Many constantly point out her singing. Yes, it's far from perfect but despite all that, the whole studio album itself is really surprisingly good in all of its imperfection - most important, it's one of those albums made recently that I keep coming back to. To sing live is ungrateful challenge for anyone, and the way Scarlett sings her AOL sessions is fascinating exactly for her hard efforts to sustain a note. And actually, she does.

I think anybody singing Tom Waits' songs has to really think about the song, the lyrics, what they mean, and then deliver a performance that reveals themselves. That's what Waits does. But someone else is somebody else. They can't pretend to be Tom Waits, or just a general singer, like Johansson seems to be shooting for. "Who are you this time?" This is the question in every Waits song.
