  • Didn't know there was an extended version of Candles In The Rain.....outstanding!.....thank you for uploading it & peace.

  • I can't describe the feeling of re-dicovering a song from 35 years ago. Smiles and tears

  • I wish the music of this decade would emulate what this song Melanie did back then to motivate this younger generation . We need less violent protests and more peaceful and positive sit ins . As John said Power to the People and Give Peace a Chance ! Where is the "John Lennon" of this younger generation or are they too self absorbed in having the latest ipod or ipad to give a damn ?

  • Lay down, lay down, lay it all down let your white birds smile at the one's who stand and frown.

  • From the music to the lyrics this song is all emotions, bring tears to my eyes everytime I hear.

  • I Love this song,I grew up in the 70s and my mother played this song a lot.The vocals and harmony plus the funky quality of the song make it memorable. Plus I always found the lyrics fascinating as a child and hard to figure out yet compelling.

  • I LOVE your music

  • I love women

,we all need them-I love MELANIE\

  • Thanks, well done ! 11***********

  • It makes me cry and has always brought tears to my eyes even as a child. Her folky voice and the black gospel are so perfect here.

  • Most fantastic Song.....reveals the feeling of the 70's that the young had for each other..........

  • Three slipped on the like button.

  • Fucka buncha berthigginbottom. Melanie is the real deal - always was, always will be. 60 yrs old and still playing to a full house.

  • An incredible, timeless classic! Great to hear the full, 7:43 version of this song after many, many years!

  • She's playing at Amazing Things In Framingham Ma tomorrow

  • She spoke for those of us who can't sing. We thought it, she sang it - and so beautifully too. What a talent.

  • reminds me of summer 1970 Los Angeles. They played this one alot - always loved it. Music like this is the real deal.

  • Also the Edwin Hawkins band just really made this song so special!!!! It gives me goose bumps as well! It makes me just want to dance around! Someone filmed Melanie in Miami in the 70's to this song and it was perfect!!!! Thats kid of the way I feel when i hear this song! The band is just totally AWESOME!!!! Noe better than Melanie and Edwin Hawkins! I wish I could go back in time again!

  • This woman is incredible!!!! I have listened to her music as a child!

It seems as if this song has taken a 380! She talks about PEACE in this song!

MMMMM .........seems we should be talking about some of that NOW!!!!!!!!

She was a legion before her time! I think she was full of futuristic knowledge!!!

And I also compare some of Alanas Morrisette modern day music to Melanie's!

  • @sassykynurse My sister is an RN.....YAH bless all nurses.......found your post very "profound"...Let's just remember who really "LAID IT ALL DOWN" for all of us!!

  • I see why they edited the track down, it goes on way too long, but that jam in the second half is epic.

  • Legend has it this was a prodigy of Woodstock having to do with the crowd holding candles in the dark and /or rain. It's very spiritual in it's presentation

  • this lady,s voice made me name my daughter melanie. the power and the beauty of her sound is what i saw the frist time i held my little girl

  • thanks that is awesome!!!! I love this song!

  • I was about 5yo when this song came out.. it played to a group of us young hudlum during summer camp at the boy's club...until recently i didn't know who sung...with today tech you can find any song....thanks for posting it

  • WOW, such memories.......Atlanta, 1969/70, spending a lot of time in Piedmont Park and 14th/15th street! A Hippie wanna-be but driving a new car and wearing $200 boots (shame on me).

  • The thought that a group of unrelated people can change something--is that a mind blowing thought or what? Have we lost the ability to believe in this idea?

thank you melanie, love this song!

  • @joelunchbox1 I look around at all the bad going on in this world and I KNOW that we have lost the ability to care about peace in this world. We need someone to light a fire under us again.

  • to bad, there will never be a edwin hawkins singers again -man they really worked it, and mellonie--what a doll---!-Bravo

  • I truly remember this i live in the south and being afro american no one understood what it meant but me. I loved all her music...she was so deep....

  • saw her and her son perform this about 3-4 years ago................loved it then and now

  • saw her and her son perform this about 3-4 years ago................loved it then and now

  • I believe out of all of the prominent female vocailsts out today, K. T. Tunstall could make soulful, relevant music like this if she chose. She won't though because it won't sell...what a shame.

  • This song was written after Woodstock. She gave a interview explaining that she wanted to capture the Woodstock moment and she sure did. Classic song of peace, drugs and companionship.

  • would stevie nicks do this song?

  • @alexiskisses4u I don't know, hold on I'll ask her.

    Hey Stevie.......

  • It's 1970 all over again! I remember hearing this song many times back then. I think it got up to #6 on the charts. Melanie did a great job on it, and so did the Edwin Hawkins Singers backing her. I hear this usuallt at least once a week on my local oldies station. It still sounds good today!

  • always loved melanie's take on the movement provided in the expression let it all down, embracing compassion, celebration, love for life & the brotherhood, coupled with peace, always having each other's backs

  • Decades later this song still resonates and connects with a part of me that's inexplicable.

  • The music and the message are as relevant today as it was then.

  • Awesome

  • she's perfect!

  • So Electric with such Emotion, So Conscientious !! R&B Gospel .

  • I LOVE singing this song when I hear it. I'm only 34. I don't know about any political junk associated with it - I just know that I love my fellow man and this song inspires me to be a loving, more caring person. Go, Melanie! That voice of hers pierces my soul!

  • well im 22 and i also love here voice so its not a age thing haha!!

  • syntarro get with the year 2010 i'm from the woodstock days you have no idea what your saying kiddo you can't live your future by living in the past!that line is also from a melanie song

  • what ever you are below syntarro get up and smell the delicious coffee melanie has written only 368 songs since laydown in fact she's just written a song recently till they all come home stop, with the past and get with the program person below what a joke you are who are you kidding this is a beautiful gospel song you know nothing about has nothjing to do what your talking about in fact syntarro melanie never touched a drug in her life

  • Well, peace, love, dove---- A wonderful thought, but the drugs f---'d up a lot of that beautiful sentiment.

  • Well so did , poltics, our own colonialism, Alcohalism , lies and our young laying dead in Vietnam , Peace , Love and Dove's are still something to shoot for against our lower natures, many doctors , lawyers, teachers smoked pot back then or tried it most grew up to have families and careers which pokes your constipated opinion just where it belongs.right it the kaboos!! have a cocktail cheer up, let us enjoy a fucking song ok?

  • Oh man memories this brings. Magical time for better or worse.

  • Where can I buy this video? I live in the UK.

  • what video?

  • It is a shame we are so self centered that we cannot feel the paranoid oppression of our brothers and sisters accross the sea . Facisum is alive and well . In the form of some religions . Can we say Islam ? Shiites want to dominate Shia and vice a versa . Homeland Security was maybe set up to thwart these kind of threats . God Bless .... Joe Kolaski III U.S.A.F.

  • @ bboice02: Homeland Security was set up by your very own government to keep tYOU silent, blaming terrorism. Look what Bush did: how many cicilians and good soldiers have been killed in Iraq, in a war that has been started by Bush with LIES??? It is disgusting.

And yes, fascism is alive, even in my own country (Holland). We gotta raise our candles higher brother!!! Love, Sam

  • What the fuck are you doing man , this song is about Peace not anger. As long as you have anger and resentment Peace will struggle to the forefront . Put the past behind and move forward.

  • Some people from the 60's have changed their minds. Timothy Leary said he was wrong before he died.

Peace is always good to hope for at any cost.

  • i wonder what kind of songs she would write today about Homeland Insecurity and paranoid oppression

  • aww flashback LOL i remember the hippies in brooklyn blasting this song. i was in first grade in private school uniform lol hippies scared me back then lol

  • Cindy Lauper was in high school she bopping when this was written. I also like Cindy.

  • I heard this on an amorphous androginous album and thought this girl can sing

  • What a voice and it's so fantastic emotional. Let's sing together!

  • thanks it s beautiful

  • This is the song that started it all for me as a fan of Melanie! I saw her live in concert way back in March 1974! It was an enchanting time in my life that I shall never forget! She held us all captivated with her presence on the stage at Valley Forge Music Faire in Pennsylvania that year! What magical memories!

  • Abby Hoffmans spinning in his grave looking at how the peace generation sold out

  • Before Stevie Nicks and Heart there was this Lady! Her voice is unbelievable. I have NEVER heard another woman Howl like she does in this song. Probably could be re released now and still be a hit. Will they ever write em like this again?

  • Don't think so! Modern youth don't have a social conscience nor the balls to voice their beliefs. It's all about getting what you can out of life and FUCK your neighbour and fellow man. But like all cycles it will return, the social conscience I mean.

  • Great song and Melanie is a wonderful artist/vocalist, but the Edwin Hawkins Singers (usually ignored) really did a fantastic job backing her on this track.

  • My favorite song by melanie

  • So raise the candles high, like we did 40 years ago. thanks Chrissy and,, Melanie with the great Edwin ( Oh Happy Day ) Hawkins singers

  • Just love it!! and always has, it's Melanie at her best!!!

  • Outstanding.....I'm old now, but remember 1969, 1970 like it was yesterday.....Melanie never got the recognition she deserved. Maybe someday she will....Thanks!!!

  • she gets the recognition she deserves with every view on you tube,as more people are exposed to her, perhaps they will pass this artst from friend to friend as was done in her emergance.and oh yeah the song is fabulous.

  • This song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, even way after Woodstock she has that wonderful voice and musical talent.

  • @sr633 She was really feeling it huh dog? That's why I came here gives me GB's too.

  • First you need a talk radio program in America then you will be the most brillant person in the world!!!

  • maybe he can play the skinbanjo ! :O

  • But Jimi Hendrix could play the guitar, obama can not :O

  • Never has her message been as needed as now. I hope President Obama is listening. Peace to the World. xx

  • Obama is black :OO

  • This was a big hit on the big 89WLS radio in Chicago. I bought the 45 at Roseland Music on michigan ave. The record was in a photo sleeve. She was sitting cross legged in her baggy dress playing her 6-string. Long brown beautiful hair, beautiful brown eyes, sweet angelic face&voice. I've been in love with her ever since that day. My beautiful hippy girl you will always have a special place in my heart.

  • @lancechamplain - Thats Awesome! I bet Melanie read that and felt wonderful knowing that she touched you..

  • @lancechamplain

Search 'Any guy' then tell me if she's still your beautiful hippy girl lol

  • @BertHigginbottom Fuck off dickhead

  • @lancechamplain -- Same here... I fell in love with her the second I heard her and saw her. I had quite a few of her vinyl 45s and albums, when I was a kid.

  • This is the song that made me fall in love with Melanie. It's been a journey of more than 40 years; she's still my favorite performer (EVER).

I look forward to the day when she will be her inducted into the Music Hall of Fame. It's long overdue.

  • melanie is my godmother!!!!!!!!!

  • P.S. She's beautiful.

  • fabulous I bought this album in 1973 and fell in love with her what a voice

  • an invocation of happy times.

  • She did some song about having brand new roller skates which was pretty cool but what is really cool about her is that at the Powder Ridge Music Festival in the mountains of Connecticut which was cancelled after 200,000 people had gathered and all bands scheduled to appear were told they would not get payed and were forbidden to perform, she was the only one to defy the ban and played under a tree near the stage. She became the heroine of Powder Ridge.

  • My mother, who recently passed away, always had a hippy vibe about her. I remember the almost Powder Ridge Music Festival, the traffic it caused, and giving out bottles of pop to the "hippies" that were coming through the area. I think I was 10 and it was the coolest thing coming to CT. I only wish I could have seen her.

  • great story.

  • what is another good song by this artist?

  • try "brand new key" or "look what they've done to my song, Ma"

  • her best moment was the woodstock recording. search " Melanie Safka woodstock "

  • only 2000 people listen to this woodstock video of melanie! Shame on u all! ;O)

  • With this song, I fell in love with Melanie and her music back in 1970. She remains my favorite female performer.

  • By far the best version of this song I've ever heard. I didn't realize there even was an extended version. Love it! I've always been a big Melanie fan, and this confirms it! Thanks for sharing this with us!

  • agreed,, a fine hippy chick no doubt,,and this is a monster bass run ! i fell in love with her when i was 10 and 1st heard this song

  • Was this originally a Christian Worship song, made into a successful Protest song of the 60's? That's what I was told anyway.

  • Just checked all music guide. She wrote this song herself.

    Chris

  • Thanx. Then she was ahead of her time, unless she's a Christian herself.

  • marcante

  • linda musica e letra, se harmonizam e deixam a gente viajar nos anos dourados

  • I've never heard the extended version before. Thanks for posting it. I've always liked this song. She had a beautiful voice and was a beautiful girl as well. Her music is no long available. I can not find it anywhere on the market, so Thanks!

  • I haven"t heard this song ever since I was this young little shy kid. This was one of the all-time Peace Ballards of that era ROCK-ON !!

  • Just great

  • I have this version on an old cassette tape of "The Super Hit of the 70's".

But the sound on this one is so much better!
