sorry but i disagree with this method..you said to cut the plug all the way around..you should only cut 3/4th of the plug..making a flap. if you cut it all the way around, the grass will die.
This method will kill the sod. Also, this method will make it so that people will no longer be able to metal detect in parks where this method is being used.
@throwingwrenches I use the same method and it does not kill the sod IF you dig deep and the ground is fairly moist. IF you are digging in dry times, then the sod may die if you dig shallow. The secret is to dig deep as you can which prevents root damage. I owned a lawn maintenance company when I was a kid and I know about grass. Ripping the roots is what kills grass more than anything so deep is the way to go. Sandy soil is also a problem as the clods of earth just fall apart.
It's a shame that so many UK "Detectorists" (AKA Night Hawks, Thieves, Poachers, the irresponsible, ignorant and just plain stupid) have adversely stigmatised the hobby to such a degree that detecting in public parks will result in the police turning up and stopping you from what you're doing. Even carrying a detector without any digging instruments is enough to land you in deep water, and I've thought of selling up so many times. Couldn't even detect the day before a motorway was being laid!
good job, thats the neatest hole i have ever seen a recovery made from! very nice forgiving ground mind, you wouldnt get far using that little digger on some of our ploughed fields over here in the UK ;)
Use your Pistol Probe before you dig out a monster plug. I cut plugs less than an inch in diameter using the pistol probe. It tells me exactly where the target is meaning a smaller plug.
I have been detecting for over 30 years and have found thousands of coins and have never cut a plug. For deep coins I cut a half circle plug with half hinged so the plug doesn't die in dry conditions. For shallow targets I use a metal or fiberglass probe to find my target, then i use a pair of duckbill pliers to make a hole the size of my finger. I then put my finger in the hole and with the probe I hold the coin against my finger and remove the coin. Then squeeze the ground together, no mess
Hey Twistidd, I do some probing and popping of shallow targets. Especially if I'm sure they are new coins. The new Garrett Propointer can do about the same on shallow targets.
That was an awesome instructional video on how to dig a plug! However, newbies should be aware of how to coin probe an extremely shallow coin, so that they don't have to dig those deeper plugs for a 1-2 inch deep coin.
I've been digging plugs and flaps square and at 90 degrees for 25 years. This cuts less roots too in addition to what you ave already said. I see these other people on youtube that are cutting shallow and funnel shaped plugs and we know these will die and just blow away. I have dug test plugs in my yard and know that the deeper the plug the better.
I won't detect a nice yard unless the soils moist. Even the best deep plug will turn brown in dry conditions.

What is the reason that you believe this. I only half agree with this video so I want to know where you are coming from.

Good tips. I think shallow plugs would come up easier though when a law mower goes over it. A lot of people don't think about that.

A FULL plug turns BROWN as the grass dies... I think a HALF moon plug is MUCH more effective in keeping the property NEAT and ALIVE....
