  • this was vary usefull, good video =] do you know about the white makeup??

  • @pnkrockerchik762 It used to be made out of lead I think, but the health problems were terrible, so it's now made of rice.

  • the lip brush is from a company called hakuhodo. the guy who owns the company named the brush after his wife. The company makes the brushes by hand.

  • thanks for posting how would want you get makeup info from an attractive man.....i love the history and the culture of japan...well i also like india culture too......thanks again

  • @lleanamarie I'm glad you liked it! Yes, for me, the historic and cultural aspects were as fascinating as the product itself.

  • This was a fab video, thanks

  • Thanks Angela. Good to know people are still watching it!

  • Wow, very neat stuff. Thanks for the information.

  • Thanks for that! Glad you liked it.

Your cartoon/rotoscope profile pic looks cool!

  • Thanks. I painted that of myself with photoshop :)

  • Nice video, thanks. A few random bits of info:

    - in Kyoto at least, what the geimaiko use is called Kyo-beni, so I'm not sure that one is made in Tokyo :-)

    - I've seen it put on the inside of shells instead of sake cups.

    - for the anime fans, in Omoide poroporo from Ghibli studios we see such a safflower farm.

  • Thanks for the additional info. I don't know the background for the Kyo-beni but just looking it up then, it looks like at least a different manufacturer, but possibly the same product. It may simply be branding, but I don't know if it's an old or new term.

Yes, shells are another way of doing it. There are also compacts with solid blocks of it apparently.

Ah, Ghibli's stuff is great! I haven't seen that one though. I'll keep an eye out for it when I do.

  • Oh my! This video is so cool; thank you so much. I learn something new everyday, eh?

  • Oh, I'm glad you liked it Alessandra! I suppose it's weird getting makeup history lessons from a guy, but this is just such a cool thing, I couldn't resist telling the story.

  • Beni is very wonderful stuff, stays faster than any modern red lipstick that I know of and the colour you achieve is a lot more vibrant! I'm glad someone has made a video to help people understand where it comes from. It's expensive, but worth it if you can get hold of it! I think you can also get it from eBay and other auction/internet shopping sites if you look hard enough too :)

  • Thanks Tetra, it's good to hear from people who knew what on earth I was talking about! There's very little information about it except from these people who actually make it.

It's interesting that traditional Japanese stuff often performs better than modern western equivalents. It's one of the things that keeps me interested in the culture. Judging from your channel, you'd probably get something out of the 'Kateigaho International Edition' magazine (now marketed as KIE). Worth a look.

  • I like a lot of things to come out of modern day Japan, but my real interest lies beneath the surface in the history, customs, and culture. It's no surprise then that I end up spending loads of my spare time reading up on all things relating to Hanamachi that are left which preserve the way of life and tools of the trade! It's a shame beni isn't widely sold and manufactured, but I guess it keeps this traditional world a little more exclusive. I will look into the magazine! Thank you!

  • Oh, in that case the magazine will blow your mind. It's all about Japanese art & culture with a heavy emphasis on traditional things in modern Japan. It's where I read about Beni. I show it in an early video (Getting to know YouTube) if you can sit through over 9 minutes of video!

Just search for the name and they have an English language site. In my opinion it's one of the best produced magazines in the world.

  • You realy know your stuff!

How about a tutorial when your lady gets back!?!

    As a woman ...Im curious!

    Thanks for the sites!

    Helives!

  • LOL! She just signed a new contract, so it looks like the long distance thing will continue for a while!

Thanks for the compliment - I see from your tutorials that you know your stuff too!

  • haha when i first saw the thumbnail of this video i thought it was going to be funny like some guy wearing geisha makeup. still very imformative. thanks for posting! but if you do ever decide to wear geisha makeup i'm sure you'll get a lot of hits

  • Hahaha! I'll keep it in mind if I ever decide to go 'all out' for views!

Thanks - I'm glad you liked it!

  • Thank you for doing research on traditional geisha makeup. I love old or dying cultures and hate to see them destroyed by un-educated people.

It was also highly entertaining. :)

  • Oh I'm glad you liked it! Yeah, there's something amazing about taking simple concepts and making them perfectly. It's like an elegant simplicity. The Japanese seem to specialise in it.

    Thanks for the comment!

  • oh n i have some cool stuff on ma syt if you wanna have a look...:)

  • Oh cool! Um, I'm having trouble getting the link right. Can you PM it to me?

  • once again thanks for the info, ur full ov it ..:) I'll check sm ov it out, thanks..!!

  • No worries Megan - anything to help.

  • Hi...I realy enjoyed that...I love Japanese culture so thanks for the info...:P

  • Thanks for that Megan - yeah, I really like it too. I think in my first vlog I mention a cool Japanese culture magazine I read, Kateigaho International Edition which is where I came across this in the first place (hmmm - am I repeating what I said in the video? Oh well...)

Japan is loads of fun! Well worth a look if you're in the neighbourhood.

Also, you might like to check out Claytonian here on YT. He covers a lot of Japanese stuff in his vlogs.

  • That was terribly informative and enjoyable- with pictures and links!! Thank you SO much for posting this!

    ~Kat

  • I'm really pleased you liked it Kat! Now you know what to get to go with your kimono. Should look very cool.

Oh yeah - um - links and stuff... Well there are a lot of Wikipedia addicts amongst my subscribers. Unfortunately there isn't a Wiki article for this product, but I like to give people as much 'further reading' as I can.

  • i just finished reading 'memoirs of a geisha'... this is soOoO coOL!!!

    thAnkS for sharing!!!

  • Oh good book! Isn't it great when things come together like that? OK, so I guess every topic under the sun is covered on YouTube, but it always feels like it's a huge coincidence. Very pleased you enjoyed it!

  • that was pretty cool, thanks for that :)

  • Glad you liked it!

I can't believe someone put in a claim against you high school dance performance. That's just wrong. I used to work out at Bankstown Airport, so very close to where you are.

  • yeh i was a bit shocked, since no other dances to that song were taken off, i cant figure out what the problem was... howd u know? does it say something?

  • When I was checking out your channel to see who you were, I clicked on the video and it said "This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Rajshri Media Limited" - what a shocking use of the copyright claim system.

  • oh well...bugger em.

  • I couldn't agree more. If that's how they want to treat people who are trying to embrace Indian culture through education, then let them have their petty victory.

  • Please e-mail me the materials used in this video and also the website of the company if there is one. I cried when I saw this video because I have been looking for this for about 3 and 1/2 years.

  • Oh, I'm glad it was useful then Caroline! The product is called 'Beni', and links are all in the description box. If you're still in Tokyo, it's probably easiest to go to the Isehan museum/shop (details on their site - in Japanese.) If you're back in NY, use the Edocraft link, they can mail stuff worldwide. If you need any more info, let me know. Also, let me know if it all works! ;)

  • was it expensive?

  • From memory it was about US$100 - maybe a bit more - which as a guy is _really_ expensive, but for women's makeup I guess it could be worse. Also, because it was a present for my girlfriend I wasn't that worried.

If you follow the links in the info panel, they have the current price in Japanese Yen.

  • very interesting!

  • Why thankyou very much - and thanks for the favourite!! :D

Belgium? You should check out the beer video!

  • Looks like you edited the video with Windows Movie Maker but I wonder about the clear picture quality by a 7 minutes long video. Whenever I upload a WMV the quality is much worse. So I am curious ... which format & settings do you use to save your videos?

  • Actually I'm really narked at the quality of WMM uploads since I've been on Vista. I save as 1 Mbps PAL VHS quality, which keeps me under the 100 Mb limit, but they all look out of focus when uploaded. It wasn't that way under XP. Possibly the PAL setting, but I don't get the save options I used to. So annoying when the original is clear. Lower res screws the titles.

  • Yeah, I know what you mean ... the original is crystal clear and here it looks like made by a camera of an old mobile phone. I will try the 1 MBps, too ... I always tried 2,1 MBps and 512 Kbps ... maybe 1 MBps makes it really better ;o) Thanks for the advice

  • Yeah, I guess the real solution is to take their advice and load exactly what they want, but it's just one more hassle. WMM doesn't even give me the option of the dimensions they say on YT. I try to keep high res as long as poss to preserve titles. I think 10 mins at 1 MBps is about 100 meg, so works OK. Still hate my quality though.

  • I hope YouTube will improve a bit about since I saw the video quality on LiveVideo ... but I don't want to change the site

  • Haven't looked at any others yet. I really like this little community. There's a great group of people in this corner of YT. I think the site itself is almost incidental. Still - we get a very fun hobby out of it!

:) LOL! I'm getting a bunch of German comments this afternoon! Everyone's in the same boat I think!

  • Yeah, the community here is great ... at the other sites it isn't like this here. It's really a fun hobby :o)

Oh, I thought they fixed the bug. I am getting all comment notifications in German, now (except a few in Spanish). But seems they still have some bugs about the language thingy

  • Oh, I meant comments from German people! I think we were all sitting around waiting for the big meal to start! All notifications I get are in English.

  • ah good, I still get a few Spanish notifications, but a while ago I got it in Japanese, Chinese, Italian ...

Hehehe, yeah, everyone is waiting for the big meal. I only had a small ordinary meal since I am living on my own and I ate too much already the days before, lol.

  • geisha makeup was since old Japan. the Edo period. Nice video!

  • Thankyou for the comment! I thought about going into the Edo Period a bit more, but wanted to stay with this being a show & tell more than a history lesson.

I included the subtitle about Tokyo being called Edo because when I said the company started in 'Tokyo' 180 years ago, it was technically incorrect, they started in 'Edo'.

I'm glad you liked it! (^_^)

  • Highest praise ever (extracted from an email):

    Konnichiwa Michael-san,

    I saw the new video.

It was great and I think you know about Beni better than me.

I forwarded the link to my many friends.

It will be greatly praised, I believe.

    Domo arigato,

    Masaro

  • Chicken. You didn't apply it. :p

Kuchibeni, not "Tebeni" (Handstick) LOL. :p

  • LOL! Yeah, it was a show & tell, not a drag act! ;)

Oh - I get it - you mean it is LIP red, not HAND red! Very funny! LOL! Man, that tested my translation skills...

  • Well, at least you got my little Japanese joke. :]

I actually didn't know tradtional Japanese lipstick was painted on cups like that. Interesting. I feel like I should have known that... But yeah, interesting. YouTube should have more of this and less fluff, but you know, that's just my $.02

  • The guys that make it say it was painted in cups or in a flat compact. I'm sure that when I've seen film or photos of Geisha being made up, they use more of a block of it. I imagine you'd go through it pretty fast if you were using it exclusively several times a day.

If you're after more thoughtful stuff on YT, try TheRavenOfPoe or JuneJulySeptember. Actually, check out my subscriptions list - I like this stuff too.

  • Interesting stuff, Michael - when I first saw the title I was thinking of the white powder stuff or whatever they cover their face with, rather than the "lipstick."

Hmm, wonder what would happen if you filled that cup with saki instead and drank it? Seems like a dangerous thing to leave in a Japanese bar (although I don't know why it'd be there in the first place). Later.

  • Having been out drinking with Japanese friends in Tokyo, I wouldn't be surprised at ANYTHING they did! If you've watched 'Lost in Translation' it's like that, but way more bizarre.

I think the sudden vivid 'cup of blood' look would give it away!!

I wasn't sure how to pitch the title, because it's just makeup, not 'Geisha makeup', but it sounded best.

  • Oh, and nothing would happen if you drank it. It's just colour, and is safe enough for them to use it in food (or direct onto skin). I guess it's like cochineal that way (which is made of crushed up beetles). You'd be in more trouble from the sake. I think...

  • That package looks so elegant. I thought too that you were going to apply it on yourself! I've noticed from my videos that I lick my lips a lot when I talk, so probably that wouldn't work with me... not that I use makeup or anything XD

  • :))) ... there comes a time in every man's life when noone is watching... ROFL!

Don't the Japanese do packaging well? I was in a massive Japanese run bookstore in Sydney, and they had the most amazing 'Washi' wrapping paper, but it was really expensive (A$27 a sheet!) Their cool stuff is why I get the magazine I describe in my 'Getting to know YouTube' video.

  • A$27 = CLP 11,750 For a sheet of paper!

  • Do you mean the Kinokuniya bookshop? That is such a wonderful store to browse in!

The packaging did look beautiful for the makeup =)

  • Hell yeah! I call it 'the shop that dare not speak its name' because I think I've yet to pronounce it correctly!

I was amazed at how big it was, BEFORE I walked across the bridge into the second half of it!! I could spend days in there. Waiting to meet a friend the other day, I killed over an hour in the stationary department alone.

It's also one of the few places to stock 'Kateigaho International Edition'.

  • Wow, you have lots of patience if you waited an hour for your friend X_x

  • LOL! Yeah, they had just come in from Ireland and were having trouble with the trains, so it was OK. I'm glad I had somewhere fun to hang out though!

(Actually it was the Irish girl & her Chilean boyfriend I mentioned before)

  • By the way, it would be cool if you two met each other and made a video about the meeting, since you live so close to each other apparently =p

  • The thought had occurred to me, because we get on well online, but there's something slightly odd about a 36 year old guy trying to meet up with a 20 year old girl he met off the internet.

Besides, for all I know, Jen could be a total psycho! ROFL! Have you SEEN her eyes?! ;D

I'm sure we will meet at some YT thing or other & odds on we will get on just fine.

  • Hahaha, yeah, you are right XD

And besides, it may kill the "magic" that YouTube provides =)

  • hehe, I always get lost trying to find the entrance in to that bookstore (I always end up in hat restaurant up there by mistake, lol) as well as finding the way out! The stationary section is incredibly interesting not to mention all the other sections!

  • The cafe inside or Ichi Ban Boshi outside? God - I want Ichi Ban Boshi right now! But they close at Bondi Junction in 40 minutes... Hmmm...

Kinokuniya rocks with awesomeness! I can't believe how much stuff they have on some really obscure topics. Makes the WBJ Borders look like a corner store.

  • I think it was Ichi Ban Boshi ;) I haven't eaten there before but it always looks delicious!

  • It's sooo awesome! I haven't been to that one, (there's always such a queue) but I go to the Bondi Junction one all the time. Oh, you sooo have to try it!

Actually, the BJ one can be good for celebrity spotting too.

  • Actually, it originally came with an additional layer of wrapping, which was a sheet of white paper over a sheet of red paper, folded up origami style & tied with the same raffia string.

I wanted to see it so much when it arrived, that I ditched the outer wrapping (it was too complex to redo) and presented it as you see it in the video. Still very cool.

There are some ultra elaborate lacquer-ware boxes & accessories you can get.

  • Haha, with that price, it's like just by buying that wrapping paper your gifts become perfectly wrapped instantly!

  • Yeah, I wish that was the case! It's like when you buy an expensive textbook, and feel like you should automatically know what's in it, just because you bought it!

  • Excellent video, Michael! It was fascinating and informative =) I love the colour changes of the Beni. I think it is now your duty to humanity to write the English Wikipedia page for this, hehe..

  • LOL! I'm not a Wiki contributor, but the thought has crossed my mind. Like I said in the PM, the distributor is now going to show the video to the guys that make it. Yikes!!

The colour change is it's real 'party trick' & was why I just HAD to see it for myself. The change from iridescent green to blood red is very dramatic. I'd love to know the chemistry & physics behind it.

  • I implore you to create a Wiki page for it ;) It is very rare these days to find an entire topic that is not on the English wiki and is not ridiculously obscure. This would make a great addition to the site!

  • Smiling at your enthusiasm! It actually sounds like a good idea. I have no clue how to go about it, but I guess it would be an interesting learning experience.

LOL! Yeah, I try to push the boundaries of human knowledge one video at a time...

  • wow, very fascinating :) ..I was sooo waiting for you to put it on yourself.. but I guess if it doesn't come off that easily, then applying it to your finger is a smart thing...

  • OK - now I can't stop laughing! While I was editing, it occurred to me that that would have been the obvious thing to do!

Later on, I had a friend come over who tried it on, but I couldn't convince her to do it on camera - silly YT shy people...

It actually looks a little darker than it used to. It originally went on a real vivid arterial blood red.

  • That was an awesome video, learned a lot.

  • Thanks! Once again, I bring you the obscure topics! Glad you got something out of it.

I've realised that all my videos are basically deadpan, which is nothing like what I'm like in real life. It's just the best way to get editing continuity. I should learn to vlog...

  • what a beautiful gift! and, hey, i learned a lot - so thanks! you're a great gift-giver, so it seems

  • Thanks! I just thought it was sooo cool & had to see it for myself. I'd never even heard of it until I just before I got it. It doesn't even have a Wikipedia article *shock*

LOL! Yeah, I do OK in the gift stakes. Sometimes by the skin of my teeth though. If all else fails - go for the blue box - people are ALWAYS happy with that one!

  • i'm not into jewelry...but i do like books and parfum

  • I'll bear it in mind... ;)

Ooh! I'm a book-giving savant! I have some really good bookstores near me - both indepenent and chain ones - and have a feel for what people should read, even if it's not what they would buy themselves. I've had some great reactions when I've gone out on a limb with the choices.

  • verry interesting mate!!

    love the song too

I am in Japan now and have lived here just over a year but was recently back long enough to see the harn adds

  • Yeah, couldn't go past the music!

Cool stuff - I'm going to have to go have a look at your channel. Japan's loads of fun - I like the way they have products to solve problems you never knew existed!

What are you doing up there?
