At 2:28, is the percussionist using wooden sticks, and what are the sizes of the bass drum and cymbal that he hits? (ignoring the Tom toms and bongos)
Mr Carter is America's most respected and accomplished living composer. I find it exceptionally hard to accept that perhaps 1 out of 100,000 (or less) Americans have even heard of him, even if they don't like his music. Our culture here in America is dead as a doornail.
@sieracki001 I have--he's fabulous, an American original. And yes, our culture is dead as a doornaill---used to be innovative (rock and rock, Bernstein, Martha Graham)---but all reality shows now.
Wonderful piece! From what I can tell it's in a fairly classic concerto form. Of course, it's more challenging to the listener than Mozart, or even barber, but new art darn well should always be a challenge. No?
A wonderful piece, and very different from some of Carter's other music, esp. in the long, lyrical line given the soloist. Can't wait to hear the whole thing.
I must say that as a New Jersey guy, I have been a CSO fan since back in Fritz Reiner's days, but I must say The BP has a bevy of fine players, and always an intentsive audience. So do they usually sell out their concerts? Certainly the conductors do justice to the musicians. Bravo!
@paytheline I doubt it! And there should be more American music in the concert halls--we are afraid of our own originals (not knocking Mozart, Beethoven)
He sounds good to me in terms of technique, but I simply cannot understand this modern music... I can't find the logic.... nevertheless, the beginning sounds quite nice, but when it comes to the end, it simply becomes too modern for me.
Baremboim is such a great conducter, he conducts so effortlessly, it looks so easy when he conducts. Berlin can be proud of such a great man!
elisahettaVS, don judge the music with ur mood but let it take u to where it belong and have an open mind . u ll find the logic of its world by imaginations along the way.......it is the best way to appreciate! cheers!
You are quite right in a way. When I was younger for instance, I thought Mozart was the only acceptable Music. Then I discovered Rachmaninov, Shostakovic... you name them. I guess I just have to spend more time with this music in order to understand it. ^^

Elliot Carter has written some of his best music the past two years, and he his 100 years old, and still kicking.
I wonder if there is a more interesting human being alive today.

Barenboim is the best. Viva Daniel, carajo!

wow, he really brings out the lyricism. Not easy music to grasp, but he is really doing a lot to make it expressive.

Pahud is Fantastic!!! His sound on the Flute is unbelieveble!!! My favorite player without doubt.
And I'm happy to see that the orchestra has striven to interpret the modern repertoire too.
