squeal-gasm at 1:07!!!!! music to my ear hole!!!! great review man..gotta agree thought the jcm 800 takes the title!!!! thanks for the info man! what exactly are these #34 mods etc tho????
You by far have the most accurate AFD tone mods that I have heard so far, I have a '76 2203 MV that I would love to have you mod with both the #34 & #36 mods
Both are good amps...I'd recommend backing the Presence off a notch, both are just a bit too "Bright", not enough low mids. Between the 2, the JCM800 is definitely more convincing...the mids come through better. Of course all of that still isn't going to get the tone spot-on...3 important components missing: Saul Hudson, and the 2 PAF humbuckers that Derrig had in the guitar, that were present through the recording.
How does your X2U handle very high volumes? Do you get much clipping? Would I be able to run an SM57 through an X2U straight into my PC and get good performance at cranked volumes? I'm trying to find a good replacement for my Audiobuddy that doesn't like loud stuff. Thanks.
(continuation of previous post) his JCM 800 sound with 6550 tubes.. is this assessment correct in your opinion. Should I try to get a JCM 800 ?? that being said once i found one at a store and I tried it (with a les paul) and the crunch just wasn't there.....maybe I did not wait for the tubes to warm up...am I missing something... the sound of your JCM800 is very close to what I am referring to...its the live "use your illusion tone" that I like the most..
@rihnosaur The sound LIVE from 87-93 is from the Marshall Silver Jubilee. On the other side since 1991 his studio sound is mainly from a modded JCM800 with #34 mod. I have some other video with that mod too, check it out if you want. But if you really dig his live sound get a Silver Jubilee or his first Marshall signature from 1996 the SL 2555, that it's a copy of the Silver Jub. Cheers
@PuroMojo hey, im looking for the slash snakepit tone, i want to know which amp will sound closer to that particular tone, which one do i have to buy?, the jcm 800 the afd or ... what???
@rihnosaur I have a JCM800 from 86. Mine has lots of crunch. Tubes in mine are EL34s. You probably did something wrong when u tried it. Have the master at around 4 and the pre amp volume at around 6 - 10 if u want crunch. The tubes do not need to warm up...
you seem to be quite the expert on these amps great job in doing quite the research (and experiment) to differentiate these two beats. That being said, I am looking into buying an amp in the future. I am a huge slash fan, and have been considering the AFD, but after listening for many years, i came to the realization that the slash tone I would like to get is His "live era 87-93" sound which from what i can tell is NOT his appetite sound but his early 90's sound. I believe this corresponds to
overall i reckon that the AFD 100 has the most original studio sound as thats what they were trying to recreate when the made it, but the JCM has the true G'N'R tone when they played live as thats probably the model slash used
Both great amps no doubt about that. The AFD100 has a deeper and more crunchy sound which is definitely closer to the original Appetite For Destruction's. The JMC800 however is closer to the Ritz's sound, more metallic and juicy. I personally prefer the AFD but this is just my opinion
to me, the JCM800 sounds closer to the Guns N' Roses tone than the AFD100, but based on the sound of the video... I would like to test those 2 amps myself
I bought myself an AFD100 a year ago (when they just came out) and although it sounded good out of the box it did not have the raw sound of a plexi or jcm 800. The sound was a bit "processed" to my ears thats why I traded it for a 1959slp reissue, I added a Fulltone OCD for the punch and a Rivera rock crusher to get reasonable volumes. I know its expensive equipment but tone is just everything to me :)
it's called artificial or pinch harmonics, you perform this by plucking the string with your pick and thumb simultaneously more or less. just go ahead and try ;) for me they worked best on 5th and 7th fret when i started doing them..
All them ol" Marshalls are GREAT! but I dont use em anymore. I can get all them exact warm gritty sustaining biting crunch Marshall tones from my Rocktron Pirahna Preamp!. Just ask Tipton and Downing".. they"ll tell you all about It!
Both have great tone, but I think the AFD sounds just more polished, thicker and a little more like the tone on the album. Which is amazing after all, because the album has been mixed. Good job!
What a great video and great display of talent :] I cant make my mind up which sounds the best.. Maybe the JCM800's tone is a bit harsh???? Being a big slash fan id probably just go for the AFD100..
What kinds of mods did you have done to that 800? Extra 12ax7 slot? Sounds a bit "gainy" like a 900 to my ears. I'm not shitting on it or anything, it just sounds a lot different than my 4104 which is a 2204 circuit in a 2x12 combo.
The AFD sounds awesome, I wouldn't ditch my 800 but if I had the cash I might stack one right next to it!
how hard were the 3 mods to the 800? I have ZERO experience with mods and am not sure any local techs will touch that type of thing around here. thanks.
Very good video! I prefer the JCM800. 'Fatter' tone, to my ears. Traded my own AFD because I couldn't find the tone I wanted, it sounded to thin to me - especially in #34 mode.
One suggestion: I would recommend you not to put the JCM on top of your AFD because it damages the tolex (I noticed that on my own after I put my 2555SL on top).
Still impossible to get the AFD100 in the states. Found ONE on the internet on ebay for like $2,700. The fact that it's a "very limited edition" is a crime.
@mldew28 I have an afd100.. and sure it's great and all.. but i'm buying a jcm800 from somewhere between 81-86 now because the afd isn't good as a live amp.. i prefer the jcm series as gigging amps! take that to yourself as a tip from me ;) and i've recorded an album with the afd100 already.. i think i'm the first guitarist to do that, cause slash hasn't made a studio album with it yet :). he used a jcm800 on his solo album
@mldew28 Maybe you're interested in mine? I'm thinking about selling it.. But I live in sweden... Would you be able to pay the shipping and stuff like that?
the jcm 800 definately sounds more bassy with a lot more low end where as the afd100 has a crisper high end sound to it both there good afd tones though
On youtube listening to "Welcome to the Jungle - Slash only" you can hear that there is more distortion respect to the AFD 100, especially in the solo parts. I have an 100 AFD and also with the distorsion at maximum I don't reach that level.
PureM...Great ear for tone as always! I just got my AFD last week and am tweeking it. CAn you please provide your eq settings for a fellow AFD rocker? Great playing as always..Keep up the good work..... !!!!
PureM...Great ear for tone as always! I just got my AFD last week and am tweeking it. CAn you please provide your eq settings for a fellow AFD rocker? Great playing as always..Keep up the good work.....
To be fair, its not really a fair test since the AFD100 has a lot of other features. e.g. bias, attenuation. So of course it would sound better, but thats because it would be setup better. But to my ears i like the original 36 more because it has alot more agressive and roar sound to it. But my favourite tone, i've expressed many times is #34 i just can't beat that video of slash playing for the AFD100 project, makes me wanna kill everytime i hear it!
I think that JCM has much better tone for riffs and AFD for soloing. Overall I prefer the JCM has more raw than the AFD and has a fatter tone. Sounds more powerful too.
both very cool and you are a very good player, for my taste AFD is good to play a lot of things but i love the old GNR and the sound you get out from that modified JCM, i lovo it
Thanks for the video. I recently purchased the AFD100 and I just love the sound of it. I wondered what was the diference between the AFD and a JCM800 and here u show the diference.
What I noticed is that you use slight diference is the EQ as me. Normally my settings (on AFD100) are something like P 5,5 - B 6,5 - M 5 - T 4 and G 7. I put the Master Volume always on 7 and the Overall volume I play with the power atenuator. In your video I think the settings doesn't help the AFD100.
@AmnellAndreas not true - at the Ritz, they used rented gear: in the YouTube vids you can see a few good shots of the amp's front panel: more knobs than a 2203, hence it's the 2210 split channel (you can also tell by the higher gain capability of the 2210 over a 2203). Slash did use 2203's: the famous #34 amp with which the Illusions were recorded is a modified 2203. But live he is most famous for the 2555 Jubilees he used almost the entire GnR era.
@marktestroote I already know of all this info (except for that the ritz rented gear you said).. if you didn't know, i'm probably one of the biggest slash geeks ever xD
@AxeNewbie, as cool as your comment may sound the reality is that for pure AFD tones the AFD100 is the one, it has an unbeatable crunch to it. The 800 sound very fizzie
Both cool but AFD all the way!! JCM800 sounds very loose IMO. The clarity and tone coming out of that AFD is awesome!!! With both heads you are good to go for any style though.
Guys! The JCM is really old!!!!! You can't compare it to the afd which is made in 2011. They both have different parts. AFD is really good considering it is closest thing you can get at this point.
Both sound very cool. Perhaps the JCM800 is a bit too fuzzy, the AFD100 sounds more 'put together'?
Of course there are other differences to consider, right down to the EQ, but judging by this recording I'd say the AFD100 is the way to go. The JCM800 is still VERY cool though.
Cool.obviously the AFD sounds tons better for slashs tone

AFD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AFD!!! The best amp in ages!

I think that JCM has much better tone for riffs and AFD for soloing. Overall I prefer the JCM has more raw than the AFD and has a fatter tone. Sounds more powerful too.

W00t, that neck pickup in combination with the AFD 100 sounds so sweet :)

MasterKarlKani 11 months ago
both very cool and you are a very good player, for my taste AFD is good to play a lot of things but i love the old GNR and the sound you get out from that modified JCM, i lovo it

In your video I think the settings doesn't help the AFD100.

my impression is that the 800 50w has almost more volume and kick then the afd100 .... perhaps the PureMojo mod has not yet madeit to the letter

jcm800. the thing was the presence needed to be turned down a bit I think.

JCM800 has that Ritz sound. Fat and juicy.

@AxeNewbie Slash uses JCM800 2210's at the Ritz show!
marktestroote 10 months ago
@marktestroote 2203! he always used the 2203!
AmnellAndreas 9 months ago

@AxeNewbie But the Ritz was an Appetite concert and it was the appetite amp

Both cool but AFD all the way!! JCM800 sounds very loose IMO. The clarity and tone coming out of that AFD is awesome!!! With both heads you are good to go for any style though.
raosc70 11 months ago 2
Guys! The JCM is really old!!!!! You can't compare it to the afd which is made in 2011. They both have different parts. AFD is really good considering it is closest thing you can get at this point.

that jcm 800 blows the afd 100 away...sooo rich sounding... and you might want to listen to the beginning of nighttrain again....
gwanksta 11 months ago
Can you please post the settings for this?...it's almost perfect. it just needs the effects (reverb, delay etc..)
TheRuobi 11 months ago
afd 100 all the way that tone is fuckin sexy
D0nRidah 11 months ago
JCM all the way, AFD sounds bit unnatural to me or something. JCM sounds more juicy and realistic
cyteryt 11 months ago
Both sound very cool. Perhaps the JCM800 is a bit too fuzzy, the AFD100 sounds more 'put together'?
Of course there are other differences to consider, right down to the EQ, but judging by this recording I'd say the AFD100 is the way to go. The JCM800 is still VERY cool though.
