My mum worked in the Accounts Office at Blacklers in the 60s and 70s. She got the job through the wife of the vicar of the church she went to. This lady was Company Secretary at Blacklers, a Mrs Hewitt. It was joked that half the staff at Blacklers came from St Thomas's Wavertree!
Absolutely loved Blacklers. Remember going with my Mum and having sandwiches & tea in the restaurant served by proper waitresses in b/w costumes. Riding on Blackie was always a highlight and was free.we could never have afforded a rocking horse of his calibre, I remember the staff wore gloves to serve and sent the payment in tubes through the piped system which was fascinating in itself. Think Grace Brothers with bells on! Grotto was always FAB. Christmas Amazing shows, A sad day when it closed
I too rode the horse in Blacklers dept store , it seemed like a full size horse at the ! I think it was ,Xmas grotto was great also it was home of The Dancing Waters!.
ladies pants of every descriptons, stockings of all colours ( mainly orange American Tan !! lol)..monogrammed hankerchiefs+hats of course!! ..just like Grace Bros shop in Are You Being Served,,,,my absolute favourite was the basement..toys,we couldn't afford :(,,cake making decorations,,The Grotto at chrismas (I hid from Santa,,LOL)..best of the rocking horse..made in Smithdown Rd Rocking Horse Shop..(bt appt to the Royals !)..spent hrs on that horse...:))))
I left school in 1961 and worked in Blacklers for a few months on the drapery counter . I had been working Saturdays only before that. It was just until I started my 'proper job' at the Dock Board in October 1961. I used to cut lengths of calico and flannel. I must admit I got quite skilled at it! .
Ahh, the rocking Horse!! That made shopping bearable for me. If I were good, I could go on the rocking Horse. I went to Broughton Hall, and Mum used to get my uniform from there. Also, remember the dancing Waters at Christmas time? Amazing. thanks for the memories.x
I remember the big one near Dickie Lewis, I used to get sent there in the late 60's for lyle stockings for my gran - it was the only shop that still sold them. Whatever happened to the rocking horse.

I used to ride the big rocking horse in Blacklers while my Mum pretended she could afford stuff. Happy days.

never forget the dancing waters! They were like ping pong balls on top of water fountains with coloured lights!
