The Mig-31 carries only 260 rounds, that means its depleted in less then 2 seconds. YOu really thing that works in a dogfight? 2 seconds of firing? its like: Pull trigger, letting go immediatly and its empty.

The MiG-31 isn't a dogfighter to begin with. It can be considered the last true interceptor, as it's one role was shooting down bombers, much like the Tu-28 it replaced. If the -31 got into a dogfight, it's either toast or they had better prey their opponent has a streak of bad luck.

The MiG-31 can intercept anything you throw at it - multiple targets at a time.

It has a big and powerful radar as well as long range Missiles and extreme speed - ideally it'll shoot down fighters from standoff distance and out-run any survivors.

Yep, exactly. IIRC it was the first plane with a PESA radar and look down shoot down capability. Its a pure interceptor/AWACS killer.

@subzyro5 The Mig31 is capable of MACH 2.8, which is 3,000 Km/h, that's more than half a MACH faster than the F-22. The F-15 is also .4 MACH slower and the F-35 is a full 1.2 MACH slower. These things just have to lock on with their VERY long range powerful sensor array, let loose a few missiles, then bug out long before any of those other aircraft even see them on their scopes.

@TalesOfWar No currently radar is capable of tracking a F-22 if we conclude that the Irbis-e is the most powerfull today radar. it tracks a target the size of 0,01 m2. now the F-22 is stated to have a 0,0001 m2 RCS.

- Long range missiles also have a poor kill-ratio. especially the early ones.

Read correcly, in Wiki it says it can fire 260 rounds in less than 2 sec, and the plane has 800 rounds. Not counting the 4xMach4 175km rockets (can lockon from as far as 400km). And can fly higher and faster than any US/EU fighter (SR-71 is grounded).

Actually, the M version never really went into production (which is too bad), but instead the existing mig-31's were upgraded to Mig-31BM versions.
