  • Incredible..... He is the blackest white man I've ever seen........ Bahahahaaaa!!!! I'm SOOOO shocked! :o

  • One of the all-time great R&B songs of all time .

  • Patrick Lamb on the Alto sax!

  • I have a thing for Bobby.....

  • My goodness real music!!!!!

  • This is GREAT !!! I also love "GO WEST" cover of this .

  • Is this the same Bobby Caldwell that played drums in the 70's with Johnny Winter, Captain Beyond ,and Armegeddon ?

  • @rhino7 nah it's a different bloke mate.

  • @rhino7 Nope. Although this Bobby also can play drums, guitar, keys, and bass. Bobby Caldwell of Captain Beyond fame is one of the most underrated rock drummers ever though.

  • this should be played at nigh tnot in the morning lol.. plus early morning? pshh

  • This has to be one of the BEST SONGS EVER!! Growing up, & listening to this song all the time, I really thought he was black until I saw these You Tube videos!! NO ONE will EVER pull this song off today...NO ONE!!!

  • he sounds kinda like Daryl (sp?) Hall here

  • i love bobby!-got a thing for you!

  • Does he give masterclasses? He's so awesome! I wonder if he has a website.

  • they reharmonized a lot of parts!!

    whata beautiful job!!

  • Alright....sexy soul brotha!

  • one of the best songs ever

  • Tupac version of this song is amazing.

  • The old boy can STILL sing! Go on :-)

  • Has anyone found a cleaner copy (audio) of this vid?

  • True class!

  • He wears three-pierce business suits when he performs?! Gee, Bobby sure takes his music seriously! *smile*

  • Does anyone have a cleaner copy of this performance? I know this version is somewhat performed on his Anthology album, but it pales in comparison to this performance. I would hope this performance is on iTunes or something. Incredible!

So much passion in this performance, especially the ending.

  • DAMN, brings back alot of memories!.........those newer chord changes are SICK!!!! i LOVE this guy!

  • Steeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeve, my friends wonder what is wrong with me.....well, i'm in a daze from your love, you see. I fucking love you baby. Your Priscilla xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox

  • @ Brynny211 he does sound like Bill Maher lol, I love this song!!!!!

  • true skill i wish i had a band like that

  • true skill

  • @hakuboshi1: I agree. Mad skills all day long. That's what you call a God given talent...excellent!

  • His voice is so KILLER. Amazing, even now.

  • Before I was born, people could sing man geez... I cant always relate to music having been born in 91 but still, songs in my moms gen had serious skill, and creativiy. Not to mention heart and emotion

  • nice as ending man

  • doesnt he sound lke bill maher

  • This version has more spicy than the one I am used to listening on the radio. Thank you Caldwell, one of my favorite songs.

  • man this version of what you wont do for love is bad ass!!! sweet arrangement!!!!

  • This man has so much soul. This song will never lose its power.

  • @joewhitaker32 never !!!!! i can tell you im a young fella but i played this the other night wit this girl i was wit n man it still running strong. got a thing 4 u hahahhaaa

  • Damn, he's killin' this sucka!!

  • WOW! I did'nt know this cat was white!!! My parents wore this song out!!!

  • @t9190kp alot of people didnt know lol.

  • I didn't know this guy was white

  • @DistortedV12 ME EITHER

  • Terrible hair piece..great voice. I happened upon Mr. Caldwell at the Desert Inn in the late 1990's -- he was doing Sinatra in the original "Rat Pack" tribute show, which has spawned millions of pale reflections.

  • I watched this when it was broadcasted. Still awesome....

  • Who is the sax man?

  • @dc2guy2 Patrick Lamb from Portland, Or.

  • As a pale-skinned soul music fan, I have to give props to Bobby for giving us credibility in the genre! He's the Larry Bird of r&b!

  • Bobby has a voice that is "unmatched" in the realm of R&B!

  • This is a great version. I hear a little Gino Vanelli in it which is fine with me. Anyone else hear that?

  • @gaspo218 haha Gino is my other favorite beside Bobby.... Great!

  • Did the remove his version of "Don't Ask My Neighbor?" It doesn't seem to be on Utube anymore. Does anyone know?

  • @sintheaa

    "Precious love" was removed too

    It was a excellent song

  • Sounds like What You Won't Do For Love meets A Saucerful of Secrets.

  • mlopezr28, this version is kinda sorta done on his "Anthology Pt.1" album. Honestly, the version in "anthology" a poor attempt compared to what is performed in this video. This version is more passionate 1000-fold. CBS should release this recording to Caldwell for release, at least on iTunes.

  • Does anyone know where I can find this version of What you Won't Do for Love?

  • I'm quiet amazed by the different chord progression in this version!

  • was that carter beuaford!!!?!?

  • Roberto Vally is a criminally underrated bass player. Even by me! I am discovering more and more of his playing and really like his style. He's not always involved with my favourite artists but his playing is always right there. And this song is just amazing.

  • What a great voice and great song!

  • Yike! Old tape, lots of static with bad sound and it STILL SMOKES!

  • So Soulful.....

  • A studio version of What You Won't Do...

can be found on Bobby Caldwell -

Anthology Part 1 - the changes in chords

and some melody lines are clearly

brought out in what BC calls the

Twentieth Anniversary edition of his classic composition.

  • gotta love that song!!

  • love this song and the addition of the alternate changes that have been added

    lindmill88

  • Maestro Bobby Caldwell

  • not the drummer from the 70's, one is Caldwell, the other is Calwell

  • Love, Love, LOVE BC!! This is such a great song, and I love how he changes it up for this live performance--keeps it fresh and interesting.

  • Does anyone know where to get a better version of this video. Bobby should release the audio of this version. The passion just explodes through this performance

  • AWSOME!!!! I met Pepper this weekend! I can say "I KNOW HER!!!"

  • Me too! That's like when I heard "Look What You've Done To Me" by Boz Scaggs. Whether he's black or white, this song is a classic. Love it!

  • Classic.......

  • soul,soul//////////soul!

  • I understand it's because at that time Caldwells label never put his image on the cover. Guess they were concerned about crossover audience then. Everyone thought he was AA. I LOVE this song but no one sings it like BC.

  • Kool G Rap also sampled this song.

  • Tupac- Do for love

  • This number and Jamaica are my two favorite hits of his. Liked his music back in the early 80's. GREAT musician and excellent vocals. Definitly among the worlds best talent.

  • blue-eyed soul!

  • actually I dont know much about the manner and behaviour of musicians. what i do is just listen and enjoy and study their music pieces. He can be nice, he can be bad, he can be arrogant but to my role as a listener i would and I can only be able to do is to listen to their music.

  • I love his suit and how the band is dressed in all black. He talks differently than he sings. Great voice. He is so smooth, I think I want him for my baby daddy. Yup!

  • absolutely one of the very best songs ever... . amazing that composer/performers can possibly have so little clue of what will be a hit... the studio version will never be surpassed.. about as perfect a studio piece as possible

  • @Jantelover perfect comment...........lol

  • One Tuesday night in the late 80's I was washing dishes at Blues Alley in DC when Bobby Caldwell was playing. I was taking a quick break in the men's room, making short work of the 8-ball I'd bought, when this clown Caldwell storms in. He insists on snorting from my end of the streaw (which I'm not crazy about) then proceeds to drop the entire bag into the toilet. "Whoops", this faggot says. BC, you owe me!

  • shit happens?

  • Yeah (sigh...)

  • LMAO! THAT'S WHAT YOU GET DRUGGIE!

  • LMAO

  • absolutely love it!!!! and im hard to please,,,,,,,,,,go head white boy play that funky music,,,,lol

  • This song never grows old. What a great composition. The original song has a great instrumental ending.

  • a soulful white man

  • yeah, baby :)

  • Comment removed

  • Cant believe Ive never heard of him. Its a classic song and if 2pac sampled him then that has to say something.

Bobby needs to get his business hat on and do an up to date remix.

    Absolutely classic beautiful song!!

  • how old are ya, he's been around, of course without a select few, i understand that you don't have anything to listen to such as this....

  • He has incredible stage presence, doesn't he? He's the type that makes every in the room feel that they've known him personally for years. A great voice that one never gets tired of. I like the way his backing vocalist (Jeannie?), moves. She's enjoying what she does. This particular song will probably always be the Bobby Caldwell composition we remember most.

  • This is a great song. Bobby is a really talented singer, but it's a shame that he never really gets the accolades, for so many other incredible songs he's done, and that a lot of people -- only know him for "this song".

Everything from "Rain", "Next Time I Fall In Love", "Promise", and even his rendition of "Let It Be Me", are fabulous. And there's a lot more than that, from Bobby. I can't think of all of them! :)

His 30 year career has a lot great material. Truly, an underrated artist.

  • OMG I had no idea and I LOVE HIS VOICE BY FAR ONE OF MY FAV SONGS EVER SINCE I HEARD IT ON THE SHOW NEW YORK UNDERCOVER

  • he wrote this song and yes hes white, hes irish, there are many great irish soul singers, like michael mcdonald, bolton etc

  • i found out recently he was white and it neva made me love the song any less this song will FOREVA be a CLASSIC

  • What the hell? He's white!?

  • This record will never die!

  • bad ass you go man awsome

  • What'a cool new music Arangement of this song

  • wow after all this time he still got his voce a true singer

  • i love how he goes from nerdy and gay to black and soulful in .2 seconds

  • Too funny but i just found out he was white.

  • If you've ever met Bobby Caldwell, it's also amazing how he goes from major dickhead to great and soulful in a matter of seconds when he starts singing. I met him a few years back in Providence and he was an asshole.

  • why is he a asshole? Just curious to know

  • He was just a very arrogant man. I met him backstage in Providence at a Salute to Soul concert back in 1998 or 1999. He was one of the performers and he did this song. He thought that he was the show. There were about 20 other performers there who did one song and that was it and he just basically strutted around like he was better than everybody else. He was critical of other performers. Why couldn't he just keep his mouth shut and collect his pay?

  • Fair enough

  • No problem. I used to play the saxophone. I was part of the gang of musicians that took part in this show. I got to play with Billy Vera, whose big hit was At This Moment. I also played with Gregory Abbott, whose big hit was Shake You Down. They were on the same bill. Caldwell was bitching that he should have got to go on after James Ingram, who has a lot more songs than he does. He was just rude and arrogant. He's a good singer but he's an asshole if yo ask me.

  • daddymak9: While I do respect your right to your own opinion, and I cannot speak for Bobby personally, I really do feel that you should also hear from someone (like myself) who has seen Bobby, many different times.

I've seen him at award shows, quite a few concerts, and at meet & greets (photo ops too); I can honestly say, that he's always been an incredible gentleman.

I'm sorry you didn't get to see that. Bobby's zany sense of humor and witty comebacks, are also fond memories of him.

  • Like I said, that was my impression of him from the one time that I met him. I just got sick of listening to him whine about his placement in a show where almost everybody there played one song and that was it. He's a good singer, no doubt about it. But he thinks that he is the bar that other singers should set. He was proclaiming to be better than Jeffrey Osborne when he was on stage, as well as James Ingram, who was the headline act. He was just full of himself.

  • Thank you for your quick reply. Jeffrey Osborne and James Ingram are, indeed, talented singers as well, so I empathize -- that you, as a musician -- in that situation -- may have felt "unimpressed" .

But, I also remember seeing Bobby after a kick-butt concert (a night before he & the band were leaving for Japan the next a.m.). I even said to him "Bobby, we know you don't have much time..." And, his immediate warm response was something like... "Oh I've always got time for my you, my fans."

  • give it up daddymak9 you look foolish trying to explain your slander you do know what slander means right? por favor.

  • Boy you must really hate Bobby. now tell me the truth now. what did he do to you?and as far as sucking his dick no I am not gay like you so I dont that, I just like his music ok? uhhmm maybe that is the hot button did you try to suck his dick? and he refused? LMAO you pathetic little faggot

  • Who the hell do you think you're bullshitting? You and he were shower buddies. He's an asshole. I've met him, you haven't. He thinks he's the greatest thing to ever stand behind a microphone. He's good, that's it.

  • I wish you good luck daddymak9 !!I dont have time for this stupid game any more.

Believe what you want. if that truly makes you happy.go for it man! I need to employ my time in more productive ways. in the end you will still believe he is an asshole and I will still like his music. so we have accomplished nothing. peace jlove7723

  • Yes, I've met him several times, and I have had a completely different experience. Please see my comments down below. Thank-you.

  • And almost 30 yrs later he can sing it in the same key...dammmnnn....

  • original version was better, but i cant seem to find that one anywhere!

  • Bobby Caldwell wrote this song.

  • CLASSIC !

  • I wish there was a cleaner version of this. The quality is about the same on Bobby's site- shame. All the covers of this classic can never be compared to the original, or even this version. Simply genius on how he made such a great song even greater. The ending is overwhelming- full of passion and artistry. If anyone knows of a cleaner version, please let me know. definitely worth putting on my iPod.

  • It seems like I'm not the only one that thought Bobby Caldwell was a black guy....incredible how this white guy could come up with those amazing soulful tunes. Then, music is not about races...its well beyond what we can simply understand.

  • A lot of people thought he was black and this song is a R&B classic in the black community!

  • "Shivers Down My Spine", Simply Amazing Version!

  • 2005

  • Thanks a lot.

  • Anyone know what year this video is from please?

  • Get it Bobby!!!

  • This boy is the tops

  • HE'S WHITE!!!????? I've been listening this song for years and I never knew! lol He can sing though......W.O.W!!! *scatches noggin*

  • rohandon: you crack me up! Yeah, he does sound pretty damn good for a white guy!

  • Heckzzz yeah! and he said "Dog-gone"....classic lol

  • Yeah, I didnt know he was white either til my dad told me a couple years ago. Isn't that a trip?!

  • to rohandon79-thats why his debut album years back in the 70's was him sitting on bench in a silhouette. i was shocked when i first saw him as well.

  • he's been playing this track for over 30 years..if you played the same song for 30 years you'd be tired of the original also,i like both versions..when i seen him live last year on new years eve, he played this version,if you see him live he's gonna play it like this, which is fine,it's the man and the voice your going to hear, theres not many cats out there that can still blow the doors off like him, he is EXTREMELY underrated both as a songwriter and performer he should be a superstar!!!!!!!!!!!

  • C'mon dddddddddday, lp4311 is absolutely right on the musical side. My point however is this track has kept Bobby in work for over 25 years and we should be glad for him. Your negative comment I'm sure wasn't personal but it would have been best to have left it in your heart. I'm sure you're better than that.

  • the original's still king, but the updated arrangement is good too. good to see his voice is still on point after all these years

  • It has the same melody, same lyrics, just updated chords by the COMPOSER. If you don't like it, write your own million selling hit. By the way dddddddddday, you're a moron!

  • You guys are hilarious! I didn't care for the arrangement and expressed my displeasure for it. That's what you do on public message boards. I don't need to write a million selling hit or be a unhappy passive aggressive person to express my opinion. Some things you love and express with joy and some things you don't and express it the opposite way. Love the hypocrisy though. It's not ok for me to express my displeasure with this arrangement, but it sure is ok for all of you to take shots at me!

  • Great updated arrangement. I still prefer the bluesy original. What the hell -- it's his song.

  • It took me forever to find out who sings this song. I was in Food Lion in Wayrcross, GA and it was playing. I was asking everyone in there did they know who sings it. I finally found out when I had digital radio through my cable. Thank you Bobby for an awesome, awesome song.

  • i think the term 'cool' is corny and over used, but this dudes lyrics are 'cool'... theres nothing else to say...

  • shut up

  • very polite sir.

  • Brilliant song, and deceptively simple sounding - there are some fantastic chord changes going on in there.

  • I guess a lot of people share my love for this song. I can't put my finger on it, but there is something magical about it. I covered this as a musician and it's an amazing feeling to play this song.

  • Bobby's an AMAZING singer. I've been a fan since i was a kid in the 70's. Tis song brings back so many memories, takes me way back!

  • what year was this.....

  • December '06

  • I had no idea he was white lol

  • i agree

  • good stuff. that bassist was really into it lol

  • Divino Bobby, una classe senza tempo e una voce che entusiasma ancora oggi!

  • Grande Bobby...

    sei il mio mito.

  • I've been a fan of Bobby's since the beginning. Listening to this performance, Bobby's voice seem to gotten much deeper over the years. I wonder if he is (or was) a smoker.

I love his live performances on YouTube. Too bad "Cry" was just removed.
