As another poster suggested, I think this shark was pretty much doomed regardless of whether or not it was captured. It's clearly in very bad health at the start of the video - no healthy fish swims like that AFAIK. The change in pressure, temperature, salinity, etc. that the animal experienced when the currents brought it up from the abyss is likely what killed it. Ichthyologists do actually know what they're doing most of the time, and they don't just haphazardly kill rare specimens.

Pressure differences between the deep sea and the surface can be bad news. Not saying that's definitely what happened, but it seems likely.
