming when he's ducking behind Seth.

  • @hallowdmachine good call!

  • i am amazed by these guys

  • its the hat, dude! hahah

  • I feel like Seth was watching a bit too much Myth Busters around this time in his life.

  • :D

What makes you say that? I'm only 40 seconds through the video and it looks like he could be watching mythbusters in the wings or something :D

  • In case you're still bothered by my comment (everybody) when I wrote that I thought that Scott was Seth and Seth was Scott, then a month or so after I finally learned that it's Scott on banjo and at first my world was turned upside down but then the band was just like new again because I knew who was who.

  • @thatccrdude

    with the hat? yes

  • I remember seeing this awesome concert. It was the first time i had ever seen them live. We came specifically for them. We wore our suits and our boots and stomped around with them out at Kentuck that muddy day. I even took a dump in the port-a-potty right next to Seth Avett before the show. I can't believe this was uploaded. Thank you!! I miss these small concerts they used to play. They play such huge places now.

  • So I was just watching this video.. and I was thinking "Oh wow, this looks like the stage at Kentuck" and then I looked to the side and read Northport, AL and realized that I missed this show.

I live like 20 minutes away from this place.

    I might just cry.

  • I live in the town where this festival takes place!!! AAHH can't believe I missed it.

  • holy hell...scott's hair is a hoot.

  • this song is amazing

  • avett brother rule, snowranf sucks

  • lets just all be nice!

  • lets just all be nice!

  • I am nice i was just drunk :-)

  • Sure, how appropriate. :)

  • "I talk mean to you"

  • this was my first avett show... great one

  • Harvey wanted me to tell you this is awesome and that he saw them the night before in Dickson County. Poor David Mead.

  • When I drink... I make an ass out of myself, but hey such is the cirlce of life. See you in Philly in a Few weeks Brothers, oh ya you too bobby C... how could i forget bout you... Keep rocking boys
