He does that because most people will defend an armbar by stacking you. If the person you're against is a lot larger, their stacking you makes it very hard to finish an armbar from the bottom. When you sweep them over, the bigger people have less ability to defend. In the spider web, grabbing the leg also takes away any chance of an opponent getting back up on their feet and stacking again. You have much more power to finish with something in that spider web position.
awesome... have been waiting to see a good slow video of the pump for awhile... thanks SUB101..... I imagine this is great for a guy who keeps his hands on your chest????
Curl your legs down, C-Cup the leg. Push down to the ground with your legs, swinging the outside leg (in this case the left) for momentum. Pull up with your hand on their leg.
I have been using the rubber guard with some success in any no-gi situation i find myself in. Alternating between it and closed and half-guard (as the situation dictates)has been a serious help to my no-gi game. Adding it to my gi game has been just as successful. Thanks 10th planet!
Great video but a word of caution, please avoid the cult of personality. That said though, I would like to say I agree with fighter1125, Eddie Bravo is admirable. Respect and peace. =D
We are controversial enough with our no-gi stance, our neck cranking new students, the noobs who pull rubber guard without bothering to learn open guard and posture/single collar/"double wrist" control, and the fact that BJJ doesn't have an universally founded nomenclature on sweeps and submissions.
It would be nice if a group of black belts came up with an agreed nomeclature of sweeps and submissions
great teacher! he seems to encourage his students and doesn't put them down. Bravo is a genius and a real master. Repetition is soo important! Great job by Bravo and so as Ari for teach his students about the importance of repetitions.
I Don't care what other people say about the 10th PJJ, it works for me. Eddie Bravo is the best!
The only issue I have is my flexibility, I just don't smoke enough weed to be that flexible. HA. Love the rubber guard and the unique use of control that Eddie uses.
What a cool guy. Instead of saying something like "gotta work on that flexibility, dude", he just says "that's fine!" and encourages him after he finished (something you won't get from a lot of instructors..let alone, masters). I hope he has a seminar near me sometime.

i dont understand why sweep? cant you just break his arm fromthere?
nubemuffin 3 years ago
From Spiderweb you have more options than just the armbar such as arm crushes, triangles, etc.
Also, if the armbar fails, you still get the points for the sweep and pass

How come when being stacked people don't ever just go out the back door with the arm-bar like Royce used to? (eg. vs. Kimo)
yungkurensi 3 years ago
yes, but its always better to be on top when doing an armbar. its easier to counter while throwing it from your back.

Eddie does seem like a great teacher, though it's a bit unfair that he has 4 arms and no legs... I wish I had flexibility and control like that.

how do you swip him ? i tried it in my class and i had trouble to swip him on his back
