@Doobiness he was badly burned in a fire when he was 18, fusing two of his fingers together. He spent over a year and a half in the hospital and had to teach himself to play guitar all over again. absolutely amazing talent - in my opinion the best guitarist to ever play - especially considering all he had to overcome.
I place Django as my favorite musician, others in my top ten would include, Segovia, Stochelo, Wes Montgomery, Tchan Tchou Vidal, Keith Richards, Carl Perkins, Eddie Lang, Charlie Christian and Muddy Waters.
As a guitarist I'm not listening to the guitar, my whole body just wants to absorb the whole vibe, makes me happy, I feel lucky to be able to enjoy this wonder.
Lord we critters are so focused on who's first, best,fastest ......this is not a big dick contest....sit back and enjoy the music and give in no small measure consideration to the efforts of those who put it up there for your enjoyment....FREE!!!! now...how often does that happen in the real world???????
@victordaniamandi That is a good question. My favourite guitarists are in no particular order: Jimi Hendrix; Wes Montgomery; Django Reinhardt; Paco de Lucia; Danny Gatton; Stochelo Rosenberg; Jeff Beck; Segovia; Chet Atkins and BB King just to name 10. There are many more. What about you, who do you like?
@jmsbk12345 I never heard about Rosenberg or Gatton(sorry) ,but i like J. Williams,Milos Karadaglic, Paco de Lucia,Brian May,Slash,Page,Dick Dale,Freddy King,Francis Goya(for melodicity),and the greatest (in my opinion ) is Segovia.And I don' t like Hendrix.Django is very good, but looks like he's playng the same song all the time.And I like Duane Almann too
@jmsbk12345 All very good players. Have you listened to Jack Pearson or Derek Trucks? If you like Gatton, you will like Redd Volkaert and Johnny Hiland, What about Tommy Emmanuel? we all have similar but different tastes in guitarists, but we as well as Chet and Les Paul agree on Segovia and Django.
@jmsbk12345 Easily top three. According to Rolling Stone magazine, he's not even in the top 100. I say Bullshit! I never get tired of hearing Django play.
Three amazing guitar innovators of all time (none of whom could read music) would be: Jimi Hendrix, Django Reinhardt and Wes Montgomery.

@playingwithfirehurts
It's a cigarette. Django didn't do drugs. Only cigarettes. They looked different in those days.

His playing is even more amazing when you consider he was missing fingers on his fret hand.

@jmsbk12345 ... He virtually re-invented the guitar with the sound he produced, never before had the guitar been played the way he had,
Well, maybe it had, but no one ever had heard it,
He put his stamp on this sound - a true innovator.
Django was ahead of his time.
