  • At 2:28, is the percussionist using wooden sticks, and what are the sizes of the bass drum and cymbal that he hits? (ignoring the Tom toms and bongos)

  • Flutist=Emmanuel Pahud

  • One of the best living FLUTIST

With one of the best living COMPOSER

Under direction of one of the best living CONDUCTOR

With the one of the best contemporary ORCHESTRA

    PERFORMING BRILLIANTLY .

    Bravo!!!!

  • Mr Carter is America's most respected and accomplished living composer. I find it exceptionally hard to accept that perhaps 1 out of 100,000 (or less) Americans have even heard of him, even if they don't like his music. Our culture here in America is dead as a doornail.

  • @sieracki001 I have--he's fabulous, an American original. And yes, our culture is dead as a doornaill---used to be innovative (rock and rock, Bernstein, Martha Graham)---but all reality shows now.

  • Wonderful piece! From what I can tell it's in a fairly classic concerto form. Of course, it's more challenging to the listener than Mozart, or even barber, but new art darn well should always be a challenge. No?

  • @moosatious

Bravo. If only your sentiment and attitude were more common....

  • Very nice. Definitely need to hear the rest of it.

  • A wonderful piece, and very different from some of Carter's other music, esp. in the long, lyrical line given the soloist. Can't wait to hear the whole thing.

  • wow I never thought I would Barenboim use a score in a performance lol

but this piece is new so its okay.

1:58 is the best lol it sounds like its all mistakes ahahaha

  • great chamber conception, needs a piano; to give a lttle more definition to what Carter has here;

  • @herma57

Listen back. There's a piano in the background, yo.

  • Bravo!! Atta boy, Berlin Philharmonic!!

  • Brano molto bello.Pahud é un grande flautista.Amo molto questo genere di musica.

  • Elliot Carter has written some of his best music the past two years, and he his 100 years old, and still kicking.

I wonder if there is a more interesting human being alive today.

  • @paytheline I doubt it! And there should be more American music in the concert halls--we are afraid of our own originals (not knocking Mozart, Beethoven)

  • Barenboim is the best. Viva Daniel, carajo!

  • pretty

  • wow, he really brings out the lyricism. Not easy music to grasp, but he is really doing a lot to make it expressive.

  • He sounds good to me in terms of technique, but I simply cannot understand this modern music... I can't find the logic.... nevertheless, the beginning sounds quite nice, but when it comes to the end, it simply becomes too modern for me.

Baremboim is such a great conducter, he conducts so effortlessly, it looks so easy when he conducts. Berlin can be proud of such a great man!

  • Höre mal seine Elegy! Es ist eine schöne Musik.

  • elisahettaVS, don judge the music with ur mood but let it take u to where it belong and have an open mind . u ll find the logic of its world by imaginations along the way.......it is the best way to appreciate! cheers!

  • You are quite right in a way. When I was younger for instance, I thought Mozart was the only acceptable Music. Then I discovered Rachmaninov, Shostakovic... you name them. I guess I just have to spend more time with this music in order to understand it. ^^

  • @ElisabettaVS it does take more attention than Mozart---but there is a logic there--its just spikier.

  • He's the perfect flautist, a musical genius!

    I've a dch pass and it's a wonderful idea!

Very compliments to Berliner Philharmonic and Emmanuel Pahud!

  • Amazing Orchestra!!!

  • in Pahud's hands, this concerto really comes alive and is wonderful to listen to!

On another note: Elliott will be 101 this December ... still giving master classes, I understand! Perhaps he has s subscription to the DCH!? ha ha ;)

  • Pahue e' meraviglio.

    E' un genio creatore.

    Oddio.. che bello....

  • Details make te brilliant shine, the diamond wanted and precious....

    Delicate.

    The flute a golden sound.

    And the camera... my loup.

    All is perfect.

  • Pahud is Fantastic!!! His sound on the Flute is unbelieveble!!! My favorite player without doubt.

And I'm happy to see that the orchestra has striven to interpret the modern repertoire too.

    Greetings from Brazil

  • pahud's amazing!

    what a sound he has!!
