This is my Sensei for about 8 days now and I am constantly impressed by his wisdom. He is by far the best Aikido teacher that I've ever come across. I am full of genuine excitement on Wed and Thur when he teaches in Mt View.
It's just an observation and a guess, however. I've been learning for a few years and I feel much more capable from a pugilistic perspective. But since I've began studying, I've learned the many other uses the teachings of aikido has in everyday life. If you don't believe in the concepts of aikido, it's probably not for you.
It seems to me that with the different adaptations of aikido (and hence, the different schools and their varying techniques) are different practical uses. Some schools, for instance, will teach a more "dance-like" form of aikido while another might teach a more practical means to defend yourself.
That seems right and is probably true of all the arts to a greater or lesser degree. Also within a given school, different students will emphasize their interests. O Sensei said, " Aikido does not call relative affairs good or bad but keeps all beings in a constant state of growth and development."
I agree whats the point of learning this style... take up oragami or something if you want to improve your mind.... in a real fight, these moves are totally unrealistic!!
IMO, aikido is synchronized dancing! Let me see one demo of an actual motivated attacker making a move on an Aikido master.... Just once in the entire history of mankind i want to see an actual practical application of Aikido, NOT dancing, NOT a demo where the attacker just sticks out his limbs to be immediately taken in one of those armlocks. Can an Aikidoka actually defent a true straight punch, jab, uppercut, kick or takedown attempt ? I think not, prove me wrong.

having fun while training, that is attractive.
btw, aikido is not for fighting since the fight stops as soon as it begins.

yeah, its not good for fighting, but its not bad to grab some pretty girl's hand during practice:P
aikido is useful for self defense when facing someone who is untrained with martial art

A friend said when she was told Aikido was no good for fighting, "It's good for not fighting."
O Sensei told us, "Winning means winning over the mind of discord in yourself. Its to accomplish your bestowed mission."
That's why I studied. I respect we have different interests and other paths fit for others. I hope our journeys help to,
"Create a beautiful world."

Avoiding fighting all together is true Aikido, fighting has few positive outcomes in most cases.
