In fairness, although they committed many war crimes and atrocities, the Waffen SS are undoubtedly one of the best fighting forces the world has ever seen. Against incredible odds they remained loyal, disciplined and profissional until the very end. Mainly choosing death over surrendering. In fairness, although they committed many war crimes and atrocities, the Waffen SS are undoubtedly one of the best fighting forces the world has ever seen. Against incredible odds they remained loyal, disciplined and profissional until the very end. Mainly choosing death over surrendering. There is no way Germany would of achieved what they did in the war was it not for the SS. Had better tactics been used by Hitler they would of been on the winning side.

@Balexwogel - Well, He obviously did at some point. But he only declared war on the Americans because Japan decided to ruin everything by attacking the Americans at Pearl Harbour. So the United States was dragged into a war with the Japanese, but also the Germans because they had a standing alliance with the Japanese.

Since the factories on the other side of the Urals were rebuilt the Red Army crushed the combined fascist armies, not just the Wehrmacht. They didn't meet the SS in significant numbers until Germany and cowardly SS murderers had nowhere to run.
Even before the fascists were given a blood-letting. At Stalingrad Red Army was outnumbered about 5/1. At the Breast Fortress, the fascists thought they were facing 1000s but it turned out to be 10s....

The Waffen SS was an elite force, yes, but I would not call them the "worlds greatest". There are many others worthy of that particular distinction. Besides, their morals were somewhat suspect, but that's common in war

General Patton wanted to rehabilitate the SS in his captivity, and gave them covert support because he wanted to start a war with the USSR (Mongolian savages). This led to friction with Eisenhower who fired him.

Given the many wars won by the US Army I would have to say that they are the Greatest Army of Modern Times. The other one in history would be the Romans.
Not to say that the Russians are not a great fighting force. But they had poor leadership in Stalin just like Hitler with the German Army. The US not only had a great army but also top notch leadership and still do.

@fluffy1931 America's policy of militarily confronting the spread of Communism in the 3rd world was a folly because these countries weren't initially hostile to America as her policy was to assist countries gain independence from European colonial powers post WWII. However there's no use in denying the fact that Vietnam was a major war, and a defeat for the US whose objective was to stop the South from unifying with the North. Vietnam did not even register as a speedbump during the USSR slide into oblivion.

My Father was in the 17th Airborne (Thunder from Heaven) and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, Crossing of the Rhine, and the rush for the Rhur Valley..always told me that if Hitler listened to his Officers we'd be all speaking German. Also, that the Germans had good equipment, but in the end (American) Quantity overwhelmed Quality, which the Germans had.

What good was a strong army if you have a commander in chief who is a fantasizing egomaniac who would screw his own niece and murder a best friend for an edge politically? they were very successful, there are more than 10 million soviet soldiers that were slaughtered . Hitler's insanity and the huge red army, 14 million recruited just in 1942 made any victory in the eastern front impossible.
Huge red army had more than 2 million communist commissars inside it.
Stalin alone killed more than a million of soviet deserters/surrender/retreaters etc.wrote order 227 in 1942.

Russia did enter Berlin and their arrival forced Hitler into suicide but they did it with the US and England coming in from the west after having bombed the country relentlessly. The army was skilled and courageous to be sure but could do nothing in the long run with a leader like Hitler. There were many many many victims of Hitler's aggression including the German military forces , the German people and the country itself.
