@tdfisk You should read, very carefully, the treaty of 1783, which ended the revolutionary war. There are MANY surprises in that document, but the relevant one is that the united states agreed to pay for all the lands and property confiscated. That debt was what triggered the civil war. The southern states refused to pay their share. That's the real reason for that war.
Winners of wars DON'T pay. The LOSERS pay. Our common understanding of US history is complete fiction.
