I know it was ages ago since this video was posted, but I'm having climb-up problems which contradict the advice given in this video. I can't do climb-ups properly because I'm always too far away from the wall when I pull & kick. If I'm out, then I kick, how can that make me come back in? Wouldn't I just be going more out, as if I was going to do a 180?
Who knows, this is nearly 3 years ago. And I don't rate climbups anymore.
Perhaps because if you don't get your chest above the wall, your weight will not be over the wall, let alone forwards ready for your legs to kick up..? It's all pretty simple, just go outside, do it, and think about where your weight was.
I see. Well I am more comfortable with pulling my chest more into the wall as opposed to keeping it up away... Hmm, i suppose it's all personal preference.
that was really good youve obvisaly worked on climb ups a lot I can do them but without the pop at the end which Iv noticed i need to work on cheers this is gonna be a fav of mine cheers =D
Dorman...thats like, 100 miles from me, lol, i live in batesburg... Im actually going to dorman this summer to visit a friend, we should run together :D
I can do them too but not on flat wall (I need to have lip) :) It's hard on flat wall without lip on top, very very hard... but hey, we don't work enough :)
Actually, it isn't. I started training barefoot about two months ago. I try to incorporate it in my training at least once a week. At first I was a bit scared I'd step on glass or something, but after that, I got used to it. Feels pretty cool so far. Helped me get softer landings
According to David Belle and many other traceurs, training barefoot is the best thing. It improves your technique so that you're not relying so much on your shoes as your own ability/skill.
when you just started out, I THINK that's fine. just improve on your pull up's explosiveness? but after you get stronger you should aim for this technique shown in the video.
It's impossible NOT to go into the wall unless you're very strong, like Teghead here. It takes a lot of conditioning to reach explosive climbups like his.
u know the part of a climbup where u kick ur feet up onto the wall. well whenever i try that. Only one leg does it and its like when i do that my other leg is like immobilized and i cant control it. Its really weird and it make it look like kinda awkward.
teg i really have to thank you. climbup progressed very much. i used to pull my upperbody into the wall. like you sed. now i pull it away from the wall. and its bloody quick;) i had the strenght but not the techniqeu. Thanks alot:)
I've watched that video tons of times and i still cant figure out whats wrong... im pretty sure there is something wrong with my technique, i can pull up pretty easily but when i put my entire palm on the wall (to do the deep) i just seem to slide down :S
@FriedStickMan maybe you aren't close enough to the wall then, you want to put your weight over your palms when you switch to them, unless you have super beast lats and can pull in from then.
I noticed that like in your videos, if you start with one leg lower and then quickly lift it towards your chest at the same time as your arms it helps a great deal. I also recently discovered that I can get up alot faster if I dont bother going to a straight arm position before I bring my feet to the top of the wall at the end of the climbup. It cuts out an unnecessary step and feels alots smoother.
True, I spent ages making sure my arms were straight before kicking my legs up before realising that it's much faster to allow some bend in your arm and press as you flick up rather than waiting about.
It's probably just quicker to sausage roll over the wall sometimes... I'll video it in a couple months.
Haha maybe.. I dunno, skin has good grip on some surfaces, like the kind of brick in this area on the vid. I don't really notice a difference in how the climbups feel.. unless it's on a mega slippy surface or something.
Teghead, I love your videos. You are a very skilled traceur. With the bare feet though, I do do running without shoes, but do you think you could make a video about training bare feet? I know a lot of people will start jumping into it without building up to it...maybe just give a minute video and explain somethings you done and are doing for bare feet training please.
To be honest with you, I've neglecting training barefoot and have almost totally lost everything I gained from it. I don't consider myself qualified to teach about it yet. Just like I look back on this video now and feel that it is misleading in parts, the "pull away then kick in" is over-exaggerated and just creates confusion..
what do you mean by "I've neglecting training barefoot and have almost totally lost everything I gained from it. " I got the first part...but how are you losing everything? and what did you have gained from it?
A heightened sense of awareness, and the condition of my feet. My sensitivity and quickness to respond to landings has regressed slightly lately, and the skin of my feet has become quite soft again.
This was invaluable. Not only is your Parkour impressive, but so is your teaching ability! Straightforward and to the point. Cleared up a lot of confusion for me. Thank you so much.
Love this tutorial, simple yet effective. I need to work on my 180's as I've spent almost no time with them yet. So I'll be referring to this lots! Hope you're well mate and training hard as always. Take care.
nice. this is gonna help me a lot, thx :D a while ago i did try to kick off with my feet to get both my palms over the edge of the wall, but it looks really slow and ugly. I guess i'll need more practise lol.
Aha, details! Nice work, this video. Love the sounds of Parkour, the slap on stone, makes me feel I'm out there doing what I want, training, training, training :) This video has been a good addition to some insights I had on climbups lately. Thanks for the video and have fun training :)
Not sure but at 2:06-07 it looks like the bricks move under your weight slightly. It may just be the camera but if not have a look just to make sure they don't suddenly fall off and land on your head.

@JustElijah
Yeah the video is a poor explanation, perhaps an exaggeration, or maybe just plain way off the mark.
Just get strong at pullups and kick hard with one leg while with the other leg either: a) swing back and up; b) lift the knee hard.
Teghead 4 months ago
@Teghead Ok cool, I'll try that. Cheerio.
