The sound of thunder in the distance from the big guns will remain in my mind forever. Dropping in from the dark sky in the dead of night, scared as hell but proud to be there. That is when boys became men,or died trying.
To RetteTen4: It's nice to 'hear' that there are still people out there who didn't forget OUR recent past. A time in which a man's words and deeds were highly valued.
I've written a Portuguese version of the poem, I might post it here.
@RetteTen4 The Buffalo Shal not be forgotten...Thanx a stack for your time, sweat, blood , tears and sacrivice to secure a better future for me. You all are remembered.
I wish I'd lived in South Africa in the 80's. Then I could've gone for joining the 32 Battalion, too. Those guys make the Spartans look like diaper-wearing sissies. It's terrible the way they were treated by ANC and their own government.
.....The unit, too, received various awards, including a silver platter presented by two civilians, Alexander and Christopher Brits, in appreciation of the work done by the unit in the field of Durban deployment in KwaZulu-Natal during the troubled early 1990s. Engraved on the plate are the words : " To the men and women from 32 BN especially 322 Infantry Company, you generate faith and trust in the human race. Many thanks".
For those who don´t know nothing about 32 Battalion SADF : One of the soldiers of 32 Bat had requested that this song would be played at his FUNERAL, which therefore became the funeral march of any member of that battalion. Please correct me if I am wrong.
@andreasjakobliepe I heard it was a matter of name your price. They named a price and FW said sold to you in the red and blue. But to be fair I will never forget the jubulation of the white kids when the yes vote won the game.I was in primary school at the time and in every class I checked three kids at the most was upset about the results.
This song will ALWAYS be remembered by those who lived in RSA. Very emotional, as it was/still is used by 32 Battalion SADF. God Bless those brave soldiers who fought for our safety way back in the late '70 until their disgaraceful disbandment by the supreme commander of the land: FW de KLERK !!
I totally agree with you! I just listen to this amazing catchy tune because it have a very harmonic chant and a beautiful orchestrating! Forget the political struggle beneath our commentaries !Just enyo the song,man..;)
have to laugh at the pic above....

I have suffered, pained and hoped.....but most of all, I have lived times others would say were best forgotten.
At least now I am able to say that I am proud of what I was,
a 32 Battalion Soldier.

I was that which others did not want to be, I went where others feared to go, and did what others failed to do.
I asked nothing from those who gave nothing, and reluctantly accepted the thought of eternal loneliness ..... should I fail.
I have seen the face of terror; felt the stinging of cold fear; and enjoyed the sweet taste of a moment's love.

I worked with 32 a bit...a more professional bunch of ruffians one could not find.
Thank God they were on our side:)
(That is, they aimed at the other bloke)
Does anyone know what became of an officer by name of Jeager (rank Capt circa 1992) who was seconded to other training regiments at that point?

Alan Parker also played main guitar on "Jean Genie", "Hurdy Gurdy Man" and "No Regrets".
He also composed "News At Ten" and BBC's "Coast".
