  • Just as an aside, the plane you illustrated was a Gannet from 849B Flight which was on the "Old" HMS Ark Royal, not the one that is in Portsmouth Harbour today.

  • this is Great Gavin..!!!

    thank you

  • really like this! it is really hard to get an audience on youtube, so i want to ask everyone to check out my video where i painted a flower with light (not edited)! Thanks a lot!

  • lI believe I have learned more about photograpy and PhotoShop by watching three of your videos than I have from every other source I've used. Please keep posting these videos.

  • very nice!

  • Does this technique work if your not using raw files?

  • @Kcoolkid1 yes it does

  • Would Auto-Blend layers have been practical in this scenario? It would definitely be faster...I'm not sure if it would work well or not...

  • Magic

  • this is soooo cool, i'm gonna try it. i really like your channel, thankyou thankyou thankyou!!

    greetzz from Holland!

  • What a clever idea :)

  • Gavin, this is fantastic!!! Thankyou verymuch. :)

  • hi gavin great informative workshops keep them coming.

one question are you using photoshop cs5

  • That was most excellent.

  • what tripod and head did you use?

  • Well, as many of your instructional videos I loved this one. Now that I have seen a photoshop technique for stacking vs long exposures, I am keen to get on this and try it myself :)

My only thing, and I see this has been said before, is that I would also be interested in seeing how you perform this task using the "speedlight on a stick", just for the sake of learning the different techniques.

As always, great instructional. Cheers Gavin.

  • Lol, I was watching you light paint the plane and I saw the torch dimming and I thought, dang there go the batteries.

  • What is the difference of taking photos in RAW?

  • thanks for taking the time to post the entire process unlike others who post up the super speed ones and dont explain it like this. thank you.

  • Great work for your first bit of Light Painting photography, Gavin! If you want a challenge, try light painting with a model!

  • Have you tried a laser pointer before?

  • really helpful tutorial thax:D i shot my car the same way a few month ago but i never knew how to properly join them all, so i had to use the eraser... lol

    keep posting more tutorials gavin!

  • As always Gavin...another amazing vid. Thank you for your inspiration.

  • That was a great work. thanx Gavin.

  • Super Vid Gavin, you will have to let us know if you really did know about "Copy and Paste Style" or if you wanted us to learn the short cut, lol

  • Awesome video! Thanks!!!

There is an easier way to change the blend mode. It's what I use on star trails. Just change the first layer to Lighten (or whatever) and then right click that layer and choose "Copy Layer Style". Then select all the other layers you want to change, right click any of the selected layers and choose "Paste Layer Style". Don't know if this works on a Mac.

  • Hi Gavin,

Thanks for all your videos and specially this one!! Very instructing.

My only concern with this technique would be the color temperature from the torch, and would love to see this one done with one single speedlight.

    Again, thank you so much!!

    Ander Aguirre

  • @340ander If you shoot in RAW then the Colour temperature isn't a problem as it's set as part of the RAW processing. The problem would be if you mixed light sources during the shoot.

  • @PhotoGavin Of course Gavin, that is absolutely true, my question was referring to the case of more than one light sources, as you mentioned. Is there any chance you could try another tutorial with one speedlight?

Thanks for your answer, and again thanks for all your videos.

    Cheers from Bilbao

  • Hi there. Sorry to bother you but I just had to say thank you. Not just for this Tutorial but for the many videos I've watched of your lessons as part of Digital Photo Magazine. I came across this video by accident (youtube suggestion) and I thought I would use this to say how amazing your videos have been for me. Unlike some you have a genuine passion for what you do and it really comes across. I have learned so much from you. Thank you! Best wishes... Terry

  • As Always Gavin you are the Master of teaching and of course your Photoshop & photography is first class. When are you coming to New Zealand to show off your skills in person!

  • Gavin, you are the GOD of photoshop... and photography too

  • Hey is there any where i can find this image?

  • simply amazing!!! thanks so much for taking the time to putting these awesome tutorials for us to use!! A++

  • Oh to afford CS5 ;~(

  • @eddiegremlin Don't be down hearted. As I showed in the video it's a tiny bit quicker with CS5, but TOTALLY possible to do in any CS version of Photoshop.

  • @eddiegremlin uTorrent

  • @eddiegremlin Pirate it until you can afford it =)

  • @eddiegremlin torrent

  • he has the midas touch!

  • Very nice work. I will try this one day :)

  • I am guessing a remote release would be even better then a cable one. When checking what exposure how did you do this as to distance from subject will make a big difference to how much painting you had to do. Or was you the same distance with the light for every shoot?

  • @devonmale69 Remote release is better then cable, cable relese is better then pressing the shutter :-)

Light to subject distance was roughly constant, but part of the fun was it wasn't very scientific.

  • Well done Gavin ++++
