  • This boook rooooooookkksss

  • This book is a must have even for flash users...If you dont have it, get it.

  • I just made a 3 min Hand drawn animation, needed 705 drawings by Learning frame by frame images drawn in the animator's survival kit. I've read the book back to front, sorta.

  • @roseaid15

send me the script for the pilot and we'll talk

  • I need this book. I can from Chile, Southamerica. I am an comedy actor but my eternal hobby is draw caricatures, and i learning now how to animated, something techniques. Well, i think can buy this book in Argentina. Sorry for my engish. Me no have spanenglish, i have tarzanenglish, gracias de todos modos.

  • @iluvme4never and still, this is crap compared to neon gen. Anyone with good taste in animation would know that. Animation is not just about showing off cute little tricks and making your characters walk around in cool ways, it's about substance.

  • @paperfeathers

you are a moron, and obviously not an animator.

  • @iluvme4never Alright, if that doesn't satisfy you....check out anything by masaaki yuasa, koji yamamoto, satoshi kon, kunio kato, tatsuyuki tanaka etc...you dunce.

  • 5 people cant draw

  • who dared calling richard williams amateurish???!!! WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO????!!!?!

  • rotoscopic, ralph bachsi is the master of it!

    ever seen fire and ice?

  • 5 people can't walk the walk.

  • booooobs O.o

  • 0:32 love the tits.

  • this was amazing...

  • I just got this book today, but I'm kinda regretting it. Finals are coming up here, and I don't think I'll be able to concentrate on studying for them...

  • hÊy_Î_fÈèl_só_løÑélÿ_tõdÁý

  • Incredible JOB, such a great animation.

  • Add some audio. :)

  • Wow.....My book is in shipment right now. I just can't wait!

This is literally the best walkcycle video HANDS DOWN.

  • WHO THE FUCK DISLIKED THIS?!!!

  • @VoidRevenant I'm pretty sure a frustrated animator who works in a boring office.

  • what program you use to capture animation

  • Even in the age of CGI, there's nothing to beat the old-style flowing animation drawings... they're magic!

  • A certain quote comes to mind when I see this...

"I can do that but I don't wanna..."

  • The book is every animator's Should-be-Bible. I've researched dozens of books on the subject and this one ranks top.

  • A master craftsperson.

  • love it

  • Incredible. I animate only enough to get my ideas across. I envy not having this much skill and dedication.

  • Question for anyone that can answer this: I don't really know much about animation, so beginner question--what is the count running at the top that stops at 2723?? Would that be the number of frames? Because if so, that is just amazing.

  • @rockab3ll yup, that would be the frame numbers

just think, 24 frames per second of animation, multiply that by how many minuets are in a feature-length movie (average 1.5 hours) comes out to 129600 individual frames, yes, i think your mind has just been blown ; )

  • @rockab3ll

yes it is. It took him a little over a year to do this. crazy huh?

  • awesome

  • 0:43

    :D

  • that was pretty impressive...I particularly liked the dog...amazing..

  • The Book is incredible, useful and totally inspiring, I recommend to any person with an interest in animation

  • @stedav totally agree. im using it to study animation in my foundation course

  • must be the best learning tool E-V-E-R !

  • Genius!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • show off

  • AMAZING!!! O_O

    Beautiful animation!!!

  • Great study! Thanks - I needed that!

  • line tests allways look so much better than the finished cells

  • In the video that follows he says it took 9 months to produce!

  • is anybody here majoring in computer animation?

  • Ohhh, I wish I KNEW! I would have SO MANY questions....!!!

  • Astonishing.

I had only till now seen a still of this on his book's cover.

  • the book was made before he ever intended to animate this...he talks about it on the DVD, & like the guy above mentions; it took 9 months!!

  • AWE-SOME

  • Very good!!!

  • a wonderful sequence! I love the rough look of it! richard williams is a brilliant animator, and his book, "the animator's survival kit" ought to be called the animators bible as well! It's packed full of wonderful, and useful, and humorous information! The drawings are wonderful, and it has walk cycles galore! it improves greatly on the classic preston blair animation book! I highly recommend it for animators, or people who love animation! It cost me about $40. It was well worth it!

  • Stop dissing computer animation. I know that traditional is important and I respect that medium very much but 3D is just another tool of the trade. Why are you people dissing it so much? IMHO it is not easy to create 3D animation. But seriously now. It's quite obvious that you people are limited on the kinds of animation that you watch. 3D is much more versatile than 2D. More practical too. Just respect people. These are just mediums. What it becomes is up to you.

  • Epically well said.

  • I guess they're like me. line drawn animation just seems to flow better. CG animation tends to look stiff. I've seen all kinds of bad cg animation. mainly in commercials. it seems only quality CG animation shows up in pixar, or dreamworks features anymore.

  • i need to get this book

  • u "have" too ... it's the best book ever!

  • I have this book! It's cool! It's big! thick like a city phone book, and crammed full of good information! you won't regret getting it!

  • FUCKIN' IMPRESSIVE !i've bought the animation survival kit book. I didn't know there's an animation of the book cover, this is great !

  • where can you get this?

like what kind of stores sell animation kits?

  • I bought it from a friend. I live in Australia, and i think my friend bought it from this book shop called 'Borders'. not sure though. the book cost AUS$50, very good for animators.

  • It's not an actual kit, it's a book for beginner animation students. It's sold in any major retail book store. Google it to compare prices online.

  • I've always thought the title feels a bit awkward. I think it should be called "The Animator's Survival Guide," but whatever.

  • 0_o waooo

  • Richard Williams is the greatest animator still alive today. He is my idol!!!! the best way of animation is the traditional old fashioned way. 4get about computers, they make everything look the same. This way you can see a unique style!!!!!!!!!etc...

  • Word.

  • You are a completely ignorant loser to shun an entire MEDIUM of animation. What's more depression is that your closed-minded comment is rated so high. Lots of idiots out there.

And um...hello... there are 2 CG characters IN THE LOGO.

  • Sorry, I meant to say depressing.

  • lol, ok. who r the most famous names in animation history...frank thomas, ollie johnston, milt kahl, rod scribner, bob mckimson...and much more. and what did they use, pencil and paper. im not dissing computer animation, but everythin in cartoons now adays looks exactly the same, there's no unique look to the computer. whereas every person in the world has their own unique style of drawing. i didnt mean 2 offend u. wot style of animation r u in2 then?

  • You've made a very common mistake in blaming the medium for what the PEOPLE have done in it, or lack therof. Just because almost all the mainstream Hollywood studios rip off Pixar's signature look doesn't mean that computer animation is incapable of producing more original, personal styles.

Adversely, having a paper and pencil doesn't guarantee that you will magically produce anything worth crap. Those men had TALENT, and the tools they used had little to nothing to do with it.

  • milt kahl is most famous for his fine draughtmanship, which is all about drawing, i agree they did have extraudinary talent and a lot of that wasnt to do with the equipment used and more to do with the performance given. but i would like to see some computer animation that looks different from pixar, dreamworks and every other company, if u show me something i like then i will give in and stop being so stubborn, lol ;-D

  • Richard Williams did mention in the book that most computer animators he's met are also good draughtsmen as well.

Okay, here's a clip from the early 90's "Beyond the Mind's Eye", back when people were still creative. It's my favorite segment of the video.

    watch?v=oFigaYyvrI0

Feel free to check out related clips from it, it really is well made and artistically free and abstract, even for its very early graphics.

  • This is jaw-droppingly cool. Williams animated this? It's so smooth and beautiful!

    ~Sarah

  • WOAH I thought it was YOU who animated it..lmao..nvm.

  • Hard ass book to follow, good job.

I think I've had the book for close to a year by now-but I'm still not positive as to HOW to practice it. I don't have an animation lighttable...yet. Previously, I just mimicked his examples (and did learn stuff)-but still feel like I'm missing a lot.

  • that was awesome!

  • amazing! best book ever, i use it all the time

  • This is So Rad.. a classmate of mine was watching this in class.. and I couldn't help but remember fundamentals of 2d animation.. THis book also Rocks my socks off!.. Thanks for posting.. This is goin on my Favs. fo'sho

  • waw waw waw...

    climax of mastering animation

i can only dream to ever be as good at it

  • i have this book, its a beast! has anyone else seen the picture of charlie chaplin's silohette filled with loads of different characters inside it?? i really want it as a poster

  • actually if anything I'd say that thier would be lesss animation in anime than thier is in theese cartooons because in animes the characters are usually very detailed making them hard to animate so the animators use shortcuts so there :P

  • Also, Anime animators would normally work on full scenes, including the effects, while in american animation, they have an effects crew.

  • thats sikkness unleashed XD

  • Very nice work. Wow. Great artist, too. Good movement capturing. And WesleyRiot, I'd love to see your work, based on your comment. Guessing you're also an animator?

  • Great! just great!

  • Great

  • MAN this was cool!! sooo many characters and all with unique personalities! hats off to richard willaims!!!!!

  • Holy cow! His fingers must have been hurting afterwards. Animating in 2D is next to torture.

  • Amazing work! Williams is truly a genius...it would be great to see him work on more projects.

  • WOW! that amazing animation!

  • do you want to see some truly amazing animation. Search youtube for neon genesis evangelion episode 26. There is one animation segment that will expand your mind.

  • no thanks, i have seen that before, i have seen way better than that, i still prefer this video than neon genesis thing.

  • yeah i also see it like that, nge has very personal great expression, but that is no masteranimation like this stuff here!

gainax is but a clear must see in animation i would say!

FlCl, so much playig and doddling around, is great!

  • thank you for reminding me of all that great names, got some nice youtubing behind me searching for those guys.

But i wouldnt call this clip here amateurish, though its just a test you can see some pretty nice things going on... different styles of animation.

  • the "true" animator is hard to find still, i like to think that such an "true animator" keeps on working with handdrawings and very less computerbackup. That is what i adore at mr. Miyazakis work, when i heard right he keeps it that way with "ponyo".

    Got some more recommendations?

    Ever watched "gertie the dinosaur"?

  • I wouldn't call it amateurish having heard Richard Williams speak, seen tons of his work,& knowing who his mentors were,he deserves exclusion from the terrible pack out there & at least some admiration for remaining true to 2D as an art form.I agree Japanese animation is amazing and obeys a different 'physics' from that of the West.I've seen good stuff from both ends. Those legends u mentioned are great but true animators are everywhere if u look.Sorry if I came out blunt, animation is my life.

  • What the hell are you talking about?

  • amateurish? idiot, this is an animated replica of the book cover, this is what it looks like!

  • You calling Richard Williams amateurish is like calling Bruce Lee a pussy. You made a fool of yourself for everyone to see.

  • Look dude, that you prefer japanese animation doesn't give you the right to scorn all the western animation geniuses. I too like Studio 4ºC, Miyazaki, etc. I'm not saying they suck. Quality is everywhere.

  • Hey retard, they use about 2 frames a second and repeat the same frames OVER AND OVER for anime, while western animators used to hand-animate 24 frames per second, and beautifully, with hand drawn backgrounds. If you can't appreciate the art and time that went into it, well, then you're a lost cause. I hope you don't breed.

  • It's not that I want to make you upset or something , but anime use 8frames a second , not 2. Both are beautiful in my opinion.

  • @futarinokizuna 8 frames a second is a bit slow. Even most tv shows do 24 fps, though they animate in 2s a lot.

  • @paperfeathers I just watched the episode you were talking about. The lip syncing was bad, the character design was generic, just like nearly all Japanese animations I've seen, and the animation was next to nonexistent except for one scene in the opening. Miyazaki is still the only japanese animator that has produced anything that was had nearly as much of an effect on me as classic Disney movies. I honestly can't believe that you tried to pass off that crap as better than this.

  • @likizsna Cool story bro.

  • That was the best thing I've seen!!!

  • Gorgeous trailer! I love the curvaceous woman at 0:36.

  • Yes...remember that this is the guy who animated Jessica Rabbit (or at least was extremely influential to how she was animated)

  • me too! i love how she enters!

  • Beautiful!

  • 2723 frames.

  • did Richard williams do this segment? please someone tell me who did this

  • Who else but Williams would have ?

  • Yes Richard Williams did this as part of the DVD series he's been working on publishing for a number of years.

  • Thank you for the info. Even though i assumed it to be his work, had to make sure. I mean, it coulda been done by a team of 30 professional animators..or "one" Richard Williams :)

  • Especially the way animators are today..and I know cause I'm working on two feature films right now.

  • Well feature films are a little different just cuz they expect like 5-8 seconds a week or something right? I'm a Game animator. Studios though...depending on things, they could ask 1 second an hour just cuz you care more about functionality then animation (with polish pass later though)

  • in game animation is going downhill fast in this industry today. I've worked tv, video games, and film. Theres to many people qho think they can animate but have no clue what makes it good. it takes a lot of time studying why one animation is nicer then another. it's like learning a martial art your whole life. not just a couple tricks you learn quick in school.

  • not to mention the over reliance in motion capture. fucking motion crapture.

  • Brilliant! This guy is a genius!

  • cool

  • Interesting. Everything feels a bit weightless, though.
