saw this movie in theater around 1985 or so, I think. I liked it at the time and still do. I remember that some people criticized it because the angel looked like a homeless person. The critics were concerned that young children would be friendly toward a dangerous homeless person because that homeless person could be an angel, like Gideon. I think that's a stretch. I'm a big fan of all of Mary Steenburgen's impressive body of work. I don't understand why this movie is not on netflix.

I had no idea what it was all about and was left feeling confused as to why she was sobbing but years later watched it again when it was on TV and it all made sense (obviously lol) it's a beautiful film and never shown anymore. To be frank, I have no problem with this film whatsoever, and it certainly made a change from the usual sentimental festive film twaddle you usually get, instead, we have a darker and braver tone, filled with tragedy to begin with and it's certainly humbling.
The uploader has mixed feelings about this, fair enough, but it's a festive film that took me by surprise and the darker tone makes it so much the better. Just because it's a festive film, doesn't mean it has to be mushy. Great stuff.

One of my favorite Christmas movies of all time, but I think I know why. It really sparks an emotion within as if you can experience what they are feeling. A great movie gets you thinking and also grasps your emotions. They put us in the situation, and for that I love it.
Jesus loves you so much that He died on a cross for all our sins, as payment for them, so that we wouldn't have to burn in Hell paying for them ourselves. All we have to do is believe in Him, that He is God, died to save us from our sins, and rose again(defeating death). "For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal Life" ~ John 3:16 Jesus Christ is saving me from Hell. Who's saving you?

This movie was filmed in my home town of Owen Sound, it was a big deal in a town of 15000. My dad took me out to see the set for Santa's village, and we were in the scene with the lighting of the xmas tree! Ever since it's been my families favorite xmas movie, Thanks for posting.!

Yes Christmas is about the birth of Christ, love came down but the movie has validity. God still performs miracles!!! But people do NOT become angels. Angels are created by God sent to minister to His children. It was pleasant to watch the film. Merry CHRISTmas to one and all.

ha dont get me started on that 900 year old drunk(thats what it says in the bible).....but yes XMAS was the roman celebration of the winter solstice..and many other cultures celebrated it aswell long before the birth of yahweh son of the jewish sky god =)
I watch this religiously at Christmastime. Mary Steenburgen and Harry Dean Stanton prove their acting abilities in this film. The children are also wonderful as is Jan Rubes who has recently passed away. A wonderful Canadian film!
This is one of my favorite holiday movies because it doesn't rely on alot of special effects and stuff. The only thing...that little girl is SOOOO ANNOYING!!!! With her squeaky voice and her incessive talking...I want to strangle her!!
