That tuning is often refered to as "Chicago tuning".

Very nice. Why that particular tuning--is it because it's the same as the top 4 strings of a guitar, or is it some kind of traditional tuning?

I wish I could claim old-timey authenticity but alas, it is because I new the guitar chords and I didn't want to learn a whole new set of chords.

I'm retuning the banjo and giving it a go. I really like the strumming patterns and the banjo's sound to accompany folk songs.
