It's sad but because of the way Steve sang he has unfortunately damaged his vocal chords and will never be able to sing again, not well anyway. He has enough self dignity to realize this, but has left us all this to listen to forever.

All you Stevie-bashers need to get a life. He can still sing! He's collaborated with many (just recently if you have any Perryknowledge). Listen to the David Pack recording....and this year with Cassidy. I'd be in line for anything he put out and pay any price for a concert ticket (and I'l bet I wouldn't be alone). So, he didn't sound 100% on the Graham tribute...neither did Cain/Schon. Every singer has bad days. Get back out here Stevie, we miss you!
Personally I do not believe his voice is "gone". I've heard him and there isn't anything I heard that would make me think he cannot sing anymore. He's done stuff with other artists and he's sung at the stadiums with the Giants and a few years ago with the White Sox and even without musical back up he sang, even after screaming during the games HE SANG. Heard him interviewed and he just burst into song, and hit every note.... Nope, don't believe it, he's just hurt, who wouldn't be???
@ginnysgems im a big big fan of perry even if im only 30 half of SP age...but nothings stays forever in this world. we all get older and everything fades and so the vocal pipes of steve perry... you can notice his voice and note registers from 70's and compare his last performance in graham bill awards in 1994 so different SP we knew back then...browse it here in youtube.
@zero2own 62 is not too old for singing. Placido Domingo sang great tenor well into his upper 60's and 70's. Steve has said he can still sing, has proven it many times up to a month ago in collaborations with other artists who are amazed by his singing. If you think his performance at Bill Graham's tribute concert is any indicator of his vocals now, you are mistaken. It is well known he had been sick during that time and wasn't really up to singing, however, did anyway in honor of Grahams.
but on the las vegas dvd in 2008 you can clearly see him lip syncing to stuido songs, PERRY NEVER DID THAT. Perry wants back in now, but they wont let him, ive heard that at 62 he cant hit his notes anymore, i dont believe that though. If Journey doesnt want him back they need to change there music and stop getting copy cat singers, they need to change there style, i swear on the escape album that song songs are Perry, again the studio did that. At least let him co headline with this kid.

The Frontiers tour, they were playing literally every day for over 2 years, sometimes more than 2 shows a night. Perry's voice sounds like it does now because of that, he admitted to lip syncing because he had to, he said he wanted nothing to do with it but 'the show had to go on'.

Exactly as a life long Journey fan born in 1982, Steve Perry is one of if not the greatest voices ever. I dont get why he was replaced by Augeri all because of his health. Money is the reason, they kicked out a man who was hurt. Augeri sucked so bad, he couldnt hit the really high notes. S. Perry was with this group for 21 years (off and on). He is truly "the voice". This album was most likely their greatest. Listen to some of their earlier albums and compare the music. There is a huge difference. Steve and the vocals and emotions couldn't be better, Neil and the guitars were on a different level. The whole band had finally matured to be seriously "on their game". It's a shame that ego's destroyed them.

The maturity displayed in this album and the full range of rock, ballads, the dark side (one more), and the meditative side (it's just the rain) just tells you they reached their plateau and was a culmination of 20+ years of life experiences. That new singer they got can't even compare with the soul SP brought all along.
I agree that Trial By Fire was one of the best albums they ever recorded. and the only one they never toured for and never pushed due to the God of the Golden Tenor retiring due to health reasons. I really love this album. It's a shame it never really got the attention it deserved. Sure, the grammy nomination was something, but the fact that they never got to promote this album on tour because it had so many amazing tracks. Trial by fire was a very underated Album !!! It's one of my favorites. It was modern Journey, and I think people weren't ready for that kind of change,

I agree that Trial By Fire was one of the best albums they ever recorded. and the only one they never toured for and never pushed due to the God of the Golden Tenor retiring due to health reasons. Steve Perry is and will always be on the top of everyone's list of singers. Rock, Soul, Blues, Oldies, and songs like this..He just couldn't suck if he tried. Sing the phone book Steve...people will buy it and listen.

@dnbuck Pineda reminds of the guy who got dumped by his super hot gf so he kept on looking for the girl that resembled her the most. That's what Journey is doing. Pineda got the pipes but not the soul that Steve possessed. It's the sign of the times when listeners are getting shallower and shallower and drowned by hip hop and crap music like that.

I found out his daughter went to school at fayettville colla. 30 mins from me. and he moved to southernpines which is 35mins on the other side of me) to be closer to her. what I wouldnt give to see him in person.

I really love this album. It's a shame it never really got the attention it deserved. Sure, the grammy nomination was something, but the fact that they never got to promote this album on tour because it had so many amazing tracks. It also angers me that this is the only album that came out with Steve Perry while I was alive.

Schon and Cain made the decision to fire him
Perrys ego had nothing to do with it Perry was the voice and created the melodies that made the songs hits
Something that the new filipino singer has yet to do and will never do Journey hasnt even had a hit nor radio exposure since Perry's exit
Obviously Perry was responsible for al the success which they resented!
