This game is gonna be awesome, but they need to make bigger ship explosions. Look at the Sphere @ 0:29, and the exploding ship on the left @ 0:41. In my mind I said "WTF?"

I'm pretty sure you Trek fans know how big ships explode on TNG shows. One big *BOOM*, not a *pop.* Anyway, I'm getting this game no matter what.

@QuantumNova Ive been playing it since it was released on Feb 2nd (US) and this does not do the actual graphics justice the explosions are awesome as it all the other aspects of the game. My only complaint is if you are not use to playing this type of game it may be hard to adapt as it is very in depth and technical . Remember this footage was "Beta test footage". Enjoy!

graphics dont go through the servers, only basic commands and communication. Only the client PC deals with the graphics.

The servers have to hold data for patches and other things, Plus if you have a graphic intensive game I'm sure people would require more bandwidth than usual of an MMO.

From what ive seen it looks like a star trek legacy mod, with customize able ships. im not going to buy unless: 1. the price tag is under like 40$. 2. my mom and dad let me buy it. 3. the gameplay isint the same as star trek legacy (whoever has the biggest / more ships wins)

Beta is now closed. I pre-purchased the Digital Deluxe copy off steam and got into the beta. The game is alright, its a slow start your first time around but once you get in the motion of things it gets better. It seems a bit boring when you are still learning what the game has in store.

I agree, the first few levels are pretty slow, but I got a taste of what higher levels are like and it gets far more challenging. especially when you can combine consoles and BO skill sets.with weapons and shields to get different results. I am looking forward to it

Unless STO has deeply involved away missions, exploration and diplomacy AS WELL AS all "teh ships blowed up", it will basically be a 3D shoot em up online. Not what Trek is about.

Episode Missions for EVERY Season and episode in the game (I do not know if it means all the Treks though).

I'd have to try it myself, the presentation in things like this give the implication that it treats space combat like ground combat in most mmos.

I honestly expected more from Cryptic in that regard, City of Heroes had by far the most enjoyable ground combat of any mmorpg, felt almost like a single player game sometimes in terms of controlls.

yes but they both boil down to the same concept, you don't have to aim, not even with the photon torpedo launchers (except for maybe to make sure they are in the fire arc) auto attacks etc.

evasive maneuvers don't seem to help much in this game, where as in the show they help considerably.

my guess is it will look fine until it blows up, solidifying my point that there hasn't been a good Trek game since Bridge Commander, Elite Force II and Armada II.

it's weird, all these so called "Gameplay footage" look 3D (in the sense of being able to fly up and down during combat etc and making use of all 3 axis)

How many Trek shows had 2D movement as well? Very few of the Trek shows actually showed ships on different planes. Sure, a few ships were higher or were at a slight angel. Very few times did you see ships fly in really odd planes.

Wrath of Khan made a point of using 3D movement in the mutara nebula, and video games, especially star trek ones, have consistently used all 3 axis in them whenever the technology or genre of game allowed it.

you can fly over and under ships around or side you can flank and add strategy you actually have to watch your shields just like the show swithicng between shield rotations adding power to foward shields or rotating your ship to side or rear shields since your foward shields are down play the game before calling it a failure

I noticed the watching shield fields with fore, aft, left, right. but no top, bottom.

the closest thing to flying above/below I saw in that vid of yours was when you turn to face enemies that are higher or lower, not so much on your own.

shame really, but meh, still doesn't look half as good space combat wise as bridge commander or SWG JTL was.

@Perion there is no "under or over shields in star trek" its always foward aft or the sides. there is a reverse but i rarely used it. i was fighitng very weak enemies so not much of actual game play in that video i was lvl 3. i have more videos with more detailed battles and more common fights. i will do a real starbase 24 video not that crap one cryptic released.

@adarons actually ur thinking 2D space combat same as cryptic but if u haven't notice in space it's a 2D envroment and as kirk stated in star trek 2 the wrath of khan ur thinking in 2d not 3D that is needed for space combat or in this case a largely space combat game and if u note all other ST games that's space combat related the ships have star, port aft, for, top and bottom shielding cuz it's needed if not the ship is a goner cuz the ship can be attacked from any way not just left or right

I got maybe 50% of it understood...my only thing...at Starbase - SOL System, You are right by earth...but u can't exploer ÖUR"solar system...only orbit earth,and go ON the starbase (its huge)....Id like to exploer..our solar system...Mars,Saturn etc...maybe they'll "patch"that eventually - otherwise thus far A- I cant wait to Play/play...

In next gen and voyager, the shields were always bubbles, the shields get nerfed or taken away in most trek movies and ds9. I think it being green means that it is borg enhanced like in voyager, or turning green from getting hit by the borg.
