I wouldn't say they are better. They are a modern 'reinvention.' America had really turned it's back on the Western at the time. I mean Jesus, by the mid-sixties, they had made hundreds of them.

Leone and Italian Westerns really revived the genre and continued modern day concepts, like the Anti-Hero (see 'The Searchers') Revolution and Unglamorous Stars like Lee Van Cleef, Clint Eastwood and Franco Nero.

Shit. A Fistfull of Dollars is a remake of Yojimbo. The Spaghettis were a new age.
