If you've played Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights you'll know what Dragon Age is. It doesn't get boring, but you might want to have some good music to listen to during the long dungeons.

It's a guided free roam world. Not unlike the method Baldur's Gate used, where you select the location you wish to travel to on a world map. it is NOT a sandbox world like Oblivion, so don't be expecting that.

based on biowares history i'd say no. i really like both but but bioware's game tamd to be more story drive as you progress through the story more areas open up but there isn't one large landmass usually it's multiple smaller map. bethseda (oblivion) is more free roaming you dont even have to play the storyline which good but i tend to like bioware's story telling better.

No the dragons are not on your side, the dragons in these games...((excluding the Old Gods who took the forms of dragons, and the Arch Demon...a corrupted old god that was corrupted and awakened by the Darkspawn, resulting in a new Blight)) are not capable of being allies as you put it, not unless you domesticated one or broke it, they are more of a force of nature, about as intelligent as a dolphin, and I think you'll only see the female dragons, known as the High Dragons, the ones with wings.

Uncannily similar, actually. The bad guys in the books are the Shadowspawn. The servants of the main bad guy, the Dark Lord, were originally powerful magic users that were corrupted. And the main character, so far, has been reuniting the fractured land to face the Dark Lord at the Final Battle.
