Check out my song - "If You Imagine" written in response to John's song. John said that his song was virtually the Communist Manifesto. I don't dig that at all. Please read the more info under the song pic. John 3:16
Oh, I wish Mike would've also sang Yesterday, Hey Jude, Michelle, And I Love Her, & This Boy...NOT! His voice doesn't work for these; however, Surfing USA, that's a 10+
Mike Love's voice is great for bass vocals in harmony arrangements, and for corny oldies... but Carl should have been singing this. I just hate Mike Love overall so i am biased.
Carl @ 2:27: Tell me he ISN'T thinking, "Christ, there's still another fucking verse!" LOL.
I like a lot of the vocals Mike has done over the years, same as I like the vocals from the other Beach Boys. The original blend was fantastic and remained so for some time, despite some tweaking. That said, "Imagine" sung my Mike doesn't work for me. He'd have done better to have performed, say, "Everyone's In Love With You" and simply dedicated it to the memory of John Lennon.
Mike Love sucks. He is and always was a nobody. He owes everything he ever got in his crap ass life to the Wilson brothers...Go back and watch the early videos, the man cant even sing.. I cant wait for him to die so I can go to his grave and spit/[piss all over it..
perhaps going too far as Mike also wrote some good tunes and his voice fitted well with the others, but it is true he was nothing without the others, and he on many occasion fked it up for them...
Yeah, the nasal twang sounds awful as everybody has said, the way he bends the words during the chorus ("Imagine all THE PEEEEOPLE") is an interesting tweak that I really enjoyed (Carl could have done it way better though).
Anyways, Mike had a point: he spent some time with John and during that summer retreat he might have developed a bond with him, and to be honest, humidly admitting and honoring the talent of another performer is something Mike EGO love rarely did, so kudos to him for this
@begbieboy Are you seriously saying that you don't hear/see/FEEL the absolute LACK of humility here? mike is certainly not being humble! he has told this story roughly 100 million times, each time really driving home the point: I hung out with the Beatles/I'm important, etc. No sir, I wouldn't classify this diatribe as humble. (though I totally agree with your first point! it really is a cool little run-on, or whatever. hey man, let's just agree that Brian is king. :)
I'm pretty sure John Lennon was rolling in his grave the way mike "EGO" love butchered this tune. It would've been much better if Carl had sang lead, he had the right voice for a song like this.
@MrJeeples I think the BBs would have done well to avoid this song like the plague. I dare say that ML sings it because it was probably his bright idea to latch on to its wide popularity, in true ML fashion. I don't see this as a BBs song at all. Frankly, I'm glad ML sang it, and NOT Carl!!
@gregormann7 Good points gregormann7. I think you are right they should have avoided it altogether. Just as there are some BB songs that should not be attempted to be covered too!
beatles actually had done a version of imagine, but it was never released. in the let it be (naked) cd released a few years ago its call (john's pointo comp" or something of that sort.
Singing Imagine with a Radio Shack hat, just before meeting with President Regan at the White house. His heart pouring out to John Lennon out of sympathy - that's gotta be Mike Love.
@mdefil23 Sorry to disagree with you. I'm probably going to get an avalanche of hatred unleashed on me, but I think this is the most god-awful lyric ever written. Pure pretentious clap-trap. The music itself, based around that beautiful piano foundation, is exquisitely simple and profoundly lovely, very true. But those words are utterly reprehensible! Imagine no possessions...other than your Manhattan appartment, guitar collection, amps, mics, recording equipment, bank accounts...yeah sure.
jesus, he said how the world should be, but he also knows that when he abandons anything that would do nothing, he also once said he won't spend millions for food, because then those poor peple get one meaand then starve again, he was a realist.
@OropherThranduil You said, "...he said how the world should be..." and "...he was a realist." How something 'should' be relates to IDEALISM rather than REALISM. John Lennon was a very pathetic figure. His lyrics (and sometimes singing) invariably ruin his songs for me. I love a lot of his music---a very creative mind on that score. But also very adolescent in his grasp of reality. He was never able to overcome his demons. imho
okay, after you talked shit about his voice i can't take you serious anymore.
yes, trough idealism he showed us in a realistic way how the world is, that we are the ones who seperate ourselfes, imagine no countrys means that countrys are a problem of seperation between humanity, just like religion.
@OropherThranduil You said, "...you talked shit about his voice..." Huh? Is there some law that says I must like someone's voice? Did I not clearly say that his singing sometimes ruins his songs FOR ME? You like his voice? Bully for you! I'll give you an example in contrasts: 1) Because---Entirely beautiful; vs 2) Come Together---Beautiful music; god-awful grating lyrics. That's MY PERSONAL opinion. OK??
Is that Napolean Dynamite plating bass?

Carl: The voice of an angel, would have sounded great.
Brian and Dennis - The kind of gruff voices which would have added a touch of vulnerability to the song
Al: Fantastic voice
Bruce: Another fantastic voice, especially with ballads such as this.
Mike:.. urm.... yeah...
