I remember talking to a former Vietnamese combatant who explained that they used to consider that one VPA soldier as being equal to two or three US soldiers. It may pain you to admit that the US was defeated, but the facts are clear. The DRV achieved its strategic objective (expulsion of the imperialist invaders and re-unification of the country) and the US losts its (to maintain its puppet regime in the South). That's a victory.

People come on here commenting on their crappy small arms and 1970's style fighter planes! The issue here is that North Korea probably has about 50 nuclear weapons. Sure, they may not be able to deliver the nukes by missiles, but they can still cause a hell of a lot of problems for the rest of the world even by detonating them just off their border. Assuming that China and other countries won't provide any more aid than they do today, the North Korean infrastructure and weaponry will deteriorate a lot more in 10-20 years. Already many of their weapons have passed the best before date (much of it is from WW2 and the Soviet days). Also most of the infrastructure was built before the fall of the USSR, and once the concrete start to fall apart maybe the regime will too.

Soviet-era jet fighters use thermionics instead of the new-fangled microchips, transistors, etc. That being said: thermionics are far more resistant to EM blasts than even "hardened" modern electronics. Additionally, the AK47 wasn't built to be pretty or to be the darling of a gun show. It was engineered and built expressly for war, which is more than can be said for the M16 when it made its debut.

The Afghan theatre is a limited war and must be or there would be severe consequences for all involved. If we did what Mac Arthure wanted Truman to go along with we would have nuked out N.Korea. And then of couse lay the groundwork for WWIII. BTW, I am a history major from an accredited American University so I know what I am posting about.

People come on here commenting on their crappy small arms and 1970's style fighter planes! The issue here is that North Korea probably has about 50 nuclear weapons. Sure, they may not be able to deliver the nukes by missiles, but they can still cause a hell of a lot of problems for the rest of the world even by detonating them just off their border. If NK started any shit with the U.S. or its allies, I'm pretty sure the response would be complete and immediate destruction of NK.

So, how do you account for the fact that once this bombing campaign starts, the North is simply going to fire everything it has got and you can be rest assured that the American casualties will be in the thousands within days unlike the years it took in Afghanistan and Iraq for hat figure to be reached.

@snarkel234 I have no doubt in my mind that North Korea will not start a full scale war. They may be crazy but not stupid. Besides there is the small issue of their nukes :) As small as the yield maybe that is still enough to inflict heavy casualties and I am pretty sure their nukes are stronger than Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The MAD doctrine will ensure the existence of a continued uneasy peace (if you can call it that lol).

They have a victim complex along with a very childish way of doing their foreign and nuclear policies, most of it stemming from their Dear Leader.
KJI actually fucking told his troops to "prepare for combat" in May, but did he do anything? No. He threatened the US over our drills, but did he do anything? No.

They hardly have a few and I seriously doubt they would want to risk losing them half way across the ocean :) The more likely bet is that they will launch it on South and Japan aimed at US bases but the radiation fallout from an attack on South is likely to affect North as well.
MAD doctrine will prevail and everyone will end up spending billions forever literally.

We're trying to loosen hostilities and tension due to the fact that we have so many nuclear devices in our posession.We did have the world's largest stockpile of nukes during the cold war, however, judging a country on whether it has X amount of nukes is an invalid point seeing as it only takes a small percentage of them to wipe out the human race. Assuming that China and other countries won't provide any more aid than they do today, the North Korean infrastructure and weaponry will deteriorate a lot more in 10-20 years. Already many of their weapons have passed the best before date (much of it is from WW2 and the Soviet days). Also most of the infrastructure was built before the fall of the USSR, and once the concrete start to fall apart maybe the regime will too.

Truman did not want to lead America into another long war, but MacArthur had a plan to invade China. This disagreement led to MacArthur's demotion. Unfortunately, MacArthur was quite talented at kicking ass. As a result, the war ended with a ceasefire and 60 years later, tensions between North and South Korea are still high. Truman should have let MacArthur do his thing in my opinion.
