I would argue that nuclear is the way to go. it is dirt cheap, and it provides more power than solar, but there is the problem with nuclear waste. Whatever the way of the future is, we must let the people decide it for themselves.
This isn't a matter of simple public works like roads and bridges. What you are taking about is an entire transformation of the economy directed from the center. Did the New Deal Work? Great Leap Forwad? Good job at making accusations and not answering the questions.
...Isn't volontary consumer choice better than using the coercive power of government? Even if you view the mission of government as good, aren't we giving it too much power? Isn't it a danger to give government too much power as it might do something YOU don't like. Perhaps the government forces everyone into an energy plan you disagree with, should you be forced into this against your will. Will you employ violence against people who don't want solar panels on their house?
Why can't people buy solar panels with their own money? Why does government need to do everything? People HATE the oil companies, but we buy their oil. They have no coercive power over us. If YOU are a believer in solar power, then invest some money in a solar power company. If solar power is better, then why don't people choose to buy it? Isn't FORCING people to use solar power a violation of individual rights? What if I don't want solar panels on my house?...
Proud to be NOT a progressive! I am a constitutionalist. Read our constitution. It's primary purpose is to protect the liberty of citizens by establishing LIMITS on what our government can do.
Solar is inefficient, but making progress. Wind is too intermittent. Biofuels have potential. Fuel-cells are very efficient, but getting hydrogen is still to inefficient. Simply stated nuclear power is the most efficient, but there is human error, and waste. The waste is small relative to the power out, but still is an issue. These CFL lights are full of nasty stuff and are not as efficient as the box claims because your home meter, unlike a factories power meter does not measure power factor.
It is not even close to practical to power a factory with PV panels that manufactures PV. Concentrated solar is making progress. A panel 2x5 will produce 100W (think of one light bulb) and cost around $500.00. Wind is excellent when the wind is blowing. More research should have been done, but a lot of progress has been made. I am against the alliances you mentioned. Realities of the issue suggest funding NREL. More R&D for LED lighting, conservation, and more incentives for private sector.
The Pickens plan is a start. In other words put large scale wind turbines where there is a good resource. Use natural gas for cars until there is a better solution. Iran is running automobiles on natural gas to sell more oil. I advocate renewable power, but most people don't understand the issues. We need to keep working on solutions to all these problems because there is an answer. Politicians like to start new stuff when we need to keep funding what we have. Check out NREL gov to learn more.
Where's the evidence that these things are related? I think you missed the point completely. At least you admitted Clinton was no better. You need to watch the 20/20 documentaries by John Stossel. In sum, this was a very poor video explanation, one of your worst.
The thing that annoys me is when rich liberals tell people to conserve (which we have been doing since we realized that oil was such a costly commodity). I live in the suburbs. To commute into Manhattan costs $400 a month by bus, even more by train. We have no choice but to use a car in the suburbs, it's the only way to go to a store or the bus stop to NY. We don't have subway system in suburban NJ. We can't hop on a train every time we have to go somewhere. The nearest store is 3 miles away.
There is nothing PROGRESSIVE about liberal/socialist ideas. Government will only screw things up. We need to unleash the free market. Not put solar panels on the white house to charge Obama's Ipod. I think you are more Libertarian than you have been led to believe.
Why is it always the same arguement, "government will screw things up" Thats why we vote and thats why we can change things.. if it screws up then we change it.. till we get it right.
There are some things in life that are worth trying to solve before a dollar can be made off of it.
You may think that's greed but it's capitalism that makes things work. Socialism doesn't work. Putting the government in charge will not fix it because time and again, like socialism, it fails. Government and it's regulation will only hold us back. All the great innovative things we enjoy today like your cell phone, pc, dvd and big screen tv were the product of profit motive. YOU REAPED THE REWARD ALSO by being enriched.
Joe, try googeing gdp vs energy consumption. The two are directly related. Developing nations NEED to burn as much energy as possible (see China and India). The working class depends on energy as much as any other class. Still not convinced? Why don't you check what the economy looked like in the Reagan administration.. Or see the economy in the Clinton (read: non-progressive) Administration.
The people that get elected have the most money, end of story. No one's vote counts. It is almost never the one people vote for or the best person. And btw, there is no energy crisis. Go watch some videos with Lindsey Williams and get educated. Also, Clinton was a POS as well, at least you realize that. Obama is no different. He will get his strings pulled as well.
USA oil production has dropped because idiots would rather drive your suv's and buy muslim oil than for us to drill our own. The bakken oil reserves has enough oil to supply the USA for more than 40 years giving us plenty of time to come up with alternate energy sources.

Jimmy Carter put on Solar Panels and as soon as Reagan got in the white house he took the panels off. That is awesome in my opinion. Carter was a weak president, the hostage crisis demonstrated that.
Actually they weren't solar panels that produce electricity. They were solar heaters that heated water for the staff mess (dining facility for you civilians). In 1986 the White House roof needed repair and the solar heaters were so worn out they were taken down and replaced by a state of the art indoor water heater that was cheaper to maintain. I believe the next major political movement is coming from the Constitutionalists / Sound Money people. It is going to be financially based and try to solve the money and credit problems of the US.
I like the Google approach. The company seems to be the progressive type but with an edge. Their solutions are engineer / mathematical solutions that have a basic purpose and are designed to work. Governments can provide solutions but they are created in a social / political environment so they are broad-based band-aid solutions. Google builds a geothermal plant and the US government makes ethanol fuel that causes food riots around the world.
Hi JOEY!! its me again JOEY!! how have you been JOEY? As a proud Democrat can you please get off the "Progressive" horseshit? We are LIBERALS and we should be proud to call ourselves LIBERALS. God Damn it, why the hell can't Democrats admit what we are? That pussy Obama is trying so hard to run to the right it makes me sick. WE ARE LIBERALS and we should be proud of it
People who have progressive ideas before they are practical anc economic to exploit are not really that special. I think your average smart person can identify potential problems very easily. Solutions can also be had if enough time and resources are spent on finding them. The criticism is progressives do not like messy problems. They also like solutions that benefit everyone. Progressive also do not hang around when their solutions go bad.
As a European I can only warn against expensive social programmes designed to ease the lot of the "disadvantaged". The price is high unemployment, stagnation, and crushing taxes. Rather than receive generous hand-outs I prefer to have a well-paying job. And I prefer to keep most of my income rather than have it stolen by the government and wasted on social programmes that encourage welfare dependence and moral decay. Read the writings of Theodore Dalrymple and start to think.
OK, since you were so gracious as to commend me for my arguments, I feel I should reciprocate by apologizing for my condescension. However, this apology comes with a caveat. All political opinions, providing they are honourable, are deserving of respect. Your PC mania does not fall within that category. My apology therefore applies only to the expression of your legitimate (although misguided) liberal opinions, and not to your inquisitorial PC ravings.
Jimmy Carter ruined the US economy. Now he is an antisemite and Islamofascist stooge. He naively thinks Hamas has suspended its raids into Israel because they desire peace and are ready to live side by side with the Israelis in peace and harmony. It doesn't take much brains to realize that the reason Hamas has not carried out terrorist attacks inside Israel is that the wall the Israelis built along the border prevents them.
This is a great video Joe, but energy/oil is much more complex and requires much more of your excellent analysis and commentary. It is a global issue that the United States cannot fix by itself, it will need international cooperation on a massive scale, intertwining issues of economies of all countries/regions and their foreign policies. This is no easy task.
thepolitical: getting electricity from solar energy has the same problems inherent in the development of any technology: it happens by fits and starts, people make discoveries, then there's a lull in innovation, etc. Solar can be an effective part of a multi-pronged approach. Nuclear is definitely NOT the way to go, as the long-term costs are too high.
I feel very strongly on this subject and would be very interested to hear your comments regarding Anne Korin's address to the YAF. Now, although she is a conservative and a republican, her proposals are strongly aligned with Obama's plan.
This is "need to know" info that ALL Americans should be aware before voting this fall. Please visit my channel for a link to the cspan archives to watch her in address in full.
That is a slippery slope you are going down Mr. Felice.... :) 1st there are solar panels on the roof... then your car... next thing you know the entire nation is overweight and has high cholesterol. Is that really the road you want to be going down???
you see you have too much hope in that the government will fix things
it wont, the people at the top are always going to be selfish assholes
we need a limited federal government so states can figure out what is best for them and that gives the people more power because it is easier to control what your state with democracy, but if washington has all the power they will just use it to fuck everybody over
If solar is used on a massive scale, the price will fall and the return will rise. The immediate advantage is the reduction in fossil fuel use. And if solar-thermal technology is more cost efficient, then we should use that too. France gets nearly 80% of its electricity from nuclear, but it ain't cheap. But France is much less dependent on fossil fuels. I think a comprehensive approach offers the best path to energy independence. We should include everything that is useful, clean and safe.
your description of good government has a fatal flaw mccain and obama are sadly the worst America has and your congress dem and republican are both incompetent and are all bought and paid for by special interests the republicans by oil and the dems by the environmentalists diff ends of the spectrum but both bad. you guys will never have energy freedom because of the interest groups that control either party wont budge from there positions solution is remove the dems and republicans from power
I admire your positions though I disagree. Oh yeah, Reagan was a horrible president! It's not like avoiding a nuclear holocaust or ending a war with the Soviets means ANYTHING in comparison to this energy "crisis". All we need is drill, conserve, and create alternatives, and we're set. John McCain will do just that. Obama will just let us suffer until we get an alternative. Go to Europe, see how expensive their gas is. We haven't seen anything yet, and we won't so long as we elect Mccain.
Did I? Well I apologize, I'm no novice to political disagreements, and that is an annoying thing to have done. However, you make a good point in this video with the energy crisis, however I would stay away from the partisan bashing. Keep up your videos, I enjoy analyzing them and arguing! :)
Joe, you got me man, that was stunningly good. I can't believe Reagan took the panels off. And wow, I think I might be a progressive too because I believe Government should be doing many of the things you outlined.
I read an interesting article in the International Herald Tribune the other day, where Walmart and other companies are looking into installing solar panels on the enormous rooftop real estate they own. They believe they can save up to 40% on their energy costs and eventually offer additional services to their customers, like providing electrical outlets in parking lots to recharge electric-powered cars. The more we use solar, the better the return will be. It's just a matter of doing it.
As a cranky old man I must say that nothing will be done for the people of the united states by ANY of our politicians until we start tossing them into zombie pits. You want honest politicians? Then toss a couple of them into a hole with the flesh eating undead. THEN we can have hard working politicians who aren't beholden to lobbyist. That is my crazy old man rant for the day. Thanks and take care.
Well said, Joe! When I was in Namibia last year, I saw many farms that employed solar power and wind power. These farmers lived independently and "off the grid." Namibia depends on South Africa for much of its electrical power and when South Africa has problems producing electricity, Namibia feels the pain. However, the farmers who produced their own power don't have to worry. Hummmm...? Energy independence, now that's "off the grid!"
People need to realise why Obama criticized Bill Clinton on having consevative tendencies despite being democrat. Since the civil rights movement quieted down, the progressive adjenda has had a difficult time finding its place the political realm. Unfortunatly, its dominance in the enterteinment culture is one of the major factors that distracts most americans in order to create the next great progressive movement.
I don't know if we have good solar technologies right now. The few people I know that have solar windows, have taken them down because they don't produce a lot of energy and yet there's a lot of maintenance. I will say nuclear looks great right now. It seems there are several progressives who are afraid of that word, but other countries are using it very sucessfuly. I would absolutely like to see this.
Our house just got a solar hot water heater and it is 100 times more efficient than the old one (that wasn't solar idk wat it was I'm only 14 :-/ ) but it would seem as though if the rest of the world was built with solar power (just based on my hot water heater observation) that we could have a utopia-like world before us.
so... i subscribed to you because of the "VOTE OBAMAAAAA" thing... so i figured your channel would be full of funny retarded humor... but you're very smart and your channel is informational and entertaining! I'm pleasantly surprised! keep up the awesome work!
I've worked in an oil related industry, producing certain materials that without which, no oil rig or refinery could function.
Time and time again the rumours I heard talked of driving the oil price through the roof to prompt the development alternative power, providing the market conditions need.
Cheap oil would mean escalated environmental damage - people would just burn more of it.
Yes! I'm so tired of people who think government is evil & can do no good - these are people who, knowingly or not, have swallowed Grover Norquist's koolaid. He's been explicit about his goals all along: getting people to hate govt so they don't mind seeing it slashed. Incompetence is all ok in their book, even if they're caught. One might argue especially if they're caught, 'cos it further convinces people of the uselessness & venality of govt.
im a conservative but i believe that it also means being conservative with resources and that being conservative shouldnt prevent us from taking steps to secure our future. people arent perfect and presidents sadly are people...the best we can do is vote our beliefes whatever they might be and work together to secure our future as a moral and free society.
Great video, Joe. Although I don't believe that there will ever be such a thing as a competant government, I do admire your enthusiasm. Maybe you should run for public office yourself.
I think that would be amazing if we got a president that would go that far, but I don't think we will be that lucky any time soon. Heck. I'd just be happy to get a president that tries to do half of what they promise in the election. I know a lot wouldn't get passed, but just the attempt would make me respect the president so much more.
Thank you Joe! If only more people would use youtube as a way of informing and educating the public as to whats going on today.....i forgot what i was going to say. :(
Now tell me again why you arent strapping on the suit and te and running for office? You have evrything that woulod make a great president. You make great speeches, you are open minded, and above all you understand the issues. Plus it still boggles me how you can do this entire video wiht just 2 cuts to switch scenes. Amazing.
I can't believe this speech is from 1977. Jimmy Carter definitely IS a progresive. It's a pitty that most politicians don't think this way. I just hope that this time the american people DO elect the best man. You and the world don't deserve leaders like the one you have in the office.
I always wondered if you called yourself a progressive or a liberal. I think that most politicians use the word progressive now, but I'm not sure why.
I can't wait until the dollar fails.

Back in '77 a progresive president took a look at energy managment and concluded America was F*ed.
Two Way unfolded:
1 Keep putting up with expensive oil use that increases exponantially beyond any capacity. It's limited and will always be.
2 Get your ass out of this industry and get some longterm thinking started.
By now America would have been THE leading country and the whole escalating dependency/oilprices would have been laughed at.

Hi JOEY!! its me again JOEY!! how have you been JOEY? As a proud Democrat can you please get off the "Progressive" horseshit? We are LIBERALS and we should be proud to call ourselves LIBERALS. God Damn it, why the hell can't Democrats admit what we are? That pussy Obama is trying so hard to run to the right it makes me sick. WE ARE LIBERALS and we should be proud of it
onerpone 3 years ago

Read the writings of Theodore Dalrymple and start to think.
manalone999 3 years ago
This was a great comment up to the "start to think" part. You're smart, and you'll persuade more people without the condescension.
JoeFelice 3 years ago

Nuclear is definitely NOT the way to go, as the long-term costs are too high.
nicholas9999 3 years ago
Show me a solar powered 18 wheeler and I will get behind your movement. I am a conservative, but I want oil independence too.
Give me a practical electric car and I will buy it.
MK10000b 3 years ago
I feel very strongly on this subject and would be very interested to hear your comments regarding Anne Korin's address to the YAF. Now, although she is a conservative and a republican, her proposals are strongly aligned with Obama's plan.
This is "need to know" info that ALL Americans should be aware before voting this fall. Please visit my channel for a link to the cspan archives to watch her in address in full.
God Bless America & Good Luck to all of us!

That is a slippery slope you are going down Mr. Felice.... :) 1st there are solar panels on the roof... then your car... next thing you know the entire nation is overweight and has high cholesterol. Is that really the road you want to be going down???
rbbstyle 3 years ago
Curses! Another slippery slope!
JoeFelice 3 years ago
you see you have too much hope in that the government will fix things
it wont, the people at the top are always going to be selfish assholes
we need a limited federal government so states can figure out what is best for them and that gives the people more power because it is easier to control what your state with democracy, but if washington has all the power they will just use it to fuck everybody over
anarcho-capitalism ftw!
mrgrieves9876 3 years ago
If solar is used on a massive scale, the price will fall and the return will rise. The immediate advantage is the reduction in fossil fuel use. And if solar-thermal technology is more cost efficient, then we should use that too. France gets nearly 80% of its electricity from nuclear, but it ain't cheap. But France is much less dependent on fossil fuels. I think a comprehensive approach offers the best path to energy independence. We should include everything that is useful, clean and safe.
nothankyoumam 3 years ago
your description of good government has a fatal flaw mccain and obama are sadly the worst America has and your congress dem and republican are both incompetent and are all bought and paid for by special interests the republicans by oil and the dems by the environmentalists diff ends of the spectrum but both bad. you guys will never have energy freedom because of the interest groups that control either party wont budge from there positions solution is remove the dems and republicans from power
cksteele 3 years ago
I admire your positions though I disagree. Oh yeah, Reagan was a horrible president! It's not like avoiding a nuclear holocaust or ending a war with the Soviets means ANYTHING in comparison to this energy "crisis". All we need is drill, conserve, and create alternatives, and we're set. John McCain will do just that. Obama will just let us suffer until we get an alternative. Go to Europe, see how expensive their gas is. We haven't seen anything yet, and we won't so long as we elect Mccain.

Thank you for the admiration but I think you invented my positions before you disagreed.
JoeFelice 3 years ago
Did I? Well I apologize, I'm no novice to political disagreements, and that is an annoying thing to have done. However, you make a good point in this video with the energy crisis, however I would stay away from the partisan bashing. Keep up your videos, I enjoy analyzing them and arguing! :)

Hey Joe,
As a cranky old man I must say that nothing will be done for the people of the united states by ANY of our politicians until we start tossing them into zombie pits.

Solar panels are much better now than they were then, and industry is using them (see link in sidebar).
As to Carter's decision to promote them in '77, I'm sure he knew the technology wasn't effective then, but that with public support it would improve.

Excellent vid, Joe. Five stars and favorited.

im a conservative but i believe that it also means being conservative with resources and that being conservative shouldnt prevent us from taking steps to secure our future. people arent perfect and presidents sadly are people...the best we can do is vote our beliefes whatever they might be and work together to secure our future as a moral and free society.

I think that would be amazing if we got a president that would go that far, but I don't think we will be that lucky any time soon. Heck. I'd just be happy to get a president that tries to do half of what they promise in the election. I know a lot wouldn't get passed, but just the attempt would make me respect the president so much more.

I can't believe this speech is from 1977. Jimmy Carter definitely IS a progresive. It's a pitty that most politicians don't think this way. I just hope that this time the american people DO elect the best man. You and the world don't deserve leaders like the one you have in the office.
