  • This is the witch-dance that Hostess dances with Yersinia.

  • I learned of her music when I was dating a guy who loved her music. It didn't take me long to admire her talent too! Didn't she write songs in the Brill Building?

  • Love Laura! I have a couple of her LPs and love them and cherish them, finally got the CD with all of her songs on it. She was so ahead of her time. Miss her too....

  • This song is so amazing, I get chills! This should be unbelievably famous

  • way to go Eli!

  • Love you always.

  • She was amazing. She did whatever she wanted musically.

  • If I had only known Laura Nyro Wrote this-this song which was a major imfluence on me too..would have changed this girl's whole musical life...

  • This is just beautiful

  • Simply put:amazing!!!!-I have it on vinyl since it came out-every time I listen I am staggered.

  • laura and todd rundgren were just BORN with soul and amazing voices.

amazing. again, another genius under rated.

  • Laura Nyro's vocal ability was nothing less than operatic. She knew enough to quit smoking before modern, cancer stick-sucking pop tarts like Adele and Rihanna were even born! I wish a truly evolved, clean-living female pop singer would come along... It would restore my assumption that human evolution is actually possible.

  • @ryan33bttm - Joanna Newsom, Laura Marling, Alela Diane, Emily Jane White. Go ahead!

  • congrats on finally getting in the Hall of Fame!!! I wish she was alive to see this!!! She inspired many artists!!! very underrated in all areas!!!

  • Laura was a genius!

  • I swear, if frigging guns 'n roses gets into the rock and roll hall of fame before Laura Nyro...

  • @rrekydoc guns and roses just did get into the hall.

  • Incredible

  • and I was so glad she got some bucks from Striesands albums big time

  • @hampthechamp57 huh?

  • I loved this song when it came out.My friends named their boy Eli after this song.R.I.P. Laura.

  • Love to Laura on her birthday!

  • I remember at Laura Nyro's piano is where Patti LaBelle honed her skills so she could take her show on the road. Thank you Dailyretro for your great and knowing posts. Please continue the good work.

  • Happy Birthday Laura. We miss you!

  • An incredible song; I too listened only to the Three Dog Night version, in ignorance of Laura and her creation. I am glad to have heard her, finally...

  • A song of great beauty and heart rending Earth shaking power. I'm grateful for finding this video. I heard the Three Dog Night version about a zillion times before I heard this one and it just eclipsed everything else. Haunting and beautiful with soul searing passion. Then, now and Forever

  • Love you Laura. Beauty and talent. What a gift to us humans!

  • I grew up loving the "Hit" version of this song, but after clicking on this, I was like: "Three Dog who...?" "Sorry guys, but you've been schooled good and proper by the amazing Ms Nyro. She has taken her song back, and her original is now the ONLY version I care to hear. Don't feel too bad tho, I still like you, and you still have "One" and "Out in the Country"...." ;)

  • Get a towel

  • This woman was crazy talented. Many a recording artist who scored with one of her songs owes her great tribute. I'm proud to share a birthday with her. I remembering listening to her when I was ten in '71, listening to her 1968 release Eli and the Thirteenth confession in my sister's room. I kept making her play Eli's Coming and Stoned Soul Picnic, lol. I have that original album, my sister gave it to me, because she said she didn't like it that much.

  • @GoldtopSam

oh yeah...I t was the first one I bought with allowance money and I basically stayed in my room for days listening to it! Saved my silly little teenage life in many ways. I wish I still had the albums...they would be framed in a room today!

  • What a great talent she was, we were signed to the same music publishing company

  • Great album. Memories from boarding school. Thank you for the post.

  • When lilacs last in the dooryard bloomed

And the great star early drooped in the western sky in the night

I mourned and yet shall mourn with ever returning spring

    Walt Whitman

  • I still miss her so.

  • Few if any other musicians get it like Laura, she is in a class of her own.

trace my life in many ways by her music ,i heard "Gibson Street" at 17 and was mesmerised . Her work is so poetic and you think it would be so emotionally difficult to come up with this music, but she does.

That other people don't get her music.......perhaps they can't give themselves to the music?

I like her as a person, her integrity and self-belief, always quality musicians with her.

  • 最後まで天使でしたネ~私のローラ・ニーロ様、鮮烈"イーライズ・カミン"~貴方のカバーはロックのひとつの歴史、3ドッグ・ナイトバージョンもよかったです!

  • I loved this tune when i was 14 and never knew who she was!!

  • amen

  • It is a crime that Nyro has been largely forgotten by most music lovers today. The woman is stratospheric - but doesn't it feel good to be a member of a few selext initiiates into her music : - D

  • @ElectraOnAzaleaPath It occurred to me that all it would take to remedy that would be a biopic on her life. Ellen Page has what it takes as an actress, and the look. They could just use the original recordings for the singing.

  • This always gives me chills up and down my spine -- how BEAUTIFUL!!!! The music SOARS!!!!

  • My heart broke when they broke the news on the radio, back in 1997........

  • When I was a teen I love her songs.

  • An incredible voice and musical ability!

  • amazing ! thank you for posting !

  • Saw her only a few months before she died, at a small venue, as wonderful as ever. She expressed what I feel better than any singer I know, I never tire of her (now for at least 40 years).

  • this album was magic! I wore it out.

  • What a creative girl!

  • As sampled on this great version, Bobby Hughes Combination - "Kerma Elastica (Nicola Conte Remix)":

  • Gives me goosebumps to listen to Laura Nyro.

  • Oh no, I guess I won't leave the front door open a crack this Passover!

  • Always the best!!

  • I want to thank all of you for putting her out there for all to appreciate. Her music & lyrics strum my heart & always will, She was a very important part of my young years & nothing has changed since that. A rare & excruciatingly powerful talent.

  • She has always spoken directly to my heart. She never got the due she so richly earned. When I listen to her now it's as if I'm still hearing her for the first time. She will never disappear in my heart & soul.

  • Hello great vid anyone know guitar cords for Eli's Coming ? please write

  • 1968, this was -- the year I graduated from high school -- and she was just 3 years older than I was. Scary, isn't it , how she exploded with all that passion and all that amazing technique so damned young?

  • Thank you for posting this!

  • Oh man, that "Oh NOOOOOOOOOOO" at the end still gets to me after 43 years. I'm so glad you were sent to this world.

  • Brilliantly talented, one of a kind. I have always adored her.

  • @MANYWAYS2BE Yes. i miss such a talented person as well. Athens, Greece

  • A Genius. She will always be missed.

  • God Bless Laura Nyro:Fuck off Mariah Carey(Urg!)

  • @TheMarcio2014 I AGREE....LAURA NYRO IS UNDILUTED PASSION/RAGE AND UNDILUTED ARTISTRY, PLUS SHE WAS POLITICAL..MARIAH CAREY SANG FOR A DICTATOR'S SUPER RICH ELITE GROUP OF THUGS...KADAFI.....LAURA WAS AHEAD OF HER TIME AND SHE TOOK A STAND BY REMAINING AN ARTIST AND DIDNOT SELL OUT...TO SOUND LIKE A PLASTIC SOUL....JUST LISTEN TO HER VOICE...ITS TOTALLY HONEST....SHE WAS AHEAD OF HER TIME AND AMAZINGLY UNDER- RATED AND A TRUE ORIGINAL.....

  • Miss her soul

  • Thanks for sharing this---she was a monster talent.

  • broken heart
