It shouldn't shake left and right too much - I haven't found that. If you have a viewfinder, did you open it up before balancing? One other thing is that while you have one hand on the handle, you should have the other hand very loosely on the post - not supporting any weight, but keeping it from it's slow pendulum-like swinging and also prepared to pan or tilt as needed.
