  • Thanks for this video. I just started SUP'ing the ocean. I go offshore about 1000 yards, then head North or South. Depending on the swell, I have to paddle more on the shore facing side of the board. I will try your "J paddling" tomorrow.

  • In the surf the step forward turn will not work (I'm pretty sure) because you will pearl (nose will dig in to the water) - Once you have speed on a wave you can dig in with the paddle to do quite dramatic turns
