The perfect number 10 should be judged on 4 things. 1. Vision ( Territory, decision making ) 2. Kicking Goals ( Penalties, Conversions, drop kicks ) 3. Tackling ( Proper tackling not jersey pulling) 4. Running ( Breaking the line ) Carter: 1,2,3 & 4 Wilkinson: 1,2 & 3 Larkam: 1,3 & 4 Spencer: 1 & 4 Mertens: 1, 2 & 4 Fox: 1 & 2 Steyn: 2 Cooper: 1, 2 & 4 Giteau: 1, 3 & 4 Other 10's I haven't seen enough of to score. Other International 10's I haven't seen to much of so can't I say
I guess the person who posted this is a butt hurt cantab supporter. Why so butt hurt? You have won 7 championships blues only 3. You cantab suppourters are up yourself self centered pricks. As much as us auckland suppourters! Hence the rivalry
carlos too flashy shouldn't be there, carter yes, hook who?, wilkinson yes, should also have a south african such as naas botha, and an australian by the name of stephen larkam, barry john would another, plus hugo porta from argentina, also Frederic Michalak should get a mention.
carter is the best of all time.
watch out for kurtley beale potential champion fullback
y do these videos contain some welsh half ass, james hook does not belong in the same sentence with the word greatest, end of story..... earl rose on the other hand, lol.
yeah, name someon'e better then...should be interesting if not laughable because in the time's of mehrten's and now carter-there is nobody better. period
The best All Blacks first-five was Merhtans. He could control a game brilliantly. Carter is just an individual and doesn't have the sight to see the playmaking moves that Merhts made. Spencer was an inconsistent flair player, had as many bad games as good ones. Wilkinson is the first-five who has impacted a team the most and is probably the best ever.
@NZfootballfan666 Different eras, but John, Bennett and Davies are worth a mention. Pity for Davies he was around when the wheels had come off Welsh rugby. He did play in some crappy sides.
Grant fox andrew merts carlos and carter 4 of the greatest fly halfs ever to walk the planet. Aaron cruden up and comer expect to hear his name alot in the coming years.
@LeathalWorksInc all of them? you know your rugby dont you. 1 was wearing a wales shirt and another england shirt? know your stuff before you try giving it the big man
merhts the best. a long time and massive influence. carlos fucked up almost as much as he nailed it. carter not far behind merht and a few more years under the bealt we can say he has been as good- just a time factor to catch up. carter is a t least as talented.
other than Wilkinson, northern hemisphere fly-halfs are incredibly overrated. Larkham and Mehrtans were two of the greatest, with Spencer and Carter not far behind.
ronan o gara....the man is the greatest in the world under pressure kicks...billiant out of hand kicks..good to get the backline moving.......hook is not in that class
Another player Who I would consider one of the all time greats is Michael Lynagh! He and Nick Farr- Jones were a great combination. One of the best! As combinations go ; up there with Edwards and John.
there's a few missing like hernandez larkham giteau or steyn, and how does hook get in there? He can hardly even command a starting position for wales
when finding the best number ten, they have to be an all rounder like gavin henson except hes second five. daniel carter great in 2005/6, not to sure bout him atm. juan hernandez can do anything, so can carlos spencer. its a really tough descision to make. you can't really define an overall best first-five.
Im a fan of henson and welsh backplay, but lets be honest here hensons not fit to clean carters boots. Carter is the epitomy of the alround player, he doesnt have a single flaw in his game. Did you not follow the november grandslam? his form has been briliant
yeah and something spencer and to a lesser extent juan matin cant do; slow the fuck down and assess the situation. sometimes you can have too much flair
dont agree with carter being the best kicker well not any more misses lot of kicks these days. i think wilkinson is still the best goal kicker. cipriani has alot of potential think he is simalar is alot of aspects to carter
If those are your best 10's of all time you must have started watching rugby about 2005...you are missing several players that would put those you have suggested to shame.
Barry John, Mark Ella, Stephen Larkham, Phil Bennett, Michael Lynah, Nas Botha...hell even Ronan O'Gara should be on your list. Research my son - look into it.
h3nriee, i cnt believe wat u jst z! dan carter is the best 10 in the world! hes the best kicker in the world! and hes a far beter 10 than cipriani cn dream to b! carter is awsome in defence, he never misses tackles! and he reli knows how to control a game! all you have to do is put pressure on cipriani nd he messis it up! for example agianst the pacific islanders he got charged dwn on a kick dat ne person wif a brian wouldnt attempt! and to be honest carters makin 60 grand a year! r u? NO!
dan carter is fucking shit, hes got a good boot, but he carries the ball too much, even when they have an overlap. He defence is awful but its not nearly as bad a cipriani
Dan Carter is possibly the best no 10 of all time !! He has it all, and anyone who thinks his defence is awful obviously doesn,t know much about the game!!!
Matt Giteau is close behind him at the moment! The Ulsterman Knows what he's talking about!!
In my time: 1.Barry John 2.Mark Ella.... ahead of Carter, Wilkinson, Porta, Botha, Bennett... Kyle + Morgan were before my time, but Kyle has been voted greatest ever Irish player, ahead of Mike Gibson so he must have been pretty special.

DavidRhys1988 Being a Kiwi I judge players on how they've played against the All Blacks Best of the Welsh Barry John !He was instumental in '71 Lions series win in N.Z I don't think any opposition player has ever recieved the respect and adulation that he did from the N.Z. rugby public!! Closely followed by Johnathon Davies. But P Bennett imo had one good game '73 Baa Baas! Shocking in ''74, and instrumental in Lions losing in '77. Carter and Mehrtens for NZ Tops But I am a Kiwi
James hook is so good! Now Gatland is trying him at ful back so he can get better!! Lok at the try he's made up for lee byrne agaisnt england in the 6n 2008
erm mkwapower merthens is how you spell it and he is the first flyhalf in the entire video with the dropgoal... tbh people are thinking to recent what about players like Grant Fox? Come on...
Larkham should be in there, not a better passer of the ball in years. Fantastic reader of the game.
As for cipriani - he is not even close to these fellas. Nick Evans, Stephen Donald, Peter Grant or even bloody Kurtley Beale are higher on the talent list then that bloke.
Some great comments. Barry John would match them all. But Wilko it has to be, 2 World Cup finals, World Cup winners medal, 2 Grand Slams, 2 6 Nations championships, WORLD record points scorer, British Lion. Played against and beaten EVERY top rugby nation, home AND AWAY (inc the All Blacks) Speaks for its self. No other 10 has achieved that....Yet
Its not about what your team may have achieved but what skill set you bring to the table and longevity in applying it at the top level. Your assessment criteria must rank Englands reserve flyhalf to Johnny as the 2nd greatest ever then - see how laughable this is now.
eh dude first of all... hook is crap.. to put him the same league as carter and wilkinson is actually funny.. U also left out o gara who is the best fly half in the northern hem...
i agree if Barry john played to today he'd surpass them all. but he doesn't so i wont go on. Carter is a great all rounder, Wilko makes crunching hits. (shame about his pass the other day) King Carlos was special.
James Hook?...one for the future. he has something very special.
Carter was a pretty boy feeding off a good team. Never performed when it mattered and couldn't handle tough opposition when they were on form. Wilkinson is the best fly, and is battle proven.
"Never performed when it mattered"? Um what about the 2nd Lions test in 2005 or the "Dan Carter Show" as it is popularly known? JW is a great player, no doubt, but denying carter's talent is just ludicrious, and takes away from your argument. Cant the same claim be made about JW? Without the talent and guts of players like Martin Johnson he could never have risen to the heights he did in 2003.
Barry John,if he had todays training imagine how good hed be.Dan Carter is the most all round 10 iv ever seen,Wilko the best takleing 10 and Neil Jenkins,Lynah and Merthans the best goal kickers
What a tosser David Rhys, let me guess where you're from with 4 of your 6 players mentioned being Welsh??? We're on about best 10's in the World not the best 10's that you're related to. History shows that England have won the most 5/6 Nations, most grand slams and most triple crowns, oh...an we've won that Web Ellis trophy.
and just incase you're one of those guys hyping up Cipriani, incredibly talented though he is, he's played well at club level and a below par 6 nations so far. that doesn't make him the messiah i'm afraid.
I'm not hyping up Cipriani, he had a good game against Ireland last championship but needs to do a lot more than that to establish himself.
I'm not disputing the fact that innovative Welsh players in the 70's did a lot for the game, especially Gareth Edwards. Its when you start mentioning people like Cliff Morgan, it starts getting ridiculous.
lmao!!! cater...??? larkham shuld b in der instead ov him...but spencer is the best 1st five ever there are none as great as him...mertins yeah but spencer just had style cater is good but never done anything too spectacular wilkinson yeah i lyk him for his defence hes not scared and ummm dunno bout the other....hes ok
when? Merhts couldnt tackle, didnt have Spencers individual flair, speed and vision. Watch the tries spencer scores on Youtube and then post a link so we can all see Merhts equivalent... waiting... exactly!
But 1st five isnt about tries. Grant Fox scored one try but was a great 1st five. Spencer was a far better runner of the ball. I have said already on this that he should have been a no. 12. He would have carved up at 12 with the extra space and a big powerful 13 outside him. Mehrts was better at running a back line and directing play, which as I am sure you know, is what a 1st five is all about. I am NOT denying Spencers talent, and I am a Cantabrian bro!
Disagree wholeheartedly - Merths was allowed "time and space" to do as you say by playing behind dominant Canty, Sader & AB's forward packs. The odd time when his forwards were matched or beaten (and I do say odd time) and his time and space taken he had little impact whereas Spencer was still a threat in those same situations. Sure when given so much front foot ball Merhts on par with Carlos but assess their effectiveness behind not so dominant packs at Saints and Quins when they retired north!
youve named.Only Larkham could be considered a great amongst those you named. James Hook hasn't played nearly enough rugby to be even mentioned in the same breath as those other players.
My Top5 in no particular order are Ella , John, Porta Davies & Wilkinson.
ummmm...thats all good and happy and all....aren't yo forgettin the real greats though? like Barry John? Phil Bennett? Neil Jenkins? you know...just the legends of Rugby like....
carlos was a great player but not a great 1st five. I said from early on that he should have moved to 2nd five, as his natural instincts were much more like a no. 12 in terms of unpredictability. I remember he did play a few games for the ABs at 12 (as a replacement) and he was magic, he loved the extra space, plus we had another great kicker as an alternative to Mehrts.
You forget Grant Fox, Larkham, plus many others, Spencer doesn't rank!

Larkham should be in there, not a better passer of the ball in years. Fantastic reader of the game.
As for cipriani - he is not even close to these fellas. Nick Evans, Stephen Donald, Peter Grant or even bloody Kurtley Beale are higher on the talent list then that bloke.
jeigoe 3 years ago
If god could play rugby .He would,nt be as good as Barry John.
kelvinl228 3 years ago 2
the best is carlos spencer spencer is a king!
branzokiller 4 years ago
its named the greatest 10 but danny cipriani is not there so wtf is it named the greatest 10
theMteam23 4 years ago
because Cipriani has about 2 INTERNATIONALS TO HIS FUCKING NAME. sorry to break it to you but that doesnt make him a legend ffs.
The greatest of all time is Barry John, followed by Spencer, Carter, Wilko.
DavidRhys1988 3 years ago
The greatest ever are Barry John and Phil Bennett, end of the story!
slightreturn54 4 years ago 2
Some great comments. Barry John would match them all. But Wilko it has to be, 2 World Cup finals, World Cup winners medal, 2 Grand Slams, 2 6 Nations championships, WORLD record points scorer, British Lion. Played against and beaten EVERY top rugby nation, home AND AWAY (inc the All Blacks) Speaks for its self. No other 10 has achieved that....Yet
dartmoordog 4 years ago 2
Its not about what your team may have achieved but what skill set you bring to the table and longevity in applying it at the top level. Your assessment criteria must rank Englands reserve flyhalf to Johnny as the 2nd greatest ever then - see how laughable this is now.
maorifallah 3 years ago
eh dude first of all... hook is crap.. to put him the same league as carter and wilkinson is actually funny.. U also left out o gara who is the best fly half in the northern hem...

Carter - the greatest all rounder.
Larkham - the sweetest and illusive passer.
Johnny - the most reliable kicker.
Giteau - my fav. player :D
dennyh86 4 years ago
i agree if Barry john played to today he'd surpass them all. but he doesn't so i wont go on.

HazzaLambert 4 years ago
"Never performed when it mattered"? Um what about the 2nd Lions test in 2005 or the "Dan Carter Show" as it is popularly known? JW is a great player, no doubt, but denying carter's talent is just ludicrious, and takes away from your argument. Cant the same claim be made about JW? Without the talent and guts of players like Martin Johnson he could never have risen to the heights he did in 2003.
goosoid 2 years ago
Barry John,if he had todays training imagine how good hed be.Dan Carter is the most all round 10 iv ever seen,Wilko the best takleing 10 and Neil Jenkins,Lynah and Merthans the best goal kickers
IanRush89 4 years ago
yeah, Carter has his career ahead of him, as has James hook. alot to prove.
Has to be
Barry John
Carlos Spencer
Phil Bennett
John Davies
Larkham
Cliff Morgan
sorry most of them are welsh. but history doesn't lie :D
DavidRhys1988 4 years ago
What a tosser David Rhys, let me guess where you're from with 4 of your 6 players mentioned being Welsh??? We're on about best 10's in the World not the best 10's that you're related to. History shows that England have won the most 5/6 Nations, most grand slams and most triple crowns, oh...an we've won that Web Ellis trophy.
russbantz 3 years ago
and just incase you're one of those guys hyping up Cipriani, incredibly talented though he is, he's played well at club level and a below par 6 nations so far. that doesn't make him the messiah i'm afraid.
DavidRhys1988 3 years ago
I'm not hyping up Cipriani, he had a good game against Ireland last championship but needs to do a lot more than that to establish himself.
I'm not disputing the fact that innovative Welsh players in the 70's did a lot for the game, especially Gareth Edwards. Its when you start mentioning people like Cliff Morgan, it starts getting ridiculous.
russbantz 3 years ago
i didn't mention cliff morgan as far as i know, great player that he was! i can understand you thinking it ridiculous, he was from a long time ago.

merhtens was way better than spencer
jackblackandkyle 4 years ago
when? Merhts couldnt tackle, didnt have Spencers individual flair, speed and vision. Watch the tries spencer scores on Youtube and then post a link so we can all see Merhts equivalent... waiting... exactly!
maorifallah 3 years ago
But 1st five isnt about tries. Grant Fox scored one try but was a great 1st five. Spencer was a far better runner of the ball. I have said already on this that he should have been a no. 12. He would have carved up at 12 with the extra space and a big powerful 13 outside him. Mehrts was better at running a back line and directing play, which as I am sure you know, is what a 1st five is all about. I am NOT denying Spencers talent, and I am a Cantabrian bro!
goosoid 2 years ago 2
Disagree wholeheartedly - Merths was allowed "time and space" to do as you say by playing behind dominant Canty, Sader & AB's forward packs. The odd time when his forwards were matched or beaten (and I do say odd time) and his time and space taken he had little impact whereas Spencer was still a threat in those same situations. Sure when given so much front foot ball Merhts on par with Carlos but assess their effectiveness behind not so dominant packs at Saints and Quins when they retired north!
maorifallah 2 years ago
Hernandez, carter, o'gara, larkham, wilkinson, beauxis in that order.
rory198 4 years ago
youve named.Only Larkham could be considered a great amongst those you named. James Hook hasn't played nearly enough rugby to be even mentioned in the same breath as those other players.
My Top5 in no particular order are Ella , John, Porta Davies & Wilkinson.

1.- carlos spencer best first five ever
danielgatogm 4 years ago
carlos was a great player but not a great 1st five.
