  • Nancy, here's an easy way to cook a potato as if it's a baked potato. Poke the potato with a fork all over, put it in a deep bowl of water, and microwave it for about two minutes. Done! :) Now just add butter or cheese, or if it's a sweet potato, add brown sugar. Yum!

  • Nancy, I found my potato starts two weeks ago and planted them. Will they grow in the wiinter if I put plastic over them and compost? Will they just mold? Can I over winter them?

  • @romancwriter2 I have no idea, but if they don't freeze, they may be okay. Put a foot of straw on them. Or two.

  • amen to that, Potatoe skin is very healthy!!! i love baked potatoes with all the delicious topings. your so fortunate to have a good free clean dump, we only have thrift stores here in hawaii and NOTHING IS FREE here, even at our dump, they want money outta ya if you want a clothes or 2nt hand appliances!! sad!!!

  • amen to that, Potatoe skin is very healthy!!! i love baked potatoes with all the delicious topings.

  • 88 Cents for 10lbs here (US Dollar).

  • @sc00b3rt Cheap!

  • Another cheap and nutritious meal is brown rice. You can make a lot of meals with brown rice.

  • @OneHappyBird123 For some reason, all my bones hurt if I eat rice. Strange, eh!

  • 2 dollars for 10 pounds here. potato is one of the most amazing food there is on earth.

  • I love raw potatoes

  • I will def love to get to know u! You and I seem to have much of the same ideas about saving money, crafty ideas, and food storage. I to am LDS, I joined the church when I was 17. Im 25 now married w/ 3 wonderful boys.

I dont live in Canada but in upstate NY, we seem to have some of the same weather as u. Example: Make sure the kids halloween costumes have enough room to put a snowsuit underneath & have an area inside for the easter egg hunt b/c the eggs might get lost under the snow lol.

  • Sometimes my local store will have a 25lb bag for $3 or $4. When they go on sale I grab a few bags & store them in my basement. They can last for 6 months or longer in a cool dark place.

BTW I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!!! Some days I will sit @ my computer all day & watch your videos Im ADDICTED! :)

  • @Rsemmel08 Yeaaahhhhh! What a fun person you must be! I'm so glad you're commenting now! Let's get to know each other!

  • You know what I want to learn to make? Potato Bread. I just adore it, and I haven't a clue how to make it. I make yeast bread already, so it shouldn't be hard to learn, but Im guessing its called Potato Bread for a reason, is there such a thing as Potato flour? I need to figure this out.

  • @Oreocremerocks I used to use water I'd boiled potatoes in for the liquid in the bread. It's got stretchy properties, is that gluten? Anyway, it may call for some potatoes, too. Or potato flour.

  • @NancyToday I found us a recipe, it won't fit in one reply, so there will be two, I am going to try to do them in the correct order here so everyone can try it at home. I am going to make my first batch tomorrow. :)

  • Yay it worked, looks like a proper recipe don't you think?

  • Add the flour a cup at a time and make a soft dough. Place dough on a floured board and knead it about 10 minutes. Dough should be smooth and elastic.

Let dough rise in a warm place until doubled, covered. Knead a few minutes and divide the dough into 2 loaves. Place dough in greased bread pans and let rise until double.

Bake at 400°F. for 20 minutes. Reduce oven to 300°F. and finish baking for another 25 minutes.

  • Boil potatoes until tender. Mash and add the cup of potato water to a large bowl.

Add yeast to a small bowl with 1 t. of the sugar and add the warm water.

Add the sugar, melted butter and salt to the mashed potatoes. Stir. When the potato water mixture is cool, mix in the yeast.

  • @NancyToday Potato Bread Recipe

    6 C. flour

    2 medium sized potatoes

    1 C. potato water

    1/2 C. butter

    3/4 C. sugar

2 eggs with milk to make 1 C. liquid

    2 t. salt

    2 packages yeast

    1/4 C. warm water

  • chili beans, or cheese, or broccoli, onions, bacon bits, yummmmmm a meal in itself...

  • Nice hat! And you're correct - potatoes are good food. I like to make French fries in bacon grease - makes it a lot tastier & adds natural saltiness!

    :)

  • @1400deadwood Real food! good for you!

  • take the potatoes you bought and plant them in your yard. One year i planted 10 yukon golds in the spring and by mid-summer i had a hundred. how's that for cheap?

  • @BallsDangleton if you PILE on the soil or mulch, you'll get potatoes growing all the way up the stem! My friend fills a forty gallon drum with one near the bottom and as it grows, adds soil till it's full. Then he gets a whole bag from one potato!! amazing.

  • HI Nancy, How do you feel about silver as a long-term store of wealth. Hope you have some. Can you do a video on how the selfish Baby Boomers should be planning for their grandkids and not spending money on RVs. Here's a nice book you might enjoy: The Fourth Turning. Predicted all the current mess. Cheerful regards. Love you videos.

Good video. I hope you have a recycle video. I would love that.
