  • I ♥ Winona Ryder! :)

  • not too bad. not one of scorseses best in my opinion but its worth watching once

  • I find it ironic that he thought he was smarter than the rest of his friends and family, however, they all ended up being aware the entire time of what was going on.

  • The point of the film was the dilemma of conformity-do we choose the pressures of society over what we really want? It wasn't made to glorify the time period.

  • That would be most good.... Most good.

  • This film is GENIUS

  • Now, for those of you who didn't see, I put down it was pathetic that Wino lost to Paquin at the Oscars in 1993. Now, I take it back. Though Wino or Rosei Perez deserved it waaaaaaaay more than Anna, Anna still gave a good performance. Didn't deserve the Oscar at all, but still a good performance. I still feel like a douche for ripping apart a 7 year old. God, I can be such an asshole.

  • Winona Ryder is incredible. She's gorgeous, beyond talented, sexy when even playing a high society lady and never disappoints (The Dilemma sucked, but it had two women I've had a crush on for many years (Noni and Jennifer Connelly), so whatever). Love her so much.

  • @thelupoistheman1 I'm sure she'd have been good in this movie if she'd have just kept her mouth shut. Every time she affects an accent it's deplorable.

  • @repn87 From the Age of Innocence to the Age of Ignorance

  • this is something so out of scorese's work but iits brilliant

  • a beautiful movie !

all 3 main characters are simply great !

    thx 4 the trailer !!!

  • My fav movie

  • i so wish i could have a time machine and go back into the victorian era

  • @NothingED People died from strep throat and cholera. It took a month to travel from New York to London. You had to take a dump in an outhouse. Women couldn't vote. The infant mortality rate hovered around 40 %. There wasn't any indoor heating or air conditioning. There were literal cloouds of dried horse and cattle feces in the sky above New York. It looks romantic because Holywood made it that way. In reality life was brutal and short.

  • @itlfa2009 I'm a history major so i know but People in this day and age die from AIDS and Cancer, you can travel quickly but if your plane crashes you're fucked. I don't like to talk about fecal matter so i wont even address that. I'm aware there was no climate controlled environments in those days but i could live with it since i don't have it in my house.I'm running out of room but i don't have a romanticized idea of what it was however I still wish i could experience the real Victorian era.

  • @NothingED :D Earth Science major here so I'll defer history to you. Agreed on fecal matter, but it is an important subject since it has played a rather large role in civilization throughout history. It, or the microbes within, have killed more people than all the wars combined with the possible exception of WWII. AIDS didn't exsist (as far as we know) but cancer most certainly did. I agree that traveling there, with the hope of returning to our modern age, would be a fascinating thing to do.

  • @itlfa2009 oh yesi wouldnt want to stay but the idea of being able to say, look at a movie or read a book based on real events and go to that time to actually see it and experience it to see how much was lost and how much of it is inaccurate and then come back with that knowledge.does that make any sense at all? hell time travel would be so significant in any field of study. all the things that are hypothesized about the past could be verified. but that would take all the fun out of research tho

  • @itlfa2009 I will say this though i wouldn't be too fond of wearing the corsets!!! lol

  • I want to watch it but Michelle Pfeiffer's voice is really annoying in this for some reason.

  • I'm using this novel for my master's thesis. Not only is this the only adaptation of Edith Wharton's work that I like, but it is probably one of the best adaptations of a novel I have seen. If you haven't read the novel and like this movie, you have to read it! The novel is even better!

  • @yellowrose32 Novels are always better than the movies but Edith really has a way in which her words are almost like poetry they string together so good .

  • cool i might buy it! is this a good movie? i'm into romance and stuff! lol

  • I have to read the book for my sophomore summer homework. I hope it's not boring.

  • I absolutely loved the book. I will definitely have to re-read it. I haven't watched the movie yet, but I plan to.

    -PhantomoftheRose

  • is michelle pffiefer meant to be a lot older than the man in this or is it just my mind imagining it?

  • @likeastarbaby

Its funny but I too think Pfieffer seems older than Day-Lewis in this film. In a way, it makes sense that she would seem older. Her character is more worldly and has been through a rough marriage. By the way, in real life, Day-Lewis is exactly one year older than Pfieffer (to the day, their birthday is on the same day.)

  • I recommend to you all to read the book, it's so deep and involving. You will miss it when ended.

  • @83clau83 i read this book several times. i love it. i wanted it to continue forever

  • good movie, but the ending is so sad (

  • "that would be most good Newland, most good"

  • In 1:11 is the best scene... I love it !

  • In 2:03 Daniel Day-Lewis MY GOD... Sighs...

  • Michel Pfeiffer deserved to win one oscar as best actricess !!! I love her ♥ ♥

  • Michel Pfeiffer deserved to win one oscar as best actricess !!!!!!!!!!! i love her ♥ ♥

  • At last, I found a trailer of this movie! I was watched it years ago, it was a great movie but I found myself craving for its trailer.

  • At last, I found a trailer of this movie! I was watched it years ago, it was a great movie but I found myself craving for its trailer.

  • May Welland serves the same purpose here as Tommy DeVito did in "Goodfellas" - like DeVito, she grows and thrives in 'the society' she finds herself - without inner conflict, and is seemingly unstoppable! Winona scared the crap out of me actually. Someone compared May's final claiming of Newland to Tommy performing one of his terrifying spontaneous executions....

  • Seems like Scorsese hit the mark again, looks a lot like the novel on film, as it should be.

  • @insertanyonesname,

Its Martin Scorsese. he's never made a bad film.

  • @thelupoistheman1 wow i never knew he directed this!! dont know allot of his work but i know these are not the type of films he does! impressive! :)

  • Uno dei miei film preferiti.

    Michelle favolosa!

  • nobody get mad at me.... but this reminds me of the gossip girl plotline.

  • well, your right, Theyre are actually setting up age of innocence as a schoolplay in gossip girl where everybody has the character who fits in on their life...

  • the author did admit taht she did somewhta based her novels on the age of innocence so it is understnadable ^_^

  • I love how in this one Winona Ryder's being cheated on by an older woman and in "The Crucible" Daniela Day Lewis was cheating on his wife with Winona Ryder.

  • fantastic book and movie ^_^ loved it

  • I hate the trailer voice

  • Wynona Ryder played the part of May perfectly. She struck the perfect chord. The perfect society young lady who it turns out is more resourceful than her husband realizes. She deserved the nominations she got!

  • @brboone71 she played may perfectly. she deserved the nomination and i think she should a won it :)

  • @brboone71,

But good ole Academy Wards fucked her over for a 7 year old(Anna Paquin). Pathetic!

  • wow. "what the hell does that mean sir?" I was SO not expecting that from Newland Archer.

  • @sunkissedmoonlite163 That line is in the book...

  • @brboone71-

I guess I just forgot he said that...it seems out of character to me...but of course Edith Wharton created his character, so she's got the final word. definitely gets your attention, though. :)

  • that's just stupid.. how can a man leave lovely winona for an old cat face woman lol

  • @WsAndInterPoLuV i know right? that's the only reason why i can't stand watching this movie..

  • Winona was indeed gorgeous in those dresses.

  • This was a really, really cheesy film. Do not ruin the book for yourself. Don't watch it before or after you read the excellent book (Written by Edith Wharton, an insider). The people who made this film had no clue what WASP New York High Society was about, and that's abundantly clear. Don't pollute your mind with this garbage.

  • i am doing my project on this book and i just gotta say that the movie is wayyyyyy better

  • your not supposed to watch the movie first...it ruins any book

  • does anybody know what the song in the beginning of the trailer is???

  • did you watch it?

  • no but i plan on it very soon to see what the fuss was about.

  • because it belongs there

There are three amazing actors in the leading roles

It's based upon a true classic in litterature

And if you can't enjoy that, then there is a third thing called taste, which may differ from person to person

  • I really should pick up this book!

  • scorseses films always do have brilliant photography on top of brilliant storytelling.

  • does any1 no anysongs tht could b related to this movie i have an english project and i have 2 pick songs tht relate to the book. if u no any plz rite back. thnx

  • m'ama non m´ama, i think from the opera faust and any song from the opera la sonnambula

  • ya...there both in the book

  • I saw this last week and I must say its was pretty fucking awesome.

  • Winona was most good in this movie. MOST good.

    * sorry, couldn't resist.

  • Im sorry but that was awful, can we have a topless scene or somethin?

  • Uh yeah.

  • Eww soo disgusting. Michelle as Ellen?! No way... her voice is horribly annoying. She looks way to old and hardly captivating. Winona Ryder who's always incredibly spirted is reduced to the role of May? That sucks. If she didn't look so young she would have made the perfect Ellen. But ugh M.P. as Ellen what a horrible choice.

  • I am thinking the same exact thing. I want so bad to see the film after reading the book, but Michelle Pfeiffer in no way brings to mind Ellen. I thought Ryder would make a better Ellen as well. I'm reluctant to watch this version because of the horrible casting decisions, but the only other one I would watch (from 1924) I cannot find a copy of.

  • I agree, particularly after Winona's portrayal of Susanna Kaysen. I know that came years later, but what a performance! The candidness, passion, and power in Susanna could have very easily been transferred to Ellen. Michelle Pfeiffer actually strikes me as more of a May type, both in performance and appearance.

  • Really nice movie with amazing Michelle Pfeiffer and Winona Ryder in it!

  • pfeiffer's voice annoys me but otherwise this looks good!

  • this looks good.

  • One of the most beautiful and remembered films in my world.

  • I thought of the Gossip Girl comment too, but I realized that it's not the generation that is dumb,, as much as it's changing. They just don't do these films much for the movie theatre's anymore. Now it would be more of a T. V. movie. If you can look back at the late 80's and early ninties alot of films took place in these times. Usually starring Winona Ryder and Michelle Pfeiffer! Dracula, Dangerious Liasions, Little Women. I think they thought you could get Oscars for this work then!

  • fair point...seems that nowadays no director ever bothers to film novels composed prior to the 20th century any more...or because most of them have already been done unsurpassably indeed during the late 80's and early 90's so that wilder subjects reign over the 21th century instead;-) not bad either in my humble opinion anyway

  • @TheLovelylove Whats Gossip Girl ?

  • @Zahra4President Its a TV show, its on the CW network.

  • @TheLovelylove and don't forget Helena Bonham Carter

  • @TheLovelylove having read the book (tortuously), I can say it isn't that present generation isn't capable of enjoying a story like this, it's just that the time when a story like this might have been appreciated has passed, and has passed for some time now. A story like this does not have a universal theme such as in Shakespeare, and so is inaccessible to the postmodern world.

  • @cameron120587 It has a very universal theme!! A man having to choose between the person he loves and the person his society thinks he should be with. That story will never get old...this is as universal as it can get...You can set this story in any culture, among any racial or religious group, even any sexual orientation...

  • Of course most movies can never outdo the books they are based on, but I must say that this movie does the book justice and is simply a visual feast. Kudos to the wardrobe people, set designers and most of all the cinematographer and director. Oh, the actors were also very good, this is probably Wynona's best performance to date. I love how she plays May; sooo very cunning under that honey veneer!!

  • Looks like a romantic movie.

  • And so it proves ;-)

  • i didn't see the film yet but i am gonna watch it soon i realy prefer this historical romance movies.

    xxx lola

  • I could not agree more to what "deanriam" says! all though lets keep in mind any person who watches Gossip Girl is either starting puberty thus not been around at the release of this movie. Or is simply of a certain intellectual caliber!

  • please be kind. Just because our generation doesn't sit around eating crumpets and critiqueing Shakespeare does not mean that we are complete morons. The fact is that a good many of the people who were old enough to appreciate this movie when it first came out probably spent their 20's smoking weed in the back of a hippie van. Every generation has its own flaws and strengths, and it is not fair to push everything on our's just because we have ipods and cell phones.

  • i totally agree with you.

    i am only thirteen.

and i do realy love the movies.

    xxx

    lola

  • I hate it when youngsters think they're "just so cool" for liking "old stuff." Like, I'm only 13! Lol.

  • AGREE :-) old or new, we're just enjoying what we really like and it's just silly to think oneself being superior due to 'aged' tastes...

  • hey i wasn't waiting for comments our something o yes people i am fourteen now does that make a difference!

i agreed with gregory who said i thought i was cool because i am only 13. you get the point stupid ashole.

    xx

    lola

  • Is that a stone in your hand?

  • The fact that over 10 people on this board discovered this movie through Gossip Girl, should be enough proof of how uncultured and stupid this generation is.

  • I thouroughly agree

  • The primary demographic for Gossip Girl is 18-24, but teens and tweens alike are huge fans. That means most watchers are in their teens. When you were in high school, how many people read classics or watched films that were sixteen years old? Excluding the handful of book lovers who most certainly do not represent your average teenager. Are you condemning those intrigued enough to learn more about something they formerly were unaware of? That certainly is a bad trait, isn't it?

  • I just graduated high school, my generation disgusts me and I completely stand by my statements. I'm not saying it's a bad trait, but The Age of Innocence is not some obscure movie and it's not over 50 years old for it to be shocking that someone below the age of 20 knows about it. Sorry, but anyone who discovers high profile classics through Gossip Girl ought to be ashamed, I bet most of them didn't know what Breakfast at Tiffany's was until Blair had a nightmare about it too, right? Pathetic!

  • @deanriam in some way I agree with you but in some ways i dont since although our culture is what it is we should thank references like those like Gossip Girl that reminds the younger generation that it was classics like the age of innocence is what brought that hit show together and in some way from one popular hit many people can discover other classics, now I discovered age of innocence by stumbling an old worn paperback version of it on the "free to take me" table in my high school library

  • @deanriam Umm...snobbery is quite unbecoming!! You sound rather ridiculous...looking your nose down at others simply because they don't share your cultural tastes?? How very sad!!

  • @plutogirllovekj Fuck you. I don't care if people don't share my taste, I was just pissed people were spamming this trailer with crap just because they didn't know the film before a stupid show like Gossip Girl made a reference to it, that was well over a year ago anyway.

And if you think that's sad, then you really need to look at other things happening in the world. Because you don't know the first thing about me.

  • @deanriam How very quaint, you truly are the epitome of class and virtue...adieu.

  • @plutogirllovekj "Adieu"? Well, one thing's for sure, if I'm a snob, then you are a pretentious bitch. ;)

Next time be smart enough to not make a big deal over comments that are over a year old.

  • @deanriam "anyone who discovers high profile classics through Gossip Girl ought to be ashamed". Why should they be a ashamed? Yeah GG is trash but If they want to watch it and read Classics whats the harm? You sound a bit narrow minded.

  • @deanriam haha too right!!

i love it when someone mentions a period film and i'm all like where have you been! are the only movie you watch about street dance and ditsy cheerleaders?! dont get me wrong i love step up and mean girls as much as the next person but films like this offer you so much more than "hes cute lets get it on"! lol

i choose costume dramas over chick flicks any day! :)

and i am also very proud to say i knew about them from the age of around 14! thanx mum! :)

  • @deanriam I think it's great that you're enthusiastic but, honestly, in 15 years high school students will be saying the same thing about their generation. I was 14 when this came out and, let me tell you, barely anyone I knew my age had heard of films like Bladerunner or Amadeus at that time. It's not a generation but a class and age thing. :)

  • Great movie with amazing acting - Winona Ryder, Michelle Pfeiffer, Daniel Day Lewis

  • i loved this film. i love daniel day lewis, the sexiest man in history!!

  • gg mad eme look it up....well..look it up again...xDDD

  • me 2

    watched gg just now

  • Oh, what is this music? It's lovely. Just placed this on hold at the library, the book, not the movie. I can't wait. I feel kind of silly because Gossip Girl made me want to look this up : )

  • hihi, same here

  • You're not alone - I just finished watching that particular episode of GG, and am now about to watch the movie, and read the book as soon as I can.

  • haha yes GG made me pop the DVD in and watch it again. This film is beautiful and heart-wrenching like no other film. The book made me my eyes cry dry.

  • haha me 2

  • omg lol same here!

  • I feared I was the only one. Apparently I'm not :-)

  • yeap, me too. But i don't understand what characters where they playing,. I figured it out that Serena played May...

  • Serena was May

    Dan was Newland

Blair was I believe the name is Ellen, the main girl.

IHNI who Nate was lolz :)

  • its called reading you might want to try it sometime. i personally love Edith Wharton and started to get into her books after reading Ethan Frome my sophomore year. i am now 17 and this is my 3rd favorite book after Frome and 1984.

  • BTW All of these actors are extremely superior to those so called"actors" on the plotless gossip girl. they truly brought this story alive and expressed the emotions that the characters were feeling. the fact that gossip girl even tried to pull this off was laughable and sad.

  • Someone is getting angry over nothing. Yes I watch Gossip Girl as a frivolous distraction. It's one hour of TV a week. I'm an avid reader, constantly. And mostly classics, Shakespeare, Austen, Dickens etc. The gossip girl episode used this because it strongly reflected what was happening in the plot. I find it clever, and as you can see from comments alone it's inspiring some to read this lovely book. I've just begun it and it's already captivated me. So I think I've explained myself.

  • Amazingly elegant movie

  • i LOVE winona ryder, watch the film Mermaids she stars in with cher, its a short film but shes excellent in it

  • excellent movie.

  • i drink your milkshake

  • michelle is brilliant!

  • Daniel Michael Blake Day-Lewis never ceases to amaze me. =)<3

  • Ignoring rules is the best way to enjoy life. But with no rules, there would be no pleasure to break them..

  • Ultimate chick scene haha when Michelle Pfeiffer is sitting on the bench looking out and see Noland....Beautiful Gloom and Doom Renaissance Style (Recommended for Emo Kids ages 8 and up haha)

  • all hail the great daniel day-lewis

  • Winona Ryder should have won the Oscar for this. Hands down. She was the best that year, and deserved to win.

  • people usually think she shouldnt have, but i disagree. I dont think people that did not read the book understood that that was how may really acted. plus you can see in her eyes in certain scenes what May is thinking underneath....that May is not as innocent as you once thought.

  • This is sick! Was he to look like a pansy?

  • Certainly not one of Scorsese's best films, imo - lots of melodrama but it lacks a certain something. It's still worth a watch though, just to see Winona looking probably her most beautiful. She is simply jaw dropping.

Daniel Day Lewis had already proved himself as an excellent actor in the Last of the Mohicans, but he further confirms his a-list status in this film too.

  • I think it was Scorsese's best film because the book is my favorite book of all time.

    Love it so MUCH!

  • The love story told magnificently by this film touched me very deeply. Why doesn't Hollywood produce more movies as sophisticated as Age of Innocence?

  • Hollywood produce loads of films every year though only a few of them are considered classics, and in my opinion ppl don't really appreciate those classic novel stuff these days and the directors wanna have a go at something creative..

  • Because quality and mass appeal are oxymorons and it is "ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMINS BABY!"

  • They do, but they only see limited releases, and then only in a few major cities like New York and Los Angeles, so they are hard to find, but definitely worth if you have the opportunity to see them. Then again, are independent films considered "Hollywood"?

  • Well, you are right in a way. Companies such as Miraxmax, Sony Classic, and Fox Searchlight still produce sophisticated fare. However, what I lament is that major studios no longer make high-brow films for a mass audience. These movies are normally made for the very small arthouse market. But during the nineties, a film such as Age of Innocence still enjoyed a wide and general release in the nineties.

  • love Winona Ryder!!!!

  • o my god this movie was so boring, only illustrating that the upper class only had to fear other upper class, and thier "polite" distain from those that do not follow their own social customs....do yourself a favor, only watch this movie if u have to...

  • I just finished the book for English class- so touching :< I can't wait to see the movie :D

  • bleah. i read this book when i was 13. can't fathom why.i only know i finished it and was rather puzzled at the end. i get it now, but at 13, it didn't quite make sense.

  • I think this is Martin Scorsese's most beautiful film.

  • Im reading this book now! mmmm Im slitly unnearved by it pore May!

  • One of the best movies EVER. Michelle Pfeiffer is so much more than a pretty face and Daniel Day Lewis is simply outstanding. Scorcese should have won for this. This is a true testimony to his talent. Quiet, subtle, lush, beautiful.

  • Hey, Michelle Pfeiffer is freaking beautiful for her age!

  • lol i remember wen they made fun of this movie in family guy LOL

  • ME TOO! haha.

  • Personally, this is the best movie i've ever seen. Very classy, excellent actors and great story, but above all, the best soundtrack

  • omfg i fucking LOVE Daniel Day Lewis he's such a Amazing actor!!! he's hot

  • this is one of the best movies ever! i loved it

  • my favourite Scorsese film.

  • that voice Day-Lewis is doing is superb. I think it signifies the his character: the timidness of him

  • isn't it strange how in the book May is the blonde and Ellen Olenska is the brunette...yet in the movie May is brunette and Ellen is the blonde?

  • lol..dunno exactly,cuz I haven't read the novel :-)

as far as I know Winona was born a blonde but she dyed her hair black(or dark brown)

  • i cant imagine her blond

  • lol you can:-) just have a look at the Tim Burton film Edward Scissorshand there she was blonde

  • I believe Winona Ryder never looked more beautiful than in this movie. And what a great work by the german Director of Photography Michael Ballhaus. Definitely one of the most underrated films from Martin Scorsese

  • for some reason I always get this movie & Dangerous Liaisons confused ;D dunno why lol

I wanna see this movie though, because it's a Michelle P movie ;)
