Slavery was an issue but not the main issue.Cotton was king and the people view the tremendous tax that lincoln wanted to put on them as invasion.DAVIS NOR LINCOLN WERE THAT GREAT.
If you understand how much slaves cost back then, most people could not own a slave! and this is why most of the people could not own them and if they could at the time they would have and also we have to remember that the south was the bible belt too!
The Nazi-Slaver like Lee, Davis, Yancey, Toombs, used rhetoric that fools you dumb fuck to this day.
Only -- they made mistake of talking differently when they thought their words would not be known later. They would fuck up by telling the truth sometimes.
Davis and Stephens both bragged slavery was the FOUNDATION of the Confederacy. Lee wrote he was SUPPOSED to cause pain and cruelty to slaves -- it was God's will. Davis said God "delivered the negro to our hands" to enslave.
It worked very effectively as political rhetoric to justify the invasion of land that might have been regained by more diplomatic means... Political arguements are never about issues they're about powers/priveleges. For instance, Who's put the most money into the support of Prop 8? Not churches or moral authorities, but corporations who want to defend the economic priveleges of marriage, if sanctity was important we would fight against allowing people to get married in a drive thru by Elvis.
Hoaxie dumb fuck -- sorry idiot -- the Nazi like scum had taken over the South from 1820 on. Got that retard? They shut down free speech, free press, just like Nazis. They ended real elections. Just like Nazis.

You fucks lost an election -- despite your best attempts not to even allow one. You fucks had threatened all through the campaign that if Lincoln won, you would take that as "declaration of war".
SO you lose the election anyway -- and you go ballistic. You hang voters, threaten the capital, and attack US troops.
If that's what you fucks want to do again when you lose -- do it.
The reason that the EP only effected slavery in the Confederacy was because there were still 4 slave holding Border States that were on the fence. Lincoln felt that if he abolished slavery in the border states also, they would join the Confederacy. And yes, the overall aim of the EP was to prevent the South from gaining foriegn recognition, but in 1865, just before Lincoln's assassination, slavery was abolished in ALL the states.
merchant yes -- well said. But also Lincoln did the EP to fuck up the south -- and it worked. Besides foreign governments backing off the South - even more important, slaves in the South heard about black soldiers in North -- and how the were now free. Blacks started to leave their owners- - and that caused desertions in the CSA Army, and that led to end of war.
I have to disagree with you on one point. Slaves were leaving their masters as soon as it was knowlege that Union troops were not returning slaves to their masters. This began in 1861/62 when Gen. Ben Butler argued that returning slaves only aided the Confederacy, as slavery was a fairly large part of the South's economy. Large scale desertions started after 1864 when it was apperant that the war was lost for the South. It had nothing to do with the loss of slaves.

Abolitionism of Lincoln and the Republican party did not promote any such thing. In fact, Lincoln is attacked to this day for stating over and over he was not trying to remove slavery where it was.
The South didnt mention Haiti.
Some mentioned John Brown -- who was caught within hours, and was hung. So the Fed Gov was protecting slavery re Brown--but that didnt stop the SOuth from acting as if Lincoln and John brown were the same person
True, a good number of States' Ordinances of Secession did highlight disagreements with the Abolitionist view. But you know that you are ignoring much of the story: Abolitionism had come to promote murder of Southern whites by slaves. Now a strictly northern Party full of Abolitionists had one the White House and too much strength in the Congress to trust for their very safety. Remember, in Haiti, the whites had emancipated the slaves, but then slaves killed all the whites. South had no choice.
Well look, I had family on both sides. Shanty Irish unionists and Sharecropping confederates. So far as the family history goes it's been made plenty clear to me that neither of them were fighting for/against slavery. Add to that, and you might know this if you'd actually set foot in the south. The poverty level per capita is still higher here than in the northern states. We're still paying the economic cost of rebellion.
Hoaxie you dumb fuck -- your family doesnt know shit. Either do you.

Appreciate your ardent defense of the South. The only thing I take issue with is your comments about fighting. The South did not want to fight, it only wanted to be left alone. It was lincoln and his call for 30,000 troops to invade the newly formed Confederacy and force them to remain in the Union.
You are the one that is insanely pissed and a lunatic. Your foul language speaks much about your character and how you are not worth discussing any serios topic with.
So very true, take my ancestors for example. I can prove 11 confederate veterans in my family tree, I can also prove that none of them owned slaves. I continue to fly my confederate flag .
I think the problem is that the media and political correctness is what is causing the problem we are witnessing.
For too long, people have been accustomed to seeing other tarnish the flag but the other side to that is that no many speak up. If people spoke up, in particular the South, and make it a point to say hey, we are not about racism or the neo-nazis, etc. I think you will at least begin to see a change in attitude.
@cycloneous the political correctness is that everyone has to pretend the South was not founded on slavery, that their leaders were not violent cruel terrorist. Also, no one is supposed to mention that for 40 years, the South had been controlled by violent and unconstitutional means - stopping free press, stopping free speech, violating every part of the constitution, and not allowing real elections.
I hear the point your trying to make. But let's remember, the Confederate army was fighting on behalf of the states and therefore the interest of the states. The aristocracy in the south (the state) had an interest in maintaining and expanding slavery due to the profits they had achieved. Many of the poor "whites" in the south had become pacified with the illusion of white privilege and patriotism. Stop it.
I see what you are saying, and you make a good point, however, you have to understand what induced the southern States to leave the Union.
Remember, see slavery was not even the tip of the iceberg that made the war last so long. Did slavery spark the fire, yes, it did but far from being the sole cause. You have to look back to 1787 to see the initial cause, and that is the role of government.
I know it started with the non-slave holding states (N) and the slave holding states (S)having opposing views about whether the South would be permitted to count their enslave Africans as part of the population to boost their representation House of Reps., which they won with the 3/5 compromise.(1787) The principle concern of the day was the same as today, power and money. Just as today, the sons and daughters of the conquered people seem to stand as an irrelevant side bar to the story.
I will be the first to admit and say, while some southerners did fight for slavery, it would be imprudent of me to say that all southerners supported or had interest in it.
You are right with Stephens' speech, how can one not see that the confederacy birth was based on slavery, but I would say this, should we let his speech speak for all of the South and what they were fighting for?
You are right, the history of the U.S. is very fascinating and great. God speed!
hey! thanks so much for the response! isn't the history of this country fascinating?! i really enjoy hearing you talk about it :) no apology necessary!
you've provided the logical reasons that individuals who display the flag and have "southern pride" are not necessarily making the statement that slavery is the natural condition of blacks.
i still think that Stephens' speech clearly states that the confederacy is founded on that belief and nearly that belief alone. i guess it's mutated into...
something more neutral? i just don't know how one could read that speech and still stand behind that flag and tell black people not to be offended by it.
again, thank you SO much for making this video! i really appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective.
Stephen waa the Vice President of the CSA. He and Davis had totally different views on the founding of the CSA. Have you ever read Davis' Inaugural Adresses?
I could show you where Lincoln made similar comments to Stephen's in The Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858.
Critics of Stephens don't usually report (some might not be aware) that this particular speech was not written. Stephens was speaking from his head. Reporters' interpretations of the speech varied, and reports the speech took on lives of their own with growing distortions as it passed from writer to writer. Later in life, Stephens stated that many things attributed to that speech were untrue, but he could not produce a draft of the speech because he never wrote it. God save the South.
Ugly nonsense idiot. No reporters interpretations varied -- Stephens corrected the reporters notes AT THE TIME and approved the release of that exact transciption.
Stephens NEVER said anything in that was untrue you idiot -- in fact, he commented on it later, and AFFIRMED it yet again.
Nonsense idiot. The Declarations of Causes were written by each state -- including Mississippi. Go read them -- no fucking WONDER you lunatics have done all you could to hide them for 150 years.
Declarations of States had nothing to do with the Confederacy. Read the Confederate Constitution and see what the position of the Country was. Ooops, never mind, you are much to foul-mouthed and hating that nothing will do any good.
charlie - no dumb fuck -- Stephens went on a speaking tour TO EXPLAIN the new Constitution dumb fuck.
Thats what his JOB was you fucking idiot - to explain the Confederate Constitution. Davis never said shit to refute it. Those were his feelings too dumb fuck.
You said he refuted his VP -- go show me dumb fuck, where he refutes Stephens. What a fucking loser -- making up crap he has no idea about.
For thoughful posters: ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE CONFEDERACY Vol. 1 Pg 415
The speech was widely reported. Thoughtful Southerners, including JEFFERSON DAVIS, deplored Stephen's emphasis on slavery rather than the politically advantageous theme of state versus national sovereignty. Northern reaction was uniformly hostile. The abolitionist press used the speech to demand harsh measures from Abraham Lincoln. The speech's value to the Union cause, one Northern paper later judged, was "incalculable."
Yep. Southerners' opinions on the slavery issue varied plenty. The Southerners who looked forward to the end of slavery were not fond of the religiously zealous Yankee Abolitionists.
It is interesting that 12[InsectHimself] does not mention Stephens' astonishment over Lincoln's statement that he didn't care any more for the black slaves than hogs. When asked what might become of the freed slaves, Lincoln said they could root like hogs or die for all he cared.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Ugly dumb fuck -- I told your dumb ass the context of the supposed hog statement. the South had claimed "niggers" were like hogs -- no rights at all, you can kill em, burn em, rape em, sell em if you wanna.
Funny the other people there never reported that Funny also Lincoln was offering to pay the slave rapers compensation to free slaves -- but the South said no, they were getting too much fucking to sell.
THANKS FOR YOUR PERSPECTIVE. GOD SAVE THE CSA. REBEL YELL.

New markers honoring 18 black soldiers who
fought for the Confederacy will be dedicated Sunday at a cemetery
in Pulaski. All of the soldiers were from Giles County, and records show
many of them received a military pension.

Continued: Cathy Wood is president of the Giles County chapter of the
United Daughters of the Confederacy. She says her group and the
Sons of Confederate Veterans chapter joined to buy the footstone
markers, which will list the names, lifespans and unit numbers of
the men. Four of the soldiers are buried at Maplewood Cemetery, where the
stones have been placed. The others were buried in small family
cemeteries at farms around Giles County.

Funny how Lincon haters of the day -- Davis, Democrats , slave owners - all accused Lincoln of being a "nigger" lover.
In fact, they said his "secret plan" was to free the slaves in the South and make them equal.
WHen Lincoln wrote the EP - they ALL came out and said "See -- we told you his real plan was to free the niggers ,and this is proof!"
LIncoln stood up to the slave rapers and child sellers, kicked their ass, and they have been crying about it ever since.

hey! thanks so much for the response! isn't the history of this country fascinating?! i really enjoy hearing you talk about it :) no apology necessary!
you've provided the logical reasons that individuals who display the flag and have "southern pride" are not necessarily making the statement that slavery is the natural condition of blacks.
i still think that Stephens' speech clearly states that the confederacy is founded on that belief and nearly that belief alone. i guess it's mutated into...

something more neutral? i just don't know how one could read that speech and still stand behind that flag and tell black people not to be offended by it.
again, thank you SO much for making this video! i really appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective.

Stephen waa the Vice President of the CSA. He and Davis had totally different views on the founding of the CSA. Have you ever read Davis' Inaugural Adresses?
I could show you where Lincoln made similar comments to Stephen's in The Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858.

Tiff,
Critics of Stephens don't usually report (some might not be aware) that this particular speech was not written.

Foul-mouthed (re. your reply to CharlieReb1861) 12FlyMe,
If I stand corrected, please direct me to the sources of your version of history. If I am misinformed, I want to confidently learn the actual truth.

I dont have a version.
Im giving you the SOUTHS version at the time. Their OWN words, their OWN declarations of secession, their OWN speeches.
I should make a list -- well I can send you some of the Declarations of Sessions and speeches in email.

Thanks...his position was not the official position of the Confederacy and was widely condemned, esp by Jefferson Davis himself.

Sorry perpymotax, I don't have the time, or the desire, to discuss these intricate issues with foul mouthed posters.

The speech's value to the Union cause, one Northern paper later judged, was "incalculable."
charliereb1861 2 years ago 2

Ugly nonsense dumb fuck -- Lincoln Lincoln said "those who see the negro as mere merchandis should be kicked to death"
