I've only recently found your excellent film when explaining about internment and the Arandora Star to my children. My grandfather, Emilio Calderan, did not survive the tragedy. My father was 10 days' old at the time and my grandfather never met his newborn son. Thanks for your thoughtful film.
This is truly a beautiful thing you have done. The loss of my grandfather Luigi Zazzi on the Arandora Star will probably haunt me forever. He was last seen with Giuseppe Capella (his friend and workmate) in the sea that night. This is the first I have learned that some bodies were recovered and buried. And yes, even 70 years after the fact, when wives and probably even children of the victims are now dead, it is still hugely comforting to know that some had been buried. Thank - you.
Thank you for making this documentary. My grandfather Guy Cibelli was one of the survivors. My late father Achille A.C. Cibelli told us about this, he said his father a barber/hairdresser told him the British soldiers shot holes in the life boats because they were classified as prisoners. My father was interned for 22 months, and spent 18 months in solitary confinement in a Scotland prison.
Thanks for making this. My italian great grandfather was lost at sea and a few years ago I discovered that he was on the Arandora star. Good to keep the sad memory alive of the dreadful things that happened to people in times of war.
Thanks for making this film, I knew somethings about the sinking of the ship but now I know a lot more thanks to your film.
I spend a lot of time at Malin Head and I dive on a few of the Shipwrecks and U-Boats that are sank there and there are a lot of Ocean going liners sunk there due to the two wars, most with loss of life, It would be a fitting memorial if someone or organisation would erect a memorial at Malin Head to all those who lost their lives of this shore.
