what if he said to JK Rowling that she was going to fail, because the odds where against her? What if he himself is a failed writer, and just pissed off? Dont let anybody tell you what you cant do. Especially not bearded men with pink shirts..
I think he is saying if your goal is to make money you are going to fail. I accept that because it is not why I want to do this Money isn't the only yardstick life can be measured by
I think he's just trying to say that very few ppl make serious money writing, relative to how many ppl aspire to do so... but to say someones doomed to fail is a bit of a stretch. Also he's a bit off... most novelists are not freelance writers as they are working under publishing contracts.... anyway his advice about actually writing and not putting it off is good

I write...'cause I have a twisted sense of humor...I like to shock my reader. I write 3-7 Pages a day...usually I work "per chapter" and my stories end with a moral...I write character plots, leading my reader deep into the head of one person and that persons problems! I need more coffee.
Usually when I write I get lost in the complication part and then go into a filler hell o 3 o and then I just start a new story...however, this kind of helps a bit :D

what if your just 13 years old and dont have a lot of expierence. i want to write a book that can possibly eaither be ficiton or nonfiction, but i'm only in middle school so i need help.
Damn, he had to talk about actually sitting down and writing the book. I have four novels on the go and write a few pages when I feel like it. Why can't it just come out of my head onto the computer? Actually, a page a day isn't so bad. I'd never thought of it like that before. I give top marks to the moustache too.
Wow thats the narrative arc taught in American highschools then no wonder so few American with such weak endings. The arc in canada has some extra action after the resolution to keep readers interested
i have a book i wrything calld Kingdoms From Heaven its about a anchint Times in a Fantasy World That Have Elfs Dark elfs Orcs Gurdians(Angels) Red Elfs Dwarfs Humans Deamons and many more creatures its about the Great War That Toke Two Ages and evrey age takes like 10 Tousnd Years And a before those ages There was A war Agienst The Dark Side of the great 7 Valandors =)))
@NikeBoy2031 One, keep it to yourself; two learn how to spell and punctuate. No one can teach someone how to write, you learn by writing. However, a few useful tips on publishers, agents, dialogue etc is always welcome. I agree with Sammiton about the moustache (11 secret herbs and spices went into growing that thing).
I think the best advice for fiction is to emerge yourself with something that is intimate with your life... imagine yourself as a character, and imagine something you would like to go through that you wouldn't normally find yourself. You get a good idea going and it gets pretty hard to stop... and start a journal that you religiously write in everyday, that will really help (and blog if your familiar). So with that I would like to give my two cents... which by quite frankly I find is much more.
nice. every time i start writing something i always end up getting bored or not going along through with me. I'm not sure why but i have never thought of the one page a day thing. It's pretty easy to do that, I'll writing with that in mind.
I think that the question that you asked "why do you want to write?" is a good one. Knowing the why will either keep us writing or help us pursue something else. I think an equally valid question is "Who do you want to be?" Because for anyone to have any success in any venture they have to BE someone and DO the work necessary to HAVE the amount of success that comes in that area.
me too. i think its because i have a lot going on, like school and after-school activities. thats why its normal for people our age to have less time to write a book. im 15, btw. started writing when i was about your age, so good for you!
Personally, I have to be in the mood to write, I can't just be like "Okay now I'm going to write" or it won't be any good. But at the same time when I do feel like writing I write, I'm not just sitting there at the keyboard like Johnny Depp in Secret Window. This guy is helping me though. Really great advice, thank you sir.
Oh definitely. Some authors can sit for twenty hours straight and pound away on their keyboard, and some authors can only write for an hour a day. Whatever works for them.
Miss Meyer is doing pretty fine, selling millions of copies of her books. No, I don't like Twilight, but it's just to show you can get pretty far with shoddy writing as long as you somehow, somewhere can incite readers to keep on going through your pages.
@Tprinces hahaha definitely. I watched twilight with my girl... and oh my god. Nothing. No climax. No story arc.... nothing. It was physically painful

i can easily write 5 pages in a half hour so i guess i can do ten pages in an hoour but booo hooo how do i limit speeden or lenghten my story's progress there really should be aguiide to this btw ive done ten chapters 90+pages :D only 2 more to go :)
I think these are quite good tips, probably suited to people like us, who don't know a thing about writing!! I have painstakingly written about 200 pages, but the research, continuous revision and editing, a one page per day is a reasonably good rate. Considering everything else that is involved in writing that is not actually writing.
I don't mean to be negative but what's with all of the good comments. You people are coming here for help and he says things like " I dont suppose I could talk you out of it" and "If you intend to make money, you will fail." At most points he tried to discourage the viewer and he only tells you things you should know by the age of twelve.

He tells everyone watching that they would fail - not good.
That is a very negative statement - not helpful.
I read On Writing by Stephen KIng. That was very helpful !
Stephen King made it, and he wants other writers to make it.
He was struggling in the beginning, like most of us, then he
broke through. If he had listened seriously to a guy like this
he might never have tried, then no one would even know who
he is. Then what would he be doing ? I'm going to write my novel !
