We have developed an app to help with skill acquisition and generalisation into real life which we base on the skills taught in DBT skills groups. Many find the app to be an effective tool to help train and makes the skills accessible 24/7 within reach. DBT Self-help app for Iphone.
For those of u who were offended by her humor, it may help u to know: 1) She is not laughing at her patients/clients, she's laughing at herself & the naive beliefs she had when she began her therapy practice. 2) The video was not made for the purpose of helping people feel bad about themselves, or to provide a visual sample of DBT therapy. It was made to teach therapists about DBT therapy. The therapist-audience is laughing because they recognize their own experiences in her tale.
The way she jokes about those suffering from this disorder is incredibly disturbing. Seriously, making light of those who think ending their lives is the only way to escape the mental torture they're in...wow...I'm just shocked. Shame on her. To those who have been helped by this woman, this is wonderful. I'm glad you have found relief. Her attitude in this video however is just off. It's not open mike night at the comedy club, you're talking about a horrific illness - have some compassion!
@coppermoth she has had her own deep struggle with her own mental health, I think she has the right to be a little sarcastic here and there, no one takes treatment more serious than she does!
Wow! reading these comments I hear a lot of negative judgments and that really shows how you (and everyone really) could really benefit from her class. I LOVE DBT and how it changed my life and it is thanks to this woman single handedly!
I just wish I could find DBT classes in Northern California. I have been looking into becoming a therapist just so I can learn more about DBT and share it with others here that also cannot get help here!
There are DBT and DBT-informed Mental Health Centers that exist and are available for poor and very low income persons. One I am familiar with is in Spokane, WA at Spokane Mental Health. DBT works!
Why was everyone laughing when she said she didn't have a problem finding the people no one else wanted to treat? Thanks for making me feel like shit.
Dr Linehan is truely one of the modern greats of Psychology. Its funny that the general public knows who S Freud, a poser and agressive self promoter, but do not know some one like Linehan who has created something that actually works.
So inappropriate the way she laughs about the patients as if they were below humans. Wow I would never want to be treated by such an arrogant horrible person. Lovely how she was so amused by her patients. This therapist should be ashamed.
You have no idea what you are talking about. this woman have been through as much as any one of her patients. She has singlehandedly put together a revolutionary and effective type of therapy for people who have never been helped or understood, people who have suffered through types of internal hell that 99 percent of the world couldn't imagine. And then, she brought this therapy into the public eye. So Angelica, calm the fuck down and think before you speak.
Don't give up hope! It is horrible that these treatments aren't readily available, keep looking for community mental health clinics, CBT/DBT/whatever their theoretical orientation, doesn't necessarily matter, the therapeutic relationship is KEY, the fact that youre looking online for answers means you still have hope, and there are therapists out there that are income-based! keep looking!

@ms125303 While I agree that the therapeutic relationship is key to recovery, DBT is the only evidence-based treatment for borderline personality disorder at the moment and so it does indeed matter what mode of treatment is used.
I have completed a local program called TIDES (Treating Individuals With Dis-regulated Emotional States) that is based on Marcha Linehans teaching. While it taught emotion regulation skills, it did not teach anything else. I have a bag full of coping skills and a mind that is so depressed that I battle self harm thoughts all the time. It is not enough to teach coping skills one needs to get the root of the problem taken care of. There is a reason I have Borderline! Don't just teach me to cope!
through this winter. i am begging for any assistance or sponsership or funding help to help me do this program. i will put 110percent into it and i know it will better my life and help me to get this book started that i have so desperately been wanting to write. either way could you please give me any referals that aren't dead ends, if you are unable to help me out yourselves. thanks for taking the time to read this. cheers and take care.
i have medicaid and medicare, but all the programs i'm finding on DBT are either too expensive like 30 thousand dollars for a 30 day inpatient stay, which is unbelievable. the other problem is most of them are outpatient and i am homeless. so where do i go from here and why do i keep calling and asking for help from all these DBT websites only to be told sorry we don't take insurance and they send me off and tell me good luck. well my luck is running out and i fear i may not make it
@treasurehiding9 I went to their website & saw their prices of books & films; if they really care about people they wouldn't charge $80.00 for a book ,65.00 a film ,she has everything locked down on the internet as if she works for the NSA or something. I wrote her a nasty email though calling her selfish in it just for the money. If I had a cure for cancer would I share or give to the highest bidder, I'd want to heal everyone & I hope I have friends to keep me level headed. I know how u feel
i know this program could save my life.i am 34 years old and been through every kind of treatment facility out there and this is the first one i am first of all excited about but second of all totally and absolutely ready for. now my biggest problem i am having is i am currently living out of my car and moving from house to house and hoping to avoid the winter months sleeping outside. beyond that i am jobless and have a Dr. that prescribes me Suboxone which has helped me tremendously.
I was lucky enough to get to work with Dr. Linehan for a whole year. She is so amazing. And..I'm cured! After 7 years of running around to treatment centers and doctors I found her and that was the beginning of the end of my problem. I love how fearless she is and how extremely caring and loving. One of her mantras is that "the patient is always doing their very best to get well" and just her holding me in that light made it possible for me to fully recover and never look back!
Do you mean there is actual hope of FEELING better- not just DOING better?? Are you saying there is treatment with a kind-of "cure" (at least with continued support) rather than something just on-going in order to keep treading water (life)?? If so, please, Please- get in touch with me. Thank you : )

It's hard work, but DBT really can help to some degree - and maybe to a great degree.
