I learned of her music when I was dating a guy who loved her music. It didn't take me long to admire her talent too! Didn't she write songs in the Brill Building?
Love Laura! I have a couple of her LPs and love them and cherish them, finally got the CD with all of her songs on it. She was so ahead of her time. Miss her too....
Laura Nyro's vocal ability was nothing less than operatic. She knew enough to quit smoking before modern, cancer stick-sucking pop tarts like Adele and Rihanna were even born! I wish a truly evolved, clean-living female pop singer would come along... It would restore my assumption that human evolution is actually possible.
I remember at Laura Nyro's piano is where Patti LaBelle honed her skills so she could take her show on the road. Thank you Dailyretro for your great and knowing posts. Please continue the good work.
An incredible song; I too listened only to the Three Dog Night version, in ignorance of Laura and her creation. I am glad to have heard her, finally...
A song of great beauty and heart rending Earth shaking power. I'm grateful for finding this video. I heard the Three Dog Night version about a zillion times before I heard this one and it just eclipsed everything else. Haunting and beautiful with soul searing passion. Then, now and Forever
I grew up loving the "Hit" version of this song, but after clicking on this, I was like: "Three Dog who...?" "Sorry guys, but you've been schooled good and proper by the amazing Ms Nyro. She has taken her song back, and her original is now the ONLY version I care to hear. Don't feel too bad tho, I still like you, and you still have "One" and "Out in the Country"...." ;)
This woman was crazy talented. Many a recording artist who scored with one of her songs owes her great tribute. I'm proud to share a birthday with her. I remembering listening to her when I was ten in '71, listening to her 1968 release Eli and the Thirteenth confession in my sister's room. I kept making her play Eli's Coming and Stoned Soul Picnic, lol. I have that original album, my sister gave it to me, because she said she didn't like it that much.
oh yeah...I t was the first one I bought with allowance money and I basically stayed in my room for days listening to it! Saved my silly little teenage life in many ways. I wish I still had the albums...they would be framed in a room today!
WELL,SORRY TO BUST YOUR BUBBLES,ALLOT OF PEOPLE SAY ""TAMMY WYNETTE,LORETTA LYNN,MERLE HAGGARD,WERE "GENIUS,GREAT SONG WRITTERS,BILLY RAY CYRUS,trite,my girlfriend then liked nyro, whiner,CRYBABY,GET LAID,GET MARRIED,STOP CRYIN ABOUT NOT GETTIN D**K,MOST PEOPLE THEN DUG ROCK,SHE WOULD HAVE WILTED AT WOODSTOCK,ANYWHERE,WHO WANTS TO HEAR DEPRESSING SHIT,AND MARRIAGE,F**K THAT,SHE MUST HAVE BEEN ABUSED,AND MEN USED HER,keep the crap to yourself, give me CREAM,ZEPPLIN,BEATLES,AIRPLANE,YAH
Few if any other musicians get it like Laura, she is in a class of her own.
trace my life in many ways by her music ,i heard "Gibson Street" at 17 and was mesmerised . Her work is so poetic and you think it would be so emotionally difficult to come up with this music, but she does.
That other people don't get her music.......perhaps they can't give themselves to the music?
I like her as a person, her integrity and self-belief, always quality musicians with her.
It is a crime that Nyro has been largely forgotten by most music lovers today. The woman is stratospheric - but doesn't it feel good to be a member of a few selext initiiates into her music : - D
@ElectraOnAzaleaPath It occurred to me that all it would take to remedy that would be a biopic on her life. Ellen Page has what it takes as an actress, and the look. They could just use the original recordings for the singing.
Saw her only a few months before she died, at a small venue, as wonderful as ever. She expressed what I feel better than any singer I know, I never tire of her (now for at least 40 years).
I want to thank all of you for putting her out there for all to appreciate. Her music & lyrics strum my heart & always will, She was a very important part of my young years & nothing has changed since that. A rare & excruciatingly powerful talent.
She has always spoken directly to my heart. She never got the due she so richly earned. When I listen to her now it's as if I'm still hearing her for the first time. She will never disappear in my heart & soul.
1968, this was -- the year I graduated from high school -- and she was just 3 years older than I was. Scary, isn't it , how she exploded with all that passion and all that amazing technique so damned young?
@TheMarcio2014 I AGREE....LAURA NYRO IS UNDILUTED PASSION/RAGE AND UNDILUTED ARTISTRY, PLUS SHE WAS POLITICAL..MARIAH CAREY SANG FOR A DICTATOR'S SUPER RICH ELITE GROUP OF THUGS...KADAFI.....LAURA WAS AHEAD OF HER TIME AND SHE TOOK A STAND BY REMAINING AN ARTIST AND DIDNOT SELL OUT...TO SOUND LIKE A PLASTIC SOUL....JUST LISTEN TO HER VOICE...ITS TOTALLY HONEST....SHE WAS AHEAD OF HER TIME AND AMAZINGLY UNDER- RATED AND A TRUE ORIGINAL.....
