  • richie benaud sent me here

  • Great record ...1 ov my all time favourites

  • New Year 1977, a friend of mine and I went to his girlfriends house to celebrate the incoming of 1977! Unfortunately she had a bad case of shingles. So in Bulawayo there was a fountain where everyone went to bring in the New Year! I'm looking around for my friend and I found him snogging his girlfriends sister! When we all eventually got home we were greeted by this song being played at volume 45! Go figure!

  • It's almost as if you could take the wig off Braithwaite and show his current appearance.

  • So special this one - definitly one of the best hits EVER CREATED!

  • temazoooooooooooo! una GENIALIDAD! Inolvidable!

  • Great Aussie Talent.

  • Im Harveys Son. Dad was born in Sheffield and followed (and loved) his Sheffield wednesday owls. Had this jacket specially made up for him. Probably so his relatives in England could see him on TV wearing the teams colours as a hommage to his loved team. Hope this helps! Peace. i Still have his SWFC scarf hung up on my wall.

  • absolutely fantastic track from the mid-70s. This was one of my favorites when I was a young kid at school, which proves I had great taste even then!

  • R.I.P Harvey James you were real talent, !! you and your music will always be remembered. !

  • yeah, there hair lookslike it's from the 80's. They need to change that

  • At county cricket matches in England, it seems bizarre that the only music they ever played that was cricket related in some way was this, and now they don't do it anymore!

  • SO GREAT !!! THANX FOR SHARING!!!BEST REGARDS !!!

  • What a tune, so edvanced for the eire, one of my many favs from the year of music, the 70's, Well Done Sherbet

  • From all of us AUSSIES living in Greece...R.I.P. Harvey James. We had our own little tribute up here. Sherbet live on in our hearts. Australian acts are awesome and do my best to promote here in Greece all the 80'saussie bands esp Angels, Mi-Sex,Jo-Jo Zep & the Falcons, Cold Chisel to name just a few.

  • This is the first rock of mine. I was just a boy starting to listen English song via ancient record. It's was very impressive until now.

  • @Timmybry101 dont watch it then mis ffff

  • @Timmybry101 its not justin bieber, its not lady gaga, its not lil wayne, its real music, might wanna check it out, its healthy.

  • @Timmybry101 Basically a song written about a cricket bowler named Dennis Lilley who termed the phrase HOWZAT when he got an out.

  • @Timmybry101 ding bat

  • great song, and great band. i mind buying the single out of woolworths in clydebank :) think it cost me 45pence. ah back in the day...........

  • I love this song! Used to play it all the time back i the old days. Happy memories!

  • brilliant song

  • Used to sing this in my head whilst riding home on my Kwakka 750 ...Belfast ,mid winter !! Don't know why it kept me warm ..but there u go !!

  • Considering the lyrics, this is probably the best song to dedicate to all the sociopaths I've known and eventually figured out before they managed to cause a lot of damage, and yes, I just broke up with one of them.

  • Pity harvey got little exposure in this clip.....dickhead producer of the clip

  • @stuartk Harv let his fingers do the talking ;o)

  • what a group , bloody fantastic , rock on .

  • Brilliant song RIP harvey james you will never ever be forgotten

  • This song gets better every time I listen to it .... I always notice something new about it ... like I just discovered that at the end, Tony is singing "goodbye" in normal time and Garth is singing it in double time .... what a brilliant song ... when the part in the song where there is complete silence like everyone has to mute their instrument, you can just hear Alan grab hold of the crash cymbal trying to mute it so that it just can be heard ... how sad how sad how sad .... just goes to show

  • How wonderful it is to look back on this and to cherish the wonderful memories of Harvey James.

His guitar solo in this, I remember, was way ahead of it's time.

RIP, Harvey and warmest wishes and sympathy to the family.

  • my thoughts to harvey james ( sherbet ) and stevev prestwich ( cold chisel) , i would say that They were so great on thier band . i will miss you both so much

  • @Prettybluebird61 They played "howzat" on radio 2, here in england a few days ago, what a tune..., so i only found out on you tube, that harvey james, and steve prestwich had passed away...both aussie rock legends.

  • R.I.P. Harvey James

  • R.I.P. Harvey James

  • Harvey, who passed away on January 15, 2011, was not English. He was a native of Melbourne...and yes, the song was filled with cricket terms.

  • @streaming1950 youre Incorrect mate. Im his son and he was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire. Migrated to Australia when he was 7 years old.

  • R.I.P. Harvey James.

  • A really bright light has now dimmed in the world of music.

  • im so sad at the moment harvey has left us you will be missed i met you and the guys at the southern cross hotel when i was 17 and got all of your autographs they were good days im crying at the moment because sherbet were my life as i had a sad and awkward life and they made me very happy when i wasnt happy love you harvey wish you peace love sue from melton victoria xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • Rest in peace, Mr Harvey James, dead of lung cancer at 58.

  • Oh ! 34 y.........................

  • Is this about cricket or are they just making heaps of cricket terms??!!

  • @MrJuicyfulltoss this song is beautiful it makes me cry

  • Is this about cricket or are they just making heaps of cricket terms??!!

  • Is it just me or does the bassline or tune sound a lot like Atlanta Rythum Section's Imaginary Lover on parts?

  • I put this in my favs list , very easy listening . Must try it in karaoke some night...

  • Where's Daryl's shirt?

  • I played this as a single back in 1976 in W H Smith & Sons in Richmond Surrey at closing time! Memories memories!

  • @MrErnestLaw are you fred elliot i say are you fred elliot ... you keep repeating your self lol

  • I used to play this as a single at W H Smith in Richmond, Surrey at closing time back in 1976!.... Memories!!!!

  • One of the GREATEST aussie bands ever.

  • my first kiss around the time of this song, so very special, had months to find it because i miss spelled, how sad- howzat and diddent knew the bands name, love it

  • the guitars talk , bloody terrific .

  • 1 dislike well howzat?

  • SING IT RICHIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Clearly, someone screwed up at MCA Records(the band's US label at the time of the Howzat album)for not promoting them enough or radio for not playing them enough because these guys could have done very well here and the Howzat single could have climbed higher than its peak of #61 on the Billboard Hot 100,where they stayed for eight measly weeks between August and October of 1976.

They did have some AC chart success in the early '80s but Howzat remains thier high point in America.

  • Catchy song.

  • brilliant as usual for Australians !

  • Its only thru youtube that i discovered who sung this song.I would have grown up hearing this on the radio. Then during the 90's i managed to hear it again and thought i love this song amonst many others. Then after hearing it again recently i can actually watch the band on youtube. Thanks for posting!

  • Great memories of earlier years. What a wonderful band!!

  • nice a lot!

  • Reminds me of the hot summer between 75 and 76 - cricket, the beach, 3XY, long school holidays. My claim to fame was I played baseball with Darryl Braithwaite's cousin for Essendon... whoopy bloody do I hear you say. Still they did create some great music that was synonymous with a bygone era..

  • What a great Aussie band! What great memories!

  • God this is awesome. Sunday afternoons glued to the telly, Sherbet and Molly Meldrum... Thanks for posting this.

  • is the guitarist a Sheffield Wednesday fan? he's got SWFC on his jacket

  • @ollieswfc1995

Wouldn't make sense, seeing as this is an Aussie band and the clip was shot at Countdown studios in Melbourne, 1976.... that is, unless this clip was shot after the song was a hit in England and the jacket was picked up during the English tour..?

  • @nzoz1976 It clearly says Sheffield Wednesday on the back...

  • @nzoz1976

Guitarist Harvey James is English. Sherbets' clothes were made for them. I'd say Harvey had this particular jacket made at his request!

  • @skyhook75 oooh.... learn something new everyday!

  • @nzoz1976

Keep the aussie classics comin nzoz!!!! I love your work!!!

  • @nzoz1976 I'm dreadfully sorry to hear about Harveys death!!! I will never forget the year 1976, I was 6 years old! I remember this song very well I have this on the original single I bought from a second hand vinyl record shop about some 5 years ago. "Thanks for uploading this song it half brings back memories".

  • @nzoz1976 you have got no i dea

  • @nzoz1976 Im Harveys son. dad was a mad Sheffield wednesday fan and got the jacket made specifically for him in Sydney. Wore it on TV so his relatives in Sheffield could see him wearing the teams colors. Hope that clears it up! Peace

  • @ollieswfc1995 RIP Harvey James - guitarist with the SWFC jacket.

  • @ollieswfc1995 should support EVERTON FC!!

  • @ollieswfc1995 nzoz76 is right. Harvey James was from Sheffield, originally.

  • @ollieswfc1995 no sorry he's half German and it stands for Son Wier Frie Cahn

  • love the 'creepy' bass

  • I used to sing this to myself years ago,coz i really loved it.Then i'd forgotten about it til i heard it on the radio today.Another top tune from the 70's!

  • this was the first cassette i ever bought back in Gympie 76 !

  • Awesome quality!!! thanks for taking me back to '76, but with better audio.

  • This song was sooooo coool

  • HOWZAT!!! and the gf has to go.....looks like she's been been hitting someone elses middle stump

  • This song by sherbert is amazing also the video that was taken was like you were the cameraman in the audience and was really brilliant love Shirls xx

  • takes me back to murrayfield ice rink in edinburgh "77" ish

  • Absolutely, along with the oils they were huge....

  • Those boys would have pulled a huge amount of pussy back then.

The parties would have been awesome...>!!!!

Booze....stuff...and heaps of chicks...if only I had a time machine..!

  • @Gee40areretarded ...I was there, South Melbourne footy ground, girls everywhere hardly any blokes...Grouse.....!!!

  • Dam reminds me of Doonside/Glebe days,

Linda and Denise ??? two old friends that

loved the band but i allways said they were

    crap just to annoy them

  • Saw Daryl perform 2 nights ago. Sounds the same as he did in mid 70's.

  • @chrisp9590 Yeah I saw him a few weeks ago too, though I don't think he sounds the same. The singer's voice always changes throughout their life, usually mellowing and maturing in the latter years. In some aspects it's not as good today, but in others it's better.

I also found him to be very active on stage and very funny as he spoke between songs. Was good!

  • hmmm...prime example of someone trying to compare yesterday to today..got news for you..back then they sounded better..and dressed better matey

  • Ah, prime examples of the fashion disaster that was the 70s.

  • I've seen Sherbert preform live in Sydney. They were great and a very tight band.

  • And suddenly I'm at the roller skating in Coatbridge YMCA in 1976

  • Great trip down memory lane with this one. Love it ;)

  • it sounds like another mike batt [excuse the pun] song.......is it ?

  • @paulthepill

it wasn't written by mike batt... the sherbs did this one on their own....

  • great number!!!

    |I am a pc-nitwit, so I couldnt find it in our yearly top-2000 (holland). Can anyone? To me, it must be in the top 50... (but I am sure it won't...)

  • this songs been hauntin me all day lol there it is again lol

  • I really love this song...it has a jazzy grove ..I would love if somebody can tell me where I can download it..

    thanks

  • Bayu, get Realplayer, it has a "Download This Video" button,- when the mouse is placed over the top right of vids.

Another great. Miss old land Aussie.

  • Try Amazon digital downloads.

  • I really love this song..it has a jazzy groove ...would love to know where I can download it...

    thanks

  • And for the non-aussies - 'Howzat' is what bowlers say to the umpire when they are appealing to have the batsman out when the decision is dubious. Kind of reflects the intent of the song.

  • @davidg5969

Thank you for the info! I always thought it was a shorter version of : How's that ;-)))

Fantastic memories about this great song back in 1976!

  • I think cricket and the West Indies and Pommy cricket teams - they toured in OZ at the time and it was a big thing when this song was release - bit of 'marketing' and clever - but still a good song - Americans wouldn't understand

  • gud lyrics

  • GREAT song i like it!!!!!!

  • Aaaahhh...we were so young...

  • i wasn't born then

  • looks like the lead singer borrowed the Slade guitarist's wig and pulled it down lower over his forehead...

Yeah, sure I like the song (how can you not?) but doesn't it look like (see preceding sentences)?

  • how is the sexy base? and vocals....too hot......wait till someone re makes this it will be a hit!!!!

  • Can't believe I found it!! I've searched for this song for years... I was nine too, and I loved Sherbert

  • great song i was 9 years old in 1976 and had the same haircut

  • I'm the 100th rater of this vid and it has a higher rating than all of nigahiga, Fred and smoshes video.

If you don't know who nigahiga,Fred and smosh are. They are the top 3 most subscribed on Youtube.

    That's a great honour.

  • Wow... that's cool. I'll go and check out those three characters!

  • oh i know who Fred is! He annoys me!

He's probably influencing a generation to be just like him... the world is doomed!

  • don't worry smosh is quickly catching up to Fred

no one really likes him as much as they used to

    My fav is smosh

  • thats cuz only people who like this song look at the vid, if i get into a fred vid i rate it 0 coz hes a buttface

  • you have a great opinion about Fred

  • @campbelltheteddy hes smart in a way though like bl00dblitz said, most people on youtube are 10-13 years old and they like him

my friend when i lived in Australia liked him and he was 1 and a half years younger than me, he was immature but fun to be with anyways...

so fred is smart but he is still a buttface

  • I consider making a comment about his adorable haircut but think it will sound dorky, then I see that lots of others have commented on it too, so I'm in good company :) Great song, love the bass!

  • Great song. Timeless.

  • Their hair is so funny!!!!!!

    lol

  • thats the 70s sweetheat

  • Like davy Jones that man looks like as well thats what I think,

  • Cool lyrics..cheats fail..always! Great post..thankyou.

  • Kezzer, I booked them for the NAAFI in

    1980, cost £1,500 for 45mins on stage.

Total rip off! Still good tune though.

  • Great music! handsome men! What a band!~

  • ozi ozi ozi

  • No one of them was new zealand i think the drummer was

  • i want the name of his hairdresser... i need that special haircut.... so aussie!! ha!

  • This song is playing constantly when England are at the crease...
