  • however evidence shows tall people will tend to have more MAX strength than relative strength, but in jones case relative strength is tarnished by his height, for him to deadlift 2x BW it would be 410, for someone 150lb to deadlift 2x bodyweight its only 300....thats a 110lb difference of weight lifted for a 55lb difference in bodyweight...short people arent in fact stronger, it only looks that way to uneducated people like you who dont know what a sinclair or wilks formula is

  • In case anyone wants to know... this video was made in 2009 when Jon Jones started training with me. Before he started training with me, he had never lifted weights a day in his life. So given that this was the first time he ever did deads, he's not half bad. I do have another video of him in 2011 doing deads and is amazing! Perfect form!

  • @keltek04 That's a lie... Jon Jones wrestled in College and in high-school. He had to have lifted some sort of weights in collegiate wrestling... it's mandatory to do some type of weight training.

  • Lamar Gant is 5'1" and although i dont know his reach, im assuming its 6'+...now someone who is 5'1" with a reach of below 5' and legs equally as stubby, with a torso length making up the difference...it doesnt matter that they are short, because their levers are TERRIBLE for deadlifting...this example is simply down scaled with gant representing jones, only difference is how bad jones' deadlift is considering hes a ufc champ and DOES in fact have a mechanical advantage in this lift

    You're wrong on many counts. He already is a heavyweight that cuts down a large amount of weight to get to 205. If he did have to have to ever worrry about making 205 weight limit he would easily weigh in at 240-250 for a heavy weight bout.

  • Everyone on here complaining about his size failed to notice he lifts about twice his bodyweight(I.E. about 450 pounds). He may not have all that puffy, disgusting looking vein popping bicep, but he doesn't have the beer gut look of professional body builders either... and he could run circles around most pro athletes in other sports, and hit harder than them as well.

  • @lex922 I typed that too fast, it was supposed to say 405. Most fighters can deadlift a 1 RM close to twice their natural bodyweight. I believe those red plates are 90 pound plates, so 180 on each side plus the bar(about 45 pounds) is 405.

And I used to train with several pro MMA fighters for smaller venues like Bellator and the RFC. They told me that if they lift too much then their cardio starts to suffer, and our conditioning coach noticed that the peak 1RM for functional strength tends to be around twice the bodyweight of the given individual.

Not all fighters train exactly the same, generally it's a camp module in which each phase builds off the last, but everyone trains slightly differently, and I just happen to have never used weights that aren't steel... and to be honest I'm a bit on the skinny side and strong for my size...

If you look at a Muay thai fighter´s legs they are skinny and you will think that they are vulnerable as fuck. But the truth is that theyre legs/shin can fucking break a guy´s huge leg muscle.

  • @johnnyu3 Technically, it's not lifting strength, it's muscle mass. He may be skinny, but his muscles are more dense than the bulk weight of a bodybuilder. He's still lifting about twice the amount he weighs, but he trains for functional strength and not bulk mass. There is a point where lifting too much screws with your functionality though, but there's a reason no pro fighter neglects strength training.
