Kirituhi look similar to a Ta Moko but they are a reflection of the wearer rather than the wearers heritage, also Ta Moko requires Mana, earning of respect and honor from your Iwi. In my opinion, the Kirituhi and Ta Moko are both just as beautiful.

Ants', monkeys, lizards and fish for the most part are preyed upon by other animals that select them for survivability. if you wanted to do that then there would be serious consequences for you, especially when it comes to land and mana. if modern maori2009 were to be judged by pre 1839 tikanga, many of them would experience a great loss of mana and material possessions. why?

why? because mana 4 a block of land comes from a tipuna. that tipuna's mana is pased to the eldest to the next in line. that mana now belongs to a new person. pakeha then take that mana, put it in court and then reclassify that that mana. they spread the mana for a block to include a ridiculous amount of "share holders" cut that tikanga out, and mana reverts to tikanga maori. mana resides in the tuakana of the whanau, ie the direct descendant of the tipuna. modern maoris lose their shares.

here you have a mix of new and old tikanga. the tikanga of drugs and alcohol is new and introduced. maori culture adapted and changed to encompass these new introductions. this is different to your statement about customs etc not having to change or adapt. go back again to pre1839 and most rangatira maori still had moko and drank.

I agree w/ plonker- the tattoo gun is not the way Moko should be done.
The old way that leaves scar tissue is still the best.
plus, Maori men were considered unmanly if they showed any sign of weakness or pain while getting the Moko.
