This particular species is one of the loudest in the world. This is the Kuma-Semi or bear cicada...I enjoy their 'song', like a strange voice saying the word 'hiss' over and over again. This cicada is also a very large insect, far larger than any found here in the US. Really strange to hear live...kinda creepy.

I don't mind their sound that much in the morning. But the only place to smoke at work is under a tree full of them, and one flew into a wall right by my head and another landed on my arm...nearly shat myself and had a heart attack!

Softy, how audibly loud is is when they emerge like that? They sound deafening.

I don't know how they compare to the Japanese species, but in Hong Kong the cicadas roost up high in 50+ foot tall trees in the city parks and even that high they are almost deafening. I would say the cumulative noise could be over 100 decibels, maybe 110, although I can't say how load the individual insects are. It's a really evocative sound which seems to make a hot day seem even more sweltering, but I still prefer the melodic chorus of bird song we have in my native Britain during summer.

Oh GOD SO FU*KING ANNOYING!, I live in japan and they attack people >:( They go for the face and necks :D I like how some sound like a racing car swifting gears.... But soon they'll be dead or sleeping :D

@JerryLawMartin I agree. I also live in Kanagawa Prefecture, NAF Atsugi. I live in that one building near the playground in the forest. My room faces the forest where they're all at.

I was curious about tha cicada's noise. In japanese anime like "Neon Geneis Evagelion" and "Death Note" they use a very strange sound for that creature! I kinda like the sound they use. It does sound stranger than in Europe, but not that strange like in the animes... Cicada=summer and sea for me...

I live outside DC, and that sounds just like the 7 year cicadas, when that happens here.
