Absolutely agree with you,arkleno1. I have been looking through some old Raceform Flat Annuals and was surprised to learn that Persian War was trained on the flat by both Tom Masson and then Dick Hern. In fact he won two minor races for Hern.
I have always considered Persian War to be the best hurdler and it is pleasing to learn that Peter Easterby and John Francome-who were associated with Champion Hurdlers Night Nurse and Sea Pigeon- are firmly of the same opinion.

Saw him beaten in the 1970 Scottish Champion Hurdle but no doubt in decline by then. At his peak the best hurdler of all time by a long way.

Persian War's win here heralded the start of a Golden Age for hurdlers and this one was one of the greatest.

Yes, you are right Francilius, I also read this recently. No question that Persian War was one of the greatest.

Certainly among the finest - pity about his declining years, though (running at Stratford on the last Saturday of the season, would you believe).
