She has an incredible voice, her acting and emotion is lacking though. This performance was great, but it has the potential to be absolutely breathtaking, and she just didn't meet that potential here. She is very good though :)
she has a good voice, she just needs to embrace it, i just played radames, and my aida was amazing. check her out at DANI PIKE, mabe youll see what im talking about
amazinggg job! i love how she really gets into her singing with motion with her body. like when she says "all i havta do" and she puts her hands to her side. yeah.. it just amazing
But I do have to agree about the acting. To me, she looks scared throughout the whole first half, starts to get a little into it in the middle and then pulls it back in at the end. Let it loose! This song is meant to start off strong and end stronger.
I don't mean to be rude or mean. She has amazing potential, just trying to give a little constructivness.
meh, I don't know. Her belting is really healthy, but out of tune during the second half of the song. And most performers overlook the massive importance of acting when it comes to broadway. There are a million amazing singers out there. Not a whole lot who are also amazing actors. Broadway requires both (plus dancing half the time.) High school needs to help kids grow as ACTORS too, not just singers.
I was simply trying to compliment her, not necessarily pick her apart with my "professional" opinion, though I could if I wanted. Anyone can critique. Few people can just say something nice, so I decided to do that and leave it at that. It's not that I disagree with what you're saying; it's just that I don't feel like it needed to be said.
Yeah, i guess it didn't have to be said. But generally the point of putting yourself online for the entire world to see is to be judged and critiqued. And it's not like I'm saying "this girl sucks!" Because she is incredibly talented, I'm just pointing out the flaws in the performance and that if she really aspires to become a better performer, she needs to understand her weak points to become stronger.
In that case, to balance your critiques, you should have made some references to the things she does well. And I think I read in the description that a friend of hers put this up, not her. I agree wholeheartedly that she needs to know what she could work on, but she also needs to be encouraged with what she does well. Thanks for not going crazy on me for disagreeing with you, by the way.
shes got amazing potential and excellent breath/voice control, but i agree... she needs to be a little more raw. This song is about giving up the person you love with all of your heart and telling yourself that it doesnt matter and putting your duty above all else.
omg its chelsey..i dated her n in 8th grade she was always a good singer..but she moved to malibu n we broke up shes the one that got away.. lol k im done hope your doin good chels..
I won't get into the race debate (but I did do a double when I saw her face) but I'll just say that her voice is incredible!! I love this song, and she sang it beautifully. Her voice is so strong, really amazing.
what i mean by race being important is that. certain roles call for a certain race look. if u don't fit it than your out. directors have a vision u must fit it. its the harsh reality. if anythign thinks talent exceeds your look than YOUR WRONG. its may at times but trust me look IS THE FIRST FIRST THING. then its talent and its the sad sad truth. n whhat i mean by being white n thin is a plus is cuz most roles are for light colored people compared to tan dark brown people. n weight is essential.
As an actor and director I have to tell everybody that Cool4lifee is right. Its much harder and much more uncommon to cast a white actress in a black role, then a black acrtress in a white role. How would you like to see The Color Purple with a white cast. Color Blind casting is used at times and that is fine. But as a lover of this show and its music, I don't think I would every want to do it without a black/white cast.
thank you very much for siding with me. and its even better because you are a director. that is what i tried to tell these people. its just how its meant to me. and the example of color purple is a good one.
some shows are just meant for a certain race and thats just how it works. and even MORE SO when its broadway.
you are completely right. but because this is a high school show i understand that powerful vocals were more important than being racially correct. though I agree I would never cast this show myself without a back/white cast.
yes exactly its a high school show vocals will be more important. if the only good singer happens to be white than cast her.. not the black gilr just cuz shes black.
but when it comes to a real braodway show we all know they would never cast a white girl to be aida. n they wont' cast a black girl to be in legally blonde. thanks for understanding :-)
that was great...try and think of your facial expressions though. im not sure if it was just the lighting or the video or something, but your face kind of looked akward
She has a very strong voice and she performes well. With some training I could easily magine her on broadway, but I have too agree that she is not read yet. But great talent!
race has nothing to do with it...its about talent in a show, after all, stage is "suspension of belief"....if you're going to say the Aida MUST be black then you may as well say that the musical MUST have been put on in Egypt. Thats just stupid....cant you see this girl's amazing talent...shes amazing!!
u have your opinion and others have another.i just think. when it comes to broadway it should be one of color. its always done liek that...in movies and in things the director has in mind the LOOK. and if your color applies than its should be followed. there so many other roles why if your white do u want aida? and IAM TALKIGN ABOUT BRAODWAY. high school it doesn't really mattter. cuz ITS MORE STUPID to pick a untalented colored person JUST cuz there colored .but for BROADWAY no. should LOOK it.
Your comments are barely legible, but I can think of several examples on BROADWAY where there has been color blind casting. Which in case you don't know, it means that COLOR DOESN'T MATTER. It's a great new open way of looking at things.
Les Mis: Black Javier, Hispanic Fantine, Asian Cosette all in one show.
Spring Awakening: Asians, and a slew of other kids who are clearly not 'German' rocking out in Germany?
And when these incidents DO happen, it's not because white people 'steal' the roles. There's something called a casting director, and they make the decisions.
And this video IS a high school performance. NOT broadway. You know nothing about what went on with the casting of this show, and for all you know this actress is not just 'white'. And maybe there weren't any girls that looked 'Nubian' (whatever that means) that fit the role.
ummm aida is suppose to be black i think thats a major part of the story this girl went to go get her hair braided to try and pass as black and its not really working for me in some plays you just cant switch the race because it screws up the story completely i think it would have been a better choice to give her the part that scott had played
how in the world can say she is better than the original aida
heather headley? whattttttttttt wow. iam sorry i knwo peopel have diff opinions but i could not DISSAGREE more with
if she were to auditon for teh role ON BRADOWAY she would not get aida. well she woudl'tn cuz she is white in the first place n race IS important in this play. but still. she good but not BETTER than heather wth...
i never stated that " oh because she is white this means she is not a good singer" however race is an IMPORTAnt part becuz aida is nubian. N GIVE it to oen who is white..when many colored woman since as good or betteR?
there are so many roles outthere for light people. WAY MORE. the only role for soemone of color and power dman take it away too ? comeone. someone who looks it and sings is A DESIRED SITUATION but this is FOR BROADWAY. not high. high school its w/e
i am sorry i believe your are mor ignorant for thinking that casting directors look for ANY TYPE OF extrinsic value for the role of AIDA. u are being " ignorant" for thinking the color of your skin FOR THIS CAST does NOT matter. IT DOES. u need a reality check. that the bussniess. wow u are get mad becase a white girl can't get aida that meant for someone of color? but of course its ignorant to SAY WHY CAN'T THEY CAST A BLACK GIRL FOR " LEGALLY BLOND"! come on now! YOU need a reality check
Umm, excuse me, but I think you're mistaken. I do agree that it would be awkward to cast a white actor for seaweed, because race is an important factor in that play. But in Aida?? The egyptians never ONCE mention the color of the Nubian's skin. They didn't want to capture them because they were black. They wanted control of the Nile. That's it.
in aida its important. the slaves where "black"..that why they were slaves. second just LOOK at the picture of its its half gold half black its a represenation of them. opposing. when someone is nubian they are ...dark in skin. i mean come on. u know its try. at least u dont' deny that race is important when it comes to roles. at least when its big like broadway. that why being white n thin is a plus plus in the musical theartre world. of course there is expections.
same with this one yes she has an amazing voice but when you watch her you feel like your missing something like feeling to the lyrics she loves this man but she has to let hm go and shes being sacrcastic when she says its easy as life and then she remembers her people and how shes there leader and they look up to her
She has a great voice but it doesnt catch the same attention as Heather. She's too soft in the parts that she is supposed to sound strong. She sounds too sweet rather then pissed off. And she moves her lips weird.
Her name is Chelsea, and she's in her second year as a theatre major on the East Coast. Thanks for the comment! And yes, she is fantastic. Check out my clip of her singing Defying Gravity from Wicked.
terrific vocal instrument. One of the most musical and lovely versions I have heard. I would only suggest that the performance from an acting and movement standpoint need a bit of work. Still, very impressed!!
This was absolutely amazing. I thought her acting was fine, plus, when I go to see a musical, I think about the music first and acting second. (Especially in a highschool production.)
Beautiful voice. Amazing. Not the best acting I've ever seen, but we have to remember that this is high school. Start with a voice, end up with the technical skills
she was good but there were certain notes that were flat and she had very little acting and she kept making wierd faces and needs to learn how to control that and she shook her head to much when she did her vibrato other than that she was good
People are taking this way to mother fucking seriously. This is HIGH SCHOOL and this girl sang her fucking ass off. People are such haters on here. And people that hate, will always only hate, and never amount to anything. You better do it girl! This was the deal.

aww its okay im sorry little girl. its okay to be jealous of someone who is ten times better than you. Talent scouts will look for you too, the few that aren't already looking to find Chel.
Her voice is amazing!! Her acting is nonexistent...if can put that voice with SOME acting skills she will be a force!! Right now the voice is her strongest suit. And what a voice it is. Aida is not a little shy girl the way she portrays in the video, but a woman who is giving up her love for her people. That was lost in the video completely.
I LOved it........A+++++..hehe...i mean i have to take into consdieration it is a High School Play..and a Job well done..I am however wanting more acting..but AIda..got Skill......
theres not enough emotion! this song is all about how she has to give up the man she loves. she doesn't show enough. although she has a wonderful voice...it just doesn't do anything for me without the acting.
lovely voice!!!! what key is this in?

Aida is not a little shy girl the way she portrays in the video, but a woman who is giving up her love for her people. That was lost in the video completely.

She was fantastic. I've watched a number of high school performers singing this song, and she's by far the best.

theres not enough emotion! this song is all about how she has to give up the man she loves. she doesn't show enough. although she has a wonderful voice...it just doesn't do anything for me without the acting.
