Piiersall- Jimmy Piersall back to you in the ballpark, and I'm glad they don't let you see what is going on at Comiskey Park! One of the saddest sights I have seen in a ballpark in my life! This garbage of demolishing a record has turned into a fiasco!
Yes we were a little nuts in Chicago back then because we took what was said on the radio a little to seriously! :P This brings back memories though...
I pray that his albums are put in a crate at a Major League Baseball Game taken to center field and blown up real good like on Disco Demolition Night!!!!!!!
It must have been just terrible back then being ''forced'' to listen to all that classy sexy disco music with super funky bass lines and smokey vocals. My heart really does go out to all those redneck A-holes!
@MintVinyl disco was commercial sell-out music to the nth degree. it wasn't made by musicians, it was synthesized in a monsanto lab by coked up satanists in white lab coats.
this was not a just rally against bad music. it was a fight against the forces of evil.
All those kids are about 50 years old now. I know, because I was the right age (17) at the time to be there, and I'm almost 50. BTW, for everyone trying to make it a racial issue, disco did and does suck whether black, white or zebra striped.
@RRaquello Just because you don't like it it doesn't mean it sucked.Disco used complex ornate orchestrations from the likes of Cerrone, Alec R Constandinos, Salsoul Orchestra and gave power to oppressed minorities (gay, black, latino). Rock on the other hand was pretty formulaic. Knack My Sharona vs Chic Good Times? Give me a break. This was just a sheep mentality reaction to some redneck radio host with too much time on his hands. And why did they have the disco records in the first place?
Disco is pretty gay, all right. Not nearly as gay as giving a crap about what kind of music other people listen to, of course. Dahl accomplished an epic troll that night, humiliating both disco devotees and his own fans. Plus annoying the hell out of Sox fans, which is always a win.
or.....are you just maybe.....crusing the site looking for some nice drunk, white ass?
The only reason I ask is because.....well.....I just picked up Led Zepplin's "In Through The Out Door"..... and I plan on rockin' out to it tonight, tieing one on.....and Im white.....and.....well if you hit me up I can "fill you in" with the rest..... ; )
Disco Demolition WAS NOT about the music, though some of it was pretty lame; it was about the disco fad which had become a self-indulgent, arrogant, superficial lifestyle (for many, not all) and the people that were just tired of the snobby and corny aspects of it. All this talk about Disco Demolition being a 'riot' or a 'hate' event is ridiculous, it wasn't thought of as such until many years later because it's been over-analyzed and taken out of context with the time it was in.
This type of act will result in a prison sentence of three years in Illinois for disruption of a sports event or concert. Memories of July 1979 at old Comiskey Park seemed like yesterday. This type of behavior will land you in a correctional facility in Illinois and fined $50,000. A Solid 5!!
wait till the global warming demolition night occurs. All propaganda, (books and movies such as copies of the Inconvenient Truth) on climate warming and doom and gloom for the future will also be collected and burned in one giant bonfire at some event such as a concert or ball game.Maybe global warming will die on an unseasonably hot night as well.
My dad worked down the street from Sox Park at the time and he was to go into work at 11P that night. His boss called him up just B4 he was to leave for work and told him to stay home it was that crazy in the area. How many times does a boss tell his employees to stay home?
its time for rock/country demolition, i'll gather allot of non whites and we'll get it goin at a SF Giants game, but instead of blowing up CDs and what not, we'll kidnap some of the prominent rock/country artist of today and hand em at midfield, YEAH!!! KILL KRAZY KRACKERS
Or instead we can vaporize bird-brained racists like yourself who make everything about hating members of other races for no apparent reason other than YOUR personal dislike of THEIR personal tastes in music. Then we'd all be happy.
Was there----- stole my sisters disco records for five friends of mine and the problem nobody knows about is we paid the .98 cents to get in and they didnt take our records!!!! so during the game the tigers right and center fielders were getting bombarded with them. after the records were blown up and the dudes in left field jumped onto the field everyone looked at each other and said "LETS GO" the rest of course is history and thats how you do it all you kids out there.... I was there, so I never did see any of that night's news coverage of it until just now! Hilarious!
It was definitely a mob action, but it didn't seem like a "riot" at the time. It wasn't really violent, people weren't fighting, and the only damage I saw was to the field itself, from having so many people running around on it and grabbing "souvenier" chunks of turf. Oh yeah, and the bases, too.
LMAO at the hand-wringing fag news anchors. That shit was all over the news by the time we got home from the ballpark. My brother watched the game on TV, he said Jimmy Piersall just about had a stroke calling the action from the booth. All those stoners didn't have any disco records- those records were just fucked up scratched records or your parents Frankie Yankovic polka records. It's not like those Andy Frain ushers checked the labels. No matter-they blowed up reeeaaalll good...ROFL
DISCO SUCKS!!! Disco tried to make a comeback in the 90s, we fought against it and won! TECHNO got started in the 80s when it came from disco-tech. TECHNO has been around since the 80s and shall live forever!!! i'm a TECHNO composer and DJ. LONG LIVE TECHNO, TRANCE, BREAKBEAT AND HOUSE! DISCO SUCKS! DISCO SUCKS! DISCO SUCKS!
I was there the next day july 13. 1979 because it was my 14th birthday.
the outfield was so torn up that they tried to spray paint it GREEN! the start of the game was delayed for at least one hour and then just cancelled and we were given a rain check. I always remember comiskey park cause it smelled of beer and piss.
Disco was okay at first but the problem was its overpopularity and gross overexposure after Saturday Night Fever. By 1979 it was clear that disco had to go--evert movie and TV show had it, every music artist and group had at least one disco song out, even non-music celebrities were putting out disco albums. I for one was sick of it.
And for those who might call me a racist, I'm African-American and a proud Obama voter.
Just noticed on the tv screen in the news studio that the ballpark still photo they use is of Wrigley Field. Anyone notice this? How stupid is that? This was Old Comiskey Park where Disco Demo happened, how stupid is that?
i cant wait to see the next time they made like this to buried all those grunge , alternshit, top 40's and realty shows who pollute planet earth since nirvanna NOT WANTED SUXcess
Nice archive! I've definitely heard of this disco demolition night. I heard that people weren't just bringing in just Disco records to blow up either.
The best security at Comiskey, on the other hand, was when the Beatles played there in '65. This was a case of too much bad music and too many cases of Old Style.
meh....no disco definitely stank. It was no different back then than it is now. Nowadays rap groups are becoming more and more sappy and poppy to sell records. Disco did the same. Session bands/record producers took Philly Soul, stripped it of its grit/soul and turned it into long pop orchestra songs.
Nice of you trying to box me into racism, asshole. You know, you don't know what the kind of music I listen to or whether the musicians I like are black or white. But why the does that matter anyway? "I take it you don't like black music." I take it that you are a racist. How do you like that? Music is colorblind. Both the good and bad. Whether the musician is black or white. To put it more accurately, I like music made by musicians who are black, white, etc. I don't like Disco or modern day Rap.
Although I always liked Steve Dahl & Gary Meier, was all this really necessary? I mean did Disco really suck? I really don't think it was all that bad. Just a ball park full of blind sheep baaaaaaaaaa
You want to talk blind sheep & Steve Dahl. I heard a story that in 1982 just as the video game craze was taking off, Steve told his listeners that they could get a free video game by shoving a Nabisco 'Nilla Wafer in the coin slot. By the next day, every video game in Northern Illinois was in need of repair because they all had cookies shoved in the coin slots.
"Big Al" Lerner, there's a name from the past!!! Tim Weigel, too!!! Tim's sure got on a sedate suit! This newscast occurred 13 days before I turned four...LOL!!!
That reporter on the field looked as uncomfortable as hell. "Lot's of booze...Lot's of drugs.." I swear you could hear her gulp. She must've been thinking "Yikes! they don't pay me enough."
I wonder what was going on the first time Joel threw to her and she wasn't there. From his remark that "it is our policy not to add to the situation," it sounds like there was an executive decision to not make the switch.
When they finally go to her, she was standing right up against the remote van, and even then the cameraman had to work pretty hard to keep the drunks out of the shot. She sounded anxious to get the tape rolling and get the hell out of there.
