I just made a 3 min Hand drawn animation, needed 705 drawings by Learning frame by frame images drawn in the animator's survival kit. I've read the book back to front, sorta.
I need this book. I can from Chile, Southamerica. I am an comedy actor but my eternal hobby is draw caricatures, and i learning now how to animated, something techniques. Well, i think can buy this book in Argentina. Sorry for my engish. Me no have spanenglish, i have tarzanenglish, gracias de todos modos.
@iluvme4never and still, this is crap compared to neon gen. Anyone with good taste in animation would know that. Animation is not just about showing off cute little tricks and making your characters walk around in cool ways, it's about substance.
I just got this book today, but I'm kinda regretting it. Finals are coming up here, and I don't think I'll be able to concentrate on studying for them...
Question for anyone that can answer this: I don't really know much about animation, so beginner question--what is the count running at the top that stops at 2723?? Would that be the number of frames? Because if so, that is just amazing.
just think, 24 frames per second of animation, multiply that by how many minuets are in a feature-length movie (average 1.5 hours) comes out to 129600 individual frames, yes, i think your mind has just been blown ; )
a wonderful sequence! I love the rough look of it! richard williams is a brilliant animator, and his book, "the animator's survival kit" ought to be called the animators bible as well! It's packed full of wonderful, and useful, and humorous information! The drawings are wonderful, and it has walk cycles galore! it improves greatly on the classic preston blair animation book! I highly recommend it for animators, or people who love animation! It cost me about $40. It was well worth it!
Stop dissing computer animation. I know that traditional is important and I respect that medium very much but 3D is just another tool of the trade. Why are you people dissing it so much? IMHO it is not easy to create 3D animation. But seriously now. It's quite obvious that you people are limited on the kinds of animation that you watch. 3D is much more versatile than 2D. More practical too. Just respect people. These are just mediums. What it becomes is up to you.
I guess they're like me. line drawn animation just seems to flow better. CG animation tends to look stiff. I've seen all kinds of bad cg animation. mainly in commercials. it seems only quality CG animation shows up in pixar, or dreamworks features anymore.
I bought it from a friend. I live in Australia, and i think my friend bought it from this book shop called 'Borders'. not sure though. the book cost AUS$50, very good for animators.
Richard Williams is the greatest animator still alive today. He is my idol!!!! the best way of animation is the traditional old fashioned way. 4get about computers, they make everything look the same. This way you can see a unique style!!!!!!!!!etc...
You are a completely ignorant loser to shun an entire MEDIUM of animation. What's more depression is that your closed-minded comment is rated so high. Lots of idiots out there.
And um...hello... there are 2 CG characters IN THE LOGO.
lol, ok. who r the most famous names in animation history...frank thomas, ollie johnston, milt kahl, rod scribner, bob mckimson...and much more. and what did they use, pencil and paper. im not dissing computer animation, but everythin in cartoons now adays looks exactly the same, there's no unique look to the computer. whereas every person in the world has their own unique style of drawing. i didnt mean 2 offend u. wot style of animation r u in2 then?
You've made a very common mistake in blaming the medium for what the PEOPLE have done in it, or lack therof. Just because almost all the mainstream Hollywood studios rip off Pixar's signature look doesn't mean that computer animation is incapable of producing more original, personal styles.
Adversely, having a paper and pencil doesn't guarantee that you will magically produce anything worth crap. Those men had TALENT, and the tools they used had little to nothing to do with it.
milt kahl is most famous for his fine draughtmanship, which is all about drawing, i agree they did have extraudinary talent and a lot of that wasnt to do with the equipment used and more to do with the performance given. but i would like to see some computer animation that looks different from pixar, dreamworks and every other company, if u show me something i like then i will give in and stop being so stubborn, lol ;-D
I think I've had the book for close to a year by now-but I'm still not positive as to HOW to practice it. I don't have an animation lighttable...yet. Previously, I just mimicked his examples (and did learn stuff)-but still feel like I'm missing a lot.

Look dude, that you prefer japanese animation doesn't give you the right to scorn all the western animation geniuses. I too like Studio 4ºC, Miyazaki, etc. I'm not saying they suck. Quality is everywhere.
Hey retard, they use about 2 frames a second and repeat the same frames OVER AND OVER for anime, while western animators used to hand-animate 24 frames per second, and beautifully, with hand drawn backgrounds. If you can't appreciate the art and time that went into it, well, then you're a lost cause. I hope you don't breed.
@paperfeathers I just watched the episode you were talking about. The lip syncing was bad, the character design was generic, just like nearly all Japanese animations I've seen, and the animation was next to nonexistent except for one scene in the opening. Miyazaki is still the only japanese animator that has produced anything that was had nearly as much of an effect on me as classic Disney movies. I honestly can't believe that you tried to pass off that crap as better than this.
Thank you for the info. Even though i assumed it to be his work, had to make sure. I mean, it coulda been done by a team of 30 professional animators..or "one" Richard Williams :)
Well feature films are a little different just cuz they expect like 5-8 seconds a week or something right? I'm a Game animator. Studios though...depending on things, they could ask 1 second an hour just cuz you care more about functionality then animation (with polish pass later though)
in game animation is going downhill fast in this industry today. I've worked tv, video games, and film. Theres to many people qho think they can animate but have no clue what makes it good. it takes a lot of time studying why one animation is nicer then another. it's like learning a martial art your whole life. not just a couple tricks you learn quick in school.
