What a beautiful baritone voice, my very favourite sound. But I always prefer Sondheim, especially this one, with actors who can sing as opposed to the opera approach with vocal dexterity above all else. He wrote it for good actors with brilliant timing.

I love Sweeney's makeup... and I agree.. whats so funny about 'bum bum'ing and whistling?

It's funny because up until now you've heard score after score of Stephen Sondheim's catchy and all too clever lyrics. When Turpin starts bum-bumming, it sounds like he forgot his lines and is just ad-libbing. Then Sweeney chimes in with his whistling, and it sounds like he's just rolling with it to try to save the scene. *lol*

I think it's the juxtaposition between the mortal danger the Judge is in, and his complete relaxation.

I think they laugh because the audience knows that Sweney Tood wants to kill judge Turpin, while he is clueless to this fact and is in a good mood and all is humming or hwatever.
