Who remembers The Beachburger? Gino's Pizza was / is the BEST. I grew up in Long Beach, went to Long Beach High. My family had the last surviving bath house there, The Surf Club, next to The Bowling Alley before it burnt down. Have been trying to track down some photos of it but haven't had any luck. If anyone knows of or has any photos please email me femail@atheana.com :-)
when it became multivision...an early video/recording studio, i recorded there.. shame.. it should have been kept as a theatre and restored! it was designed by the same architect who did carnegie hall! so much history was lost there
loved this vid!! we lived there for most of our childhood...70's was so much fun for me and my kid brother!! loved the laurel theatre!!! so many movies and fun times we spent there every weekend! hey,. no shots of the grand lido hotel?? there's a lot of history there too..but thanks for this.. loved the boardwalk arcade/amusement park rides... cried when they closed... also when the laurel theatre closed.. laurel luncheonette had the BEST breakfast and lunch specials! great days
long beach used to be a place of fun, since then it has gone wayyy downhill. i pay big bucks to live on the boardwalk with ocean views and am surrounded by real trash that dont pay a thing because some genius decided to flood E. Broadway with section 8 housing. besides that, there isnt 1 shop, arcade, game or ride anywhere near the boardwalk anymore. there are still some fun things about LB like the annual polar bear dive and that amazing summer crowd, but nothing like it used to be :(
@ronniemass At the same time, there was a time when people could not walk on the boardwalk after 9 pm without the worry of getting mugged and worse. Long Beach was dirty and decrepit in the 70's and 80's. Mentally disabled housing lined the boardwalk, fights all the time, etc, etc. Long Beach has come a Looooong way and is one of the hottest spots in New York. Dont get me wrong, I used to love the wild times when I was young and I cant stand the lack of parking from over crowding and tourist's.
I just watched the movie"City By The Sea" a story about Long Beach and it struck me how ocean real estate was allowed to fall in such disrepair as shown in the film, I imagine the hurricane had something to do with the decline.
@neverknewtillnow FYI, "City by the Sea" was filmed in Asbury Park, New Jersey. The appearance of the real estate shown in the film does not match what Long Beach looks like today (and there is debate about whether it even looked like that at the time the film is said to take place).
@ 8:41.. I REMEMBER PIZZA AT GINO'S USED TO BE 70CENTS AND THE STORE NEXT TO IT WAS CALLED MISTER SPORTS.. THE ONLY SNEAKER STORE IN LONG BEACH,, THIS SLIDE IS GREAT.. BRINGS BACK MEMORIES.
8:10.. i REMEMBER THAT HURRICANE... I THINK THAT WAS HURRICANE GLORIA. I WAS LIKE 8 YRS OLD AND I LIVED ON BROADWAY AND IT FLOODED ALL THE WAY TO THE 1ST FLOOR.
Just so everyone knows...this isnt the original soundtrack that I made for this video. Youtube removed my audio (Frank Sinatra, The Wanderers and thr Beatles. If you would like an original copy let me know. Thanks...Rob R (Sonny Boy Pics)
Thank you for this wonderful reminder of how nice it is to live here. I grew up on the North Shore, which is beautiful also, but nothing compares to Long Beach. There are weekends where I don't use my car at all - everything is in walking distance.
Great slideshow - you should send it to Channel 12!
Thank you very much. Thats an idea (channel 12). I am actually working on a mini documentary of Long Beach. Probably going to take me a year to complete. Keep an eye out for it. Thank you once again.....
I have not commissioned the artist as of yet. If you could provide me with any of your past paintings that would be great. I am interested in having a 46x38 (approx.) collage of the boardwalk, the rides, etc. to be painted. I live in Zurich, Switzerland so I would have to have this sent here. Though I do go back 3 or 4 times a year to Island Park, so it would be possible we could meet and discuss this if you are in the area. Thanks, Judy
Thank you for editing such a great piece of the history of L.B. Memories are all of what I have left, and now I can view my growing up years on the boardwalk and the city and share it with my children. How fabulous. I am commissioning an artist to paint a realistic collage of the boardwalk back in the late 50's, is there a way to view some of the pics instead of looking at the video? Thank you again for bringing many smiles and wonderful memories!
Hello, thank you very much for the kind compliments. This is why I made this video, so everyone can take a journey back in time. Too bad you already hired an artist, I am an artist by trade as well and would have loved to do that mural for you. But I do have pictures that I can e-mail to you for the artist to refer to. Thanks once again. Robert
Having arrived in LB back in '58 I took great pleasure in watching your video. You've done a terrific job in recording some of the history and the many changes of our city.
It's been over 15 yrs since we left town. Your video reminds me that I still have LB sand in my shoes!
"Long Beach sand in my shoes", that was a good slogan wasnt it....Long Beach has and is going through a lot of changes. Glad you liked the vid, it was a pleasure putting together.
Thanks for the credit Bobby. I put a link to the video on a couple of our pages, including the "Special Collections" page. Might bring you some more traffic.
My Pleasure. I will get in touch with you when I am finished with my mini documentary. Also, I have a really nice video of the boardwalk accompanied by music. The one I have on here had to be sped up to under ten minutes, but the regular speed one is very nice. I could send it to you if you would like.
From out on the plains of Kansas please accept this heartfelt "thank you." My family passed this to me and as I watched it a small tear came to my eye thinking about all of the wonderful (and sometimes not so wonderful)Long Beach memories. Our town is so very unique and special. A melting pot of wonderful people within the melting pot of the greatest city in the world--New York. You have a talent to provoke sentiment. Nice job.
Thank you so much. This was made from my love for this town. It makes me smile and have warm hearted feelings to invoke the same feelings in others. Thank you once again...
Absolutely Mahvelous Dahling!!! Lol Billy you're fantastic. Great Video, Good choice of tunes at the right moments. Having lived and enjoyed as many have, this video can bring back memories for all. Hopefully they're all good.
